INDIA bloc decides to contest the Vice-Presidential polls
This was the first physical meeting of the INDIA bloc partners after a gap of 14 months. The last meeting was on June 1, 2024. The Election Commission notified the election on Thursday. Nominations have to be filed by August 21.
The INDIA bloc leaders will address a joint rally in Bihar on the issue of the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in the State. The Opposition had claimed that the SIR was an attempt to weed out many eligible voters.
The meeting began with a 30-minute presentation by Mr. Gandhi, which he had shared earlier in the day at a press conference. Rashtriya Janata Dal leader Tejashwi Yadav briefed the leaders on how the SIR was unfolding in the State, pointing out the various discrepancies in the draft electoral roll published on August 1. During the course of his intervention, he informed the gathering that from August 10, the INDIA bloc will hit the streets in Bihar on the issue. This campaign is likely to conclude on September 1 with a public meeting, to which Mr. Yadav invited all INDIA bloc leaders.
Former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister and National Conference leader Farooq Abdullah was the only other leader to speak during the presentation. He urged the Opposition to keep the pressure on the government to restore Statehood for J&K. Mr. Abdullah explained how J&K was not represented in the Rajya Sabha and how vacant seats in State Assembly were yet to be filled. He also urged the Opposition to protest Lt.-Governor Manoj Sinha's orders to ban books.
After the presentation and dinner, a select group of leaders held a closed-door meeting on the Vice-Presidential election. This meeting was attended by the Congress's Parliamentary Party Chairperson Sonia Gandhi, party president Mallikarjun Kharge, Mr. Rahul Gandhi, Congress general secretary (organisation) K.C. Venugopal, Trinamool Congress leaders Abhishek Banerjee and Derek O' Brien, Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav, the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam's Lok Sabha leader K. Kanimozhi, former Maharashtra Chief Minister Udhav Thackeray, Nationalist Congress Party (SP) leader Supriya Sule, and others.
At least one person familiar with the discussion at this meeting said that the Opposition must decide their candidate after waiting to see who the BJP picks. 'Since our fight against this government is centred around the campaign to save the Constitution, which has been under assault, our candidate should be someone, whether politician or academic, who embodies this ideological contest,' one of the leaders said.

Chalo Delhi Ends…INDIA bloc allies throw weight behind T Cong's BC quota fight
Hyderabad: The Telangana Congress's 'Mahadharna' received major backing from parties of the INDIA bloc, who vowed to support the campaign. While some recalled the Periyar movement, others drew parallels between Chief Minister Revanth Reddy and former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi, whose role in achieving 69% reservation in the southern state remains significant. The demonstration held at Jantar Mantar on Wednesday saw INDIA bloc allies NCP, DMK, RJD, Shiv Sena (UBT), and the Samajwadi Party showing solidarity in support of Telangana's fight to secure 42% BC reservation. NCP leader SupriyaSule described Revanth Reddy as the most successful Chief Minister of Telangana. Reassuring support from INDIA alliance partners, she affirmed that the Telangana CM would receive all the support from the alliance. She recalled how Revanth Reddy, who remained optimistic about Congress coming to power in Telangana, had never aspired to become CM but donned the mantle with his positive approach. 'Similar to Karunanidhi's role in achieving reservation being etched in golden words, Revanth Reddy, who represents the new generation of leaders, is second only to him. His endeavour for bringing social justice will also be etched in gold words,' she said. Challenging the cap on reservation, Karunanidhi's daughter and DMK leader Kanimozhi wondered, 'How can there be a cap on justice?' The Tamil leader said that the DMK would stand shoulder to shoulder in the fight for achieving BC reservation. 'This is not just to fight for 42% OBC reservation but to get more than that,' she asserted. Samajwadi Party leader Dharmendra Yadav described Telangana's demand as the demand of all the weaker sections from across the country. He said the SP would remain committed until it is accepted. 'It is the weaker sections who brought the NDA to its crutches. We shall fight until this [caste survey] is implemented in all the states,' he said. Meanwhile, the absence of key AICC leaders, including Rahul Gandhi and Mallikarjun Kharge, caused some discomfiture among partymen. While the Telangana MPs moved an adjournment motion, the lack of support from the party leadership in the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha has raised questions about the efforts of CM Revanth Reddy.

‘Form mechanism to avoid delays in financial fraud cases': Madurai Bench of Madras High Court
MADURAI: The Madurai Bench of Madras High Court on Thursday came down heavily on the Tamil Nadu government and the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for lack of coordination while dealing with financial fraud cases, and directed the chief secretary, government of Tamil Nadu, and the CBI zonal head to review the procedural delays and bring in internal accountability mechanisms to prevent such lapses in future. "Both the CBI and the State government must be reminded - in no uncertain terms - that their loyalty lies with the Constitution and the rule of law, not to convenience, comfort, or political expediency," Justice B Pugalendhi observed and advised the two to work in tandem and not create roadblocks in the investigation. The order was passed on two petitions filed by the State Bank of India (SBI) last year, seeking action on its complaints against two private firms that defrauded the bank of a total of nearly Rs 17 crore by obtaining loans using fraudulent documents in 2022 and 2023. Since the CBI did not register a case, the bank was constrained to move the court. While the Additional Advocate General M Ajmal Khan submitted that the state government had already granted consent, the special public prosecutors for CBI claimed they could not register a case as the state's consent was restricted only to the named accused, leaving out the words 'unknown public servants and private individuals'. The agency apprehended that this may pave room for the unknown accused, who may be added to the case during the course of investigation, to challenge that a valid consent was not obtained against them before registration of the case.

Rahul's claims establish SIR needed to correct voters' list: Assam CM
Addressing a press conference in New Delhi earlier in the day, Gandhi claimed that over one lakh votes in the Mahadevapura assembly constituency in Karnataka were found to be fake, duplicate or bulk voter, with invalid addresses and new voters with misuse of Form 6. Sarma asserted that the SIR is essential for the northeastern state to remove names of 'Bangladeshis'. Guwahati, Aug 7 (PTI) Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Thursday referred to a section of Rahul Gandhi's criticism of the special intensive revision of electoral rolls, contending that the Congress leader extended 'indirect support' for the exercise through his comments. 'Rahul Gandhi has himself given a certificate that SIR should be conducted. There should be a unique name along with an Aadhaar number. He (Gandhi) took some North Indian names. In Assam, we have names of Bangladeshis in our voter rolls. The same names are in Barpeta, Guwahati, Kerala and Delhi. It is a disease. That is why SIR is being done in Bihar,' Sarma told reporters here. The CM said even names of dead people feature in the electoral rolls of Assam. 'That is why it is required in Assam. After a long time, Rahul Gandhi has indirectly supported the Election Commission. His claim establishes that SIR is needed. I welcome it,' Sarma said. Gandhi, the Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha, also made explosive claims of a 'huge criminal fraud' in polls through collusion between the BJP and the Election Commission. Alleging that a 'vote chori model' was being used in many constituencies across the country, Gandhi said that the judiciary needs to get involved in this because 'the democracy that we love so much, does not exist anymore'. He claimed that there was 'vote chori' (stealing of votes) of 1,00,250 votes in the Mahadevapura segment, with 11,965 duplicate voters, 40,009 voters with fake and invalid addresses, 10,452 bulk voters or single address voters, 4,132 voters with invalid photos and 33,692 voters misusing Form 6 of new voters.
