
IIT-Guwahati researchers develop sensor that can help people with voice disabilities communicate

Researchers at IIT-Guwahati have developed an underwater vibration sensor that enables automated and contactless voice recognition.Developed in collaboration with researchers from Ohio State University in the US, the sensor offers a promising alternative communication method for individuals with voice disabilities who are unable to use conventional voice-based systems, the IIT-Guwahati said in a statement on Monday.Voice recognition has become an integral part of modern life as it helps users in operating smart devices, including mobile phones and home appliances, through voice commands, it said.However, for the people with voice disorders, this technological development remains inaccessible, it said.To address this limitation, the research team has found a solution by focusing on the exhale air through the mouth while speaking, a basic physiological function, it added."In cases where individuals cannot produce sound, attempting to speak generates airflow from their lungs. When this air flows over a water surface, it produces subtle waves. The research team has developed an underwater vibration sensor which can detect these water waves and interpret speech signals without depending on audible voice, thus creating a new pathway for voice recognition," the statement said.The developed sensor is made from a conductive, chemically reactive porous sponge, it said.When placed just below the air-water interface, it captures the tiny disturbances created by exhaled air and converts them into measurable electrical signals. The research team used Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN), a type of deep learning model, to accurately recognise these subtle signal patterns.This setup allows users to communicate with devices from a distance, without the need to generate sound.The findings of the research have been published in the journal, Advanced Functional Materials.Professor Uttam Manna, who was a part of the research team, said, "It is one of the rare designs of material allowing to recognise voice based on monitoring the water wave formed at the air/water interface because of exhaling air from the mouth. This approach is likely to provide a viable solution for communication with those individuals with partially or entirely damaged vocal cords."On a lab scale, the working prototype costs Rs 3,000, the statement said.With research exploring potential industry collaboration for bringing the technology from the lab to real-world use, the cost of the final product is expected to be reduced, it said.Some of the key features of the developed sensors include AI-powered interpretation using CNNs and hands-free control of smart devices, it said.As the next step, the research team is planning to get clinical validation for the developed device.

Revenue of KTC Smart City e-buses stands 1.5 crore lower than projected
Porvorim: Kadamba Transport Corporation (KTC) has reported a significant revenue shortfall from its Smart City electric bus operations in Panaji. Against the projected revenue of Rs 3.4 crore for the fiscal year 2024-25, the actual earnings between July 2024 and March 2025 stood at approximately Rs 1.9 crore. The revenue gap is Rs 1.5 crore. Minister for transport Mauvin Godinho said, 'The shortfall in revenue is primarily attributed to the continued operation of private bus operators providing city bus services in Panaji, which has impacted the ridership on Smart City electric buses.' Godinho was replying to a question tabled by MLA Viresh Borkar. A total of 48 Smart City EVs are currently operating in Panaji and the surrounding areas. These buses ply on seven designated routes: yellow, red, indigo, blue, green, orange, and violet. In all, 18 lakh passengers travelled by these electric buses from July 2024 to March 2025, covering 11 lakh km in this duration. 'The concept of Smart City buses was to operate without conductors, for which pole-mounted validators were fixed for tapping the Smart Transit Card or validating the QR code generated on an app,' Godinho said. 'However, commuters were hesitant to use Smart City buses, adapting to the new system,' he said. The minister reiterated that private bus operations further impacted the ridership numbers.

ISRO honour for JU lunar rover
1 2 3 4 5 6 Kolkata: A 10-member Jadavpur University (JU) team, Obseract, has competed with over a 1,000 teams to rank 5th in the ISRO Robotics Challenge-2024 for designing and operating an autonomous robotic vehicle (rover) that can traverse tough terrains like the lunar surface and execute diverse tasks within a simulated extraterrestrial setting. The team, comprising students, researchers and their mentors, received the trophy on July 25 at the U R Rao Satellite Centre, Bengaluru. The contest assigned robotic tasks inspired by Chandrayaan-4 problem statements. Out of 1,008 team, 273 proposals qualified. Obseract was among the 10 teams selected to attend the final challenge round in Bengaluru in 2023. The results were declared in Aug 2024. The team is now preparing for NIDAR 2025 and International Robotics Challenge 2026. The 42kg 6-wheeled rover is worth about Rs 2.7lakh. Its arm is capable of picking up 200gm samples. It can rotate 360° rotation around a single point without taking much space. The rover has a runtime of 9 hours on simple terrain and 4 hours during heavy use of its manipulator arm. Alumni of the1984 batch of the mechanical engineering department, besides others funded the project.

Hyderabad clean energy startup HYLENR raises $3 million via Pre-Series A fundraise
HYDERABAD: HYLENR, Hyderabad-based clean energy startup that is working on harnessing low energy nuclear reaction (LENR) to develop carbon-free energy systems for industrial heat and power, has raised $3 million (approx. Rs 26 crore) in a strategic Pre-Series A funding round led by early stage investors Valour Capital and Chhattisgarh Investments Ltd that are focused on deeptech and energy transition technologies. Individual investors such as Karthik Sundar Iyer and Anant Sarda too participated in the funding round. The startup said the funding will be utilised to fast-track its products from pilot to market launch and demonstrates LENR's potential as a viable and scalable alternative to fossil fuels. The startup said it is now eyeing a $25 million fundraise from strategic investors and clean energy focused funds from the US and Europe as part of its next round. The T-Hub incubated startup said it already has pilot projects underway with government institutions and industrial players with an eye on replacing conventional fossil-based systems with sustainable, nextgen alternatives.
