Calls for investigation into bribery after Stephen Colbert cancellation

A powerful Hollywood group has called for a sweeping investigation into Paramount Global following the abrupt cancellation of The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. The Writers Guild of America wants New York Attorney General Letitia James to launch a probe into whether the cancellation is related to Colbert's criticism of the network's capitulation to President Trump. In a fiery joint statement from the East and West Coast arms of the Writers Guild, the union suggests the scrapping of the show may amount to political bribery. The guild alleges Paramount's decision to axe the show after Colbert accused the company of bribing Donald Trump to advance its proposed $8.4 billion merger with Skydance Media was not merely coincidence, but potentially 'a dangerous capitulation to political pressure.' 'Cancelations are part of the business,' the WGA said, 'but a corporation terminating a show in bad faith due to explicit or implicit political pressure is dangerous and unacceptable in a democratic society.' The union's statement referenced the $16 million settlement Paramount reached earlier this month with Trump over a contentious 60 Minutes segment involving Kamala Harris during the 2024 election. The agreement was widely derided by media watchdogs as a dubious payoff and has already prompted an ongoing investigation by the California State Senate. Massachusetts Senator Elizabeth Warren has also demanded a federal probe into whether the settlement constituted an illegal attempt to curry favor with the White House. The cancellation came just two days after Colbert slammed the settlement live on air, calling it 'a big fat bribe' and openly questioning whether the payment was made to grease the wheels for the merger's approval. WGA leaders argue that segment may have cost Colbert his job. 'Given Paramount's recent capitulation to President Trump,' the union wrote, 'we have significant concerns that The Late Show's cancelation is a bribe, sacrificing free speech to curry favor with the Trump Administration.' The guild called on 'elected leaders to hold those responsible to account' and vowed to pursue every possible legal and political remedy to support its members and protect media freedom. Paramount executives deny any political motive. In a joint statement, co-CEO George Cheeks, CBS Entertainment president Amy Reisenbach, and CBS Studios president David Stapf insisted the decision was based purely on declining revenues and shifting industry dynamics. 'This was a financial decision against a challenging backdrop in late night,' they said. 'It is not related in any way to the show's performance, content or other matters happening at Paramount.' But critics aren't buying it. Trump wasted no time celebrating the move on his Truth Social account, gleefully writing, 'I absolutely love that Colbert got fired. His talent was even less than his ratings. I hear Jimmy Kimmel is next. Greg Gutfeld is better than all of them combined, including the Moron on NBC who ruined the once-great.'

Love Island's Lauren Wood hits out at critics of relationship with Harrison

The star spilled the goss on her relationship with Harrison, who left the villa to be with her. Love Island's Lauren Wood has taken part in her first interview since her dramatic exit from the villa which ended in the star convincing Harrison to leave the series. The 26-year-old dog walker bid farewell to the villa on Friday July 18 after an unexpected turn of events saw her partner Ty Isherwood snatched away by newcomer Angel Swift. ‌ Despite enduring a chaotic relationship with 22-year-old footballer Harrison, Lauren attempted to rekindle their romance as she prepared to leave, urging him to exit the show with her. Following a good long think, Harrison decided to follow Lauren out of the villa after a 10-minute speech that took up a sizeable chunk of the episode. ‌ Lauren has since spoken out about their relationship, expressing that she is "100 per cent" willing to give their love another chance, despite Harrison's past indiscretions, reports OK! ‌ "I see myself being with him long-term as I haven't had a connection like that with someone in such a long time," she revealed. "I know what we had was real despite what everyone else thinks. He has done wrong and made stupid mistakes, but he knows that and believes it was the wrong thing to do." Lauren also mentioned that before her departure, Harrison took the time to sit with her and Toni to openly discuss his feelings. ‌ "Harrison sat down with both me and Toni and told her that he missed me and wasn't moving forward with her because he had me on his mind. When I found out that I'd been dumped, we did briefly speak about him leaving with me and I asked him to," she revealed. "I realise that we'd had a bad few days together since the recoupling when he coupled back up with Toni, so it was a big decision for him to make. It didn't really give him enough time so he said he'd sleep on it. I told him 'If you mean what you're telling me, you'll act on it.'" ‌ Harrison also clarified his emotions regarding Lauren following his surprising and drawn-out departure from the villa. Regardless of residing in Miami, the reality star expressed his dedication to maintaining a long-distance romance with Lauren after walking from the show. "We'll make the distance work! It will be no issue. We left on good terms but the two days prior to leaving we weren't talking properly so it would be good to have a conversation, get everything out in the open and hopefully move forward from there," he explained. "I feel very strongly about the girl, I wouldn't have left if I didn't. I have no doubt in my mind that she'll be my girlfriend one day. I'm buzzing to see her and reunite! She's such a great girl."

Hosted by Maya Jama, it will air at 10pm - after the main show concludes. Harrison, 22, previously surprised fans by failing to follow Lauren, 26, on Instagram. Although the pair slept together during their time on the show, Harrison is not yet following Lauren, despite her already following him. While the footballer returned to the UK recently and is believed to have his phone back, he may not have full control of his social media accounts yet. The unexpected 'snub' has led to speculation about the status of their relationship after the show. Harrison previously insisted he does not regret having sex in the villa – but hopes his parents weren't watching. The sportsman decided to leave the show on Thursday after being involved in a dramatic love triangle with Lauren Wood and Toni Laites. Viewers were shocked when he was seen making a plea to re-couple with Las Vegas cabana server Toni, despite bedding Lauren the night before. But Harrison, from Burton upon Trent but now based in Miami, said he has no regrets about taking things to the next level on TV. 'What is that-' ask baffled fans after Love Island's Lauren confronts Harrison over love triangle with Toni Asked how he felt about his mum and dad knowing what he had done, he said: 'I hope they didn't see. But listen, it was a natural thing. 'I don't think I intended to have sex in the villa, but in there all the Islanders could tell we were so attracted to each other. Naturally, it was going to happen. 'The spark between us was crazy. I probably wasn't thinking about my parents and them watching it, but it naturally happened and I don't regret it.' Lauren, who works as a dog walker in York, was booted from the villa on Wednesday night. She begged Harrison to follow and, 24 hours later, he made the choice to go. Tonight, fans of the series will see the pair reunite on the spin-off show, Aftersun. Speaking about Lauren, Harrison said: 'We will make the distance work. It will be no issue. 'We left on good terms, but the two days prior to leaving, we weren't talking properly. 'So it would be good to have a conversation, get everything out in the open and hopefully we move forward from there. 'I feel very strongly about the girl. 'I wouldn't have left if I didn't. 'I have no doubt in my mind that she'll be my girlfriend one day. I'm buzzing to see her and reunite. She's such a great girl.' Meanwhile, Harrison said he would be 'mortified' if someone treated his sister the way he acted towards Toni. He revealed: 'I'd like to think we could be friends. I did her wrong a few times in there, so I understand if she doesn't want to reciprocate that. 'The conversation prior to me leaving was a big moment for me and her. I reflected on my whole situation throughout the day, I just let it out. 'You could tell by me getting emotional, I was upset about how I've acted and upset about Toni being upset as well. 'Similarly, if someone treated my sister like I'd treated Toni in there, obviously I'd be mortified. 'I wanted to apologise to her and I think she could see I was being genuine. 'I'm happy with how things were left.' Aside from Toni and Lauren, Harrison also explored connections with air hostess Helena Ford and Shakira Khan in the villa. Harrison said: 'Normally, I say I live life with no regrets. 'But the way I went about certain situations, I definitely would have handled it differently on reflection. 'Should have been more honest' 'I feel like I would've taken myself away from the situation for a day or two and just really figured out what I wanted. 'I would've had those awkward conversations just to let people know where my head was at. I do shy away from those conversations on the outside. 'Especially here, I should have been more honest. 'It was for the greater good, and it would have stopped people's feelings from getting hurt. 'People were hurt more by me being so indecisive and trying to avoid awkward conversations. 'I definitely would have gone about handling triangles in another way.' 5 They left the villa together in Thursday's episode Credit: Shutterstock Editorial 5 The pair slept together during their time on the show Credit: ITV
