Unhoused teens become playwrights through Straz partnership
"Unfortunately, I lost my car," one teen begins. "Fortunately, I had wings," another offers. "Unfortunately, I flew too close to the Sun," a third chimes in.
Laughter spreads. The warmup ends. The teens sink into gray couches and open their scripts for today's rehearsal: a comedy they wrote about a gold-digging leprechaun.
Why it matters: The youngest in the room is 13; the oldest, 18. All of them are experiencing homelessness and live at Metropolitan Ministries with their parents.
But through a partnership between Metropolitan Ministries and the Straz, for 90 minutes each week, they're not case numbers — they're actors and playwrights.
What they're saying: Justine Burke, vice president of marketing for Metropolitan Ministries, noted that many kids the nonprofit serves have never experienced Broadway-style theater.
"It brings them a lot of laughter, a lot of joy. It relieves their stress and exposes them to things that they might otherwise not be able to do."
Zoom in: Lekovic grew up in Tampa and is a product of the Straz's community engagement program. Her mom dropped her off in the summers while she worked.
That's where she first learned that not all plays were written by "dead white guys." They could be made in a room with kids like her. And that stuck with her.
She studied musical theater, started a theater company in New York, worked on stages in Chicago and wrote screenplays in Los Angeles. But her roots were in Tampa, and she returned in 2022.
State of play: The teens have written two plays since January. One is a dark reimagining of "Little Red Riding Hood." The other started as a joke on St. Patrick's Day.
Some of the teens miss classes, but they always come back. Over time, the talkative ones quiet down; the quiet ones speak up. Lekovic has watched them grow into an ensemble.
She hopes a few keep writing. Maybe a few keep acting. But mostly, Lekovic hopes they remember what it felt like to build something together.
What's next: Tonight, the teens have a stage reading. Not all of them will be there — some have jobs, some have SAT prep. Life.

For a Beijing duck feast that heals the soul: Ji Rong Peking Duck in Rosemead Since we haven't met yet, hi, I'm Kat Thompson, and I'm joining the Eater Southern California/Southwest team as an audience editor, a role I'm excited to tackle to highlight all the incredible restaurants in our vast region. Still, change can be hard, and when life feels in flux I often gravitate toward something familiar to ground me. The perfect grounding meal, in most cases, is Ji Rong's roast Beijing duck, a dish that has yet to disappoint me across dozens of visits. The duck is consistently great with lacquered crispy skin, accompanied by paper-thin crepes painted with sweet and savory hoisin sauce, fresh sliced cucumbers, and ribbons of green onion. Rebecca Roland Ever since reading Los Angeles Times critic Bill Addison's review of Burbank's Armenian restaurant Tun Lahmajo, I've looked for an excuse to find myself in the neighborhood that wasn't a trip to Ikea, since that always ends with Swedish meatballs. Recent plans (that didn't quite work out) finally brought me to Burbank and I jumped at the chance to make a detour. Even mid-week, Tun Lahmajo was bustling; in the dining room, a group combined a handful of tables into something that could accommodate at least 12, while there wasn't a single open seat on the patio. At the front of the restaurant, a fire licked the edges of a towering stone oven as plates of loosely wrapped dolmas emerged from the back kitchen. But I remained focused on the lahmajune (also spelled lahmajoon) topped with spiced ground meat, tomato sauce, and melted cheese. The lahmajune here is thinner and softer than at other shops like the Lahmajune Factory, more akin to the texture of a roti or flaky tortilla. The rest of the food arrived within minutes: shawarma cradled in a flatbread with sliced tomatoes, a still-steaming bowl of lentil soup, and meat and rice dolmas with a yogurt sauce. The service was casual and warm, an extension of the feeling that Tun Lahmajo is the staff's own expansive kitchen, where they welcome friends in. 2202 N. Jakob N. Layman Weekend mornings are my time to shine. After I wake up and walk the dog, exploring Los Angeles during the early hours is pure joy, especially before the afternoon madness. But to traverse this vast city of ours and take in the sights and sounds, one needs sustenance — cue New York's Chopped Cheese. The Hollywood outlet is open until 2 a.m. (3 a.m. on weekends), while the Mid-City location operates from 10 a.m. to midnight. The restaurant comes from a group of former New Yorkers (including one from Linden Hollywood) who wanted to bring New York City's favorite corner bodega sandwich imports to Los Angeles: a chopped cheese and bacon, egg, and cheese. I admit to side-eyeing the prospect of another New York City import, but New York's Chopped Cheese got me with that classic and incredible chopped cheese. As Trump Tightens Hold on Kennedy Center, Top Theater Producer Resigns
The top official overseeing theater at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts is stepping down, throwing into question the stability of one of the venue's most important sources of box office revenue as President Trump seeks to transform the institution. Jeffrey Finn, whose current titles are senior vice president of artistic programming as well as vice president and executive producer of theater, plays an outsize role at the Kennedy Center. For nearly a decade he has programmed its touring Broadway shows and locally produced musicals, which have often sold strongly. While theater has been a financial driver for the Kennedy Center, the future health of the theater program has been called into question as some Broadway producers and performers have said they were uncomfortable working there as Mr. Trump seeks to put his ideological stamp on it. During Mr. Finn's tenure he booked two successful runs of the musical 'Hamilton' there, but the show's producers canceled a planned third run because of Mr. Trump's actions. Mr. Finn declined to comment, and Kennedy Center officials did not respond to requests for comment. Mr. Finn's resignation was confirmed by two people with knowledge of the move who asked not to be identified because they had not been authorized to speak about the matter by the Kennedy Center. His resignation comes at a time of change for the Kennedy Center. Mr. Trump, early in his second term, purged board members appointed by former President Joseph R. Biden Jr. from the previously bipartisan board and had himself appointed board chairman. Last month, Republican lawmakers suggested renaming the Kennedy Center's Opera House after the first lady, Melania Trump. And just this week Mr. Trump announced a plan to host the next Kennedy Center Honors ceremony, celebrating artists approved by him. There have been signs of a shift at the Kennedy Center, where officials have asked the venue's theater division to begin programing some Broadway titles with nonunion actors, a move that comes as the Trump administration also has taken a number of steps to limit the reach of federal employee unions. The next Kennedy Center theater season will include tours of 'Chicago' and 'Mrs. Doubtfire,' whose workers are not members of Actors' Equity Association, a labor union representing actors and stage managers. Mr. Finn, a longtime Broadway producer, has been at the Kennedy Center since 2016, and brought a number of popular touring shows there including 'Les Misérables,' which drew Mr. Trump to a recent performance. Mr. Finn also created the Broadway Center Stage program, producing three short-run musicals each season. The first Broadway Center Stage production, in 2018, was a rewritten version of the musical 'Chess' that is the basis for a production scheduled to open on Broadway this fall. The program also developed a revival of 'Spamalot' that transferred to Broadway and is now scheduled to begin touring later this year, a revival of 'The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee' that is leading to an Off Broadway production this fall, and a musical adaptation of the Apple TV+ series 'Schmigadoon!' that is hoping to transfer to Broadway. Mr. Finn has producing credits on 22 Broadway shows over the last two decades. His future plans are unknown.
