'He would chase a paper bag' - Newcastle's most underrated players

BBC News2 days ago
Former Newcastle defender John Anderson has selected his top-five most underrated Magpies players over the past 25 years. At fifth, he selected defender Andy Griffin, who made over 100 appearances between 1999 and 2004.On a BBC Radio Newcastle special, Anderson said: "He was always solid and a little bit of an old-fashioned [player]. He loved a tackle and didn't mind putting himself about. I don't think he is as appreciated as he should have been."Next on Anderson's list, in fourth place, is Kevin Gallacher. The winger featured 47 times for Newcastle between 1999 and 2001:"He had a great work ethic - he would chase a paper bag and chase lost causes. I don't think he got the appreciation he should have done."He was a very good player because he came in, did a job and got on with it. I don't really recall him having a poor game. He was a steady Eddie."Come back to this page throughout Friday to see the rest of Anderson's picks.Listen to the top-five special on underrated playersAccess top-five shows on managers, centre-backs and hardmen here

Germany's Kathrin Hendrich sent off for pulling French player's ponytail

Germany defender Kathrin Hendrich was sent off for pulling the ponytail of France captain Griedge Mbock in a bizarre moment in the Euro 2025 quarter-final. The incident also resulted in a penalty as it took place in the box, and it left Germany a goal and a player down after just 15 minutes as Grace Geyoro successfully converted from the spot. In what was a nightmare start for Germany, Swedish referee Tess Olofsson was sent to the pitchside monitor when the VAR spotted an incident in the penalty box as Germany defended a France free-kick. Replays showed that Germany defender Hendrich pulled the ponytail of France's Mbock as she attempted to get onto the end of the cross from the left side and referee Olofsson awarded a penalty and showed Hendrich a straight red card after the review. Hendrich appealed the referee's decision and had to be persuaded to leave the pitch by her team-mates. It also resulted in a further reshuffle in the Germany defence, with the eight-time champions already without captain Giulia Gwinn and back-up right back Carlotta Wamser. "What are you doing!?" 😐 A moment of madness as Germany's Kathrin Hendrich is sent off for a hair pull and gives away a penalty — ITV Football (@itvfootball) July 19, 2025 The record eight-time European champions Germany have never lost to France at a major tournament, in five attempts, and defeated Les Bleues in the Euro 2022 semi-finals three years ago. But France have won their last 11 games in a row and were impressive in the group stages with victories over England, the Netherlands and Wales. They also beat Germany in last year's Nations League semi-finals. France have a real opportunity to win a major tournament for the first time and defeating Germany, who looked shaky during the group stage and lost 4-1 to Sweden to finish runners-up, will be a major test of their credentials.

MacIntyre needs 'hot start' to save Open chances

It's probably a measure of how far Bob MacIntyre has come that he goes into the final day of an Open Championship inside the top 10 but feeling Scot started his third round at Royal Portrush five off pacesetter Scottie Scheffler, but finished it eight back from the peerless leader after a world number 14 is not out of contention at six under, but it's hard to say he's in it either. "Unless I get off to a hot, hot start, it's probably out the window," MacIntyre conceded."If I see myself close to the lead and within a few shots, then we'll throw everything at it. But seeing the leaderboard, it's probably just jostling for position."MacIntyre had vowed to not be scared of the prospect of getting in amongst it after his second-round 66. But a late burst of low scoring late on Friday left him "almost in tears" on his coach and nudged him further away from the summit by the time he started on Saturday. And as the sun shone, the 28-year-old found himself unable to take advantage of the more forgiving conditions in the way others his scorecard showed the same spray of red as most of the field, but three ill-timed bogeys interupted any murmurings of opening pars, then a dropped shot on four, caused him to slip down the order, but then his fortunes on six immediately repaired the damage, before a close-range eagle on the par five seventh hoisted MacIntyre right back into the that the spark? No. Bogey on eight stymied 15-footer for birdie on 11 - his longest of the week - turned out to be his last flicker. A flicker extinguished on his approach from the middle of the fairway found a greenside bunker, his club went cartwheeling after it amid a cloud of elite swearing. "I think it's fair game to lose the plot every now and again," MacIntyre said, when pressed on it afterwards. "A bit of anger came out."Three shots later, he scribbed down another bogey. Baw burst. Four closing pars were purely perfunctory."The tougher the test, the more I feel I can keep that discipline," he added. "The more there's a birdie fest and a shootout, that's when I lose it properly."I thought walking away from here last night that I wouldn't be more than three shots back, but ended up five shots back from the best player in the world."Now tomorrow is about going out there and finishing as high as we can."
