Police Scotland sends report to prosecutors after Glasgow councillor charged with fraud
Police have sent a report to prosecutors after a former Labour leader of Glasgow City Council was charged with fraud offences.
Frank McAveety is a former Labour MSP and Cabinet Minister who also led the council on two occasions.
A spokesperson for Police Scotland said in April: 'A 62-year-old man has been arrested and charged in connection with fraud offences in the Glasgow area between 2022 and 2024.
'A report will be submitted to the procurator fiscal in due course.'
The force has now told the Record a report has been submitted to the Procurator Fiscal.
McAveety represents the Shettleston ward and is currently listed as an independent.
He was leader of Glasgow council between 1997 and 1999, and between 2015 and 2017.

I push Keir Starmer to be more extroverted in Scotland
Mr Sarwar said he speaks to the Prime Minister every two or three weeks, often calling at weekends when they both have more free time. The Scottish Labour leader also said he will not engage in any 'back room stitch-ups' with other parties if he becomes first minister following the Scottish election next year. At an Edinburgh Fringe event in front of a live audience, Mr Sarwar was interviewed by Catherine Salmond, editor of The Herald. He was pressed on his relationship with the UK Labour leader and whether Sir Keir was comfortable coming north of the border. He said: 'We're different personalities… I am much more probably conversational, out there, a bit of an extrovert. 'I think it's safe to say he's a bit more introverted in that sense.' Mr Sarwar said Sir Keir had become more relaxed and confident in the five years since becoming Labour leader. He said Sir Keir was more relaxed in Scotland than in other parts of the UK, adding: 'I think we've built up a rapport, probably because I am pushing to be a bit more of extroverted than perhaps he is in other parts.' He said he spoke to the Prime Minister around 'two or three times a month'. However he said the early part of Labour's response to the war in Gaza had been 'challenging' for his party, referring to an interview the Prime Minister gave where he said Israel had the 'right' to withhold power and water from Gaza in response to the October 7 attacks. 'I think the early part was challenging, he himself accepts that what he said in the LBC interview wasn't right,' Mr Sarwar said. Discussing the Middle East further, he said: 'I think we have to be doing much more to hold the Israeli government to account. 'To provide evidence that there is not any components that are being used in a proactive way in Gaza.' Looking ahead to the 2026 Scottish election, Mr Sarwar said he was putting his 'heart, soul energy, time' into winning. He said it would be a 'very close election' likely to result in a 'parliament of minorities'. Rather than doing deals such as the SNP-Green powersharing agreement, he said he would 'work progressively with the parliament' if he became first minister. He said: 'We are looking to form a minority Scottish Labour government that does no kind of back room stich-up but instead moves to govern based on what we promised.'

US Army sergeant shot five soldiers at Georgia's Fort Stewart, official says
Few details were immediately available about what led to the gunfire, but the suspect is an army sergeant, according to a US official. The official was not authorised to publicly discuss details of the investigation and spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity. The army said it is investigating. The injured were treated and then moved to Winn Army Community Hospital, base officials said in a Facebook post, adding there was no threat to the community. Law enforcement was sent to the 2nd Armoured Brigade Combat Team complex shortly before 11am local time on Wednesday. The gunman was arrested at 11.35am, officials said. Fort Stewart was locked down for around one hour on Wednesday (Russ Bynum/AP) The lockdown lasted about an hour, and three schools just outside the base took steps similar to a lockdown as well, 'out of an abundance of caution', the Liberty County School System said. The lockdown lasted about an hour. After it was lifted, cars began to move through the normal security checkpoint at the fort's main gate. The army's 2nd Armoured Brigade Combat Team was created in 2016 when the service added more than 200 vehicles to an infantry unit of roughly 4,200 soldiers. Also known as the Spartan Brigade, the army has called the unit its 'most modern land fighting force'. Located about 40 miles south west of Savannah, Fort Stewart is the largest army post east of the Mississippi River. It is home to thousands of soldiers assigned to the army's 3rd Infantry Division and family members. The fort's three elementary schools were also locked down, community superintendent Brian Perry told WTOC-TV. The schools have nearly 1,400 students, according to the Department of Defence. White House and Defence Department officials said President Donald Trump and Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth had been briefed on the shooting. The FBI was at the fort to help investigate, said deputy director Dan Bongino.
