Kerala records 66 electrocution deaths in four months amid safety failures
In 2022-23, there were 12 such deaths in the entire year, and eight in 2023-24. Malappuram has reported the highest number of snapped wire deaths this year, with three cases. Kozhikode reported two while Ernakulam, Kollam, and Thrissur reported one each.
G Vinod, chief electrical inspector with the state electrical inspectorate, has pointed to the absence of spacers as a major reason for snapped conductors.
'These spacers are designed to keep wires apart and prevent them from falling to the ground. Their absence has made the lines more vulnerable, especially during rain and wind,' Vinod told TNIE.
Other major causes of death include accidental contact with live wires, negligence in following safety protocols, faulty appliances, unauthorised electrical work, temporary wiring, and overhead line crossings.
'Another persistent danger is the lack of Residual Current Circuit Breakers (RCCBs) or Earth Leakage Circuit Breakers (ELCBs) in many households. These devices can prevent electrocution by detecting current leakage and automatically cutting off power. Although made mandatory in 2023, many older homes still lack them,' the officer pointed out.
Even after July 20, the fatalities have continued. Over the past two days, four more people died in separate incidents across the state. In Kasaragod, an elderly dairy farmer was electrocuted by a fallen power line in his field.

Dharmasthala burials: SIT to conduct expert survey before using radar at spot 13, no remains found at spot 14
MANGALURU: The SIT is likely to carry out an expert survey before proceeding with exhumation at spot number 13, the only site yet to be excavated, as identified by the witness-complainant. Meanwhile, the Special Investigation Team (SIT) has not found any human remains at spot number 14, where digging began on Wednesday morning. Sources in the SIT told TNIE that SIT chief DGP Pronab Mohanty, who is in Belthangady to oversee the exhumation, is likely to take expert opinion first due to multiple electricity lines and proximity of the spot to the main road. The use of the Ground Penetrating Radar(GPR) system and drone-mounted radars at the site is also under consideration, said sources. The alleged burial site no 13 is located close to the main road in the vicinity of Nethravathi bathing ghat in Dharmasthala village. Out of the 13 alleged burial sites shown by the witness-complainant, human remains were discovered in only spot no 6. On Wednesday, SIT dug spot no 14 which is about 80 meters away from spot no 11, where human remains including skull was found earlier. However, sources said no human remains have been found at spot 14.

Tambaram civic staff suspended for swindling over Rs 1.3 crore in tax payments; fraud exposed in audit
CHENNAI: Tambaram Corporation has suspended two staff members attached to its revenue department on charges of swindling over Rs 1.3 crore in tax collected from residents. The highest swindle was about Rs 1 crore by a staffer in zone 4 during the last financial year. The employee, identified as Rani, submitted fake bank receipts to the corporation without depositing the actual collection. Officials said she allegedly admitted to the wrongdoing during questioning. The amount was recovered, and departmental proceedings have been initiated against her and others involved. In another case of misappropriation, a cashier in zone 5, Murali, diverted Rs 32 lakh between January and March this year by collecting property tax, water tax, and other dues in cash, but recording them as card payments in the official system. Officials said that since card transactions typically take 24 hours to reflect in the corporation's bank accounts, he was able to pocket the funds without detection as the fraud was not immediately detected. The issue came to light during an internal audit of the corporation's accounts, initiated on the orders of corporation commissioner S Balachander. Murali was suspended, and the amount has been recovered from him. Vijayalakshmi, an official in zone 5, has been issued a memo for failing to monitor the tax collection. A senior official told TNIE that further probes are on to determine if more such irregularities occurred. 'Once the full extent of the fraud is known, stringent disciplinary and legal action, including filing police complaints, will be taken against those found guilty,' the official said. Officials said the civic body has been ensuring strict action on wrongdoings and will continue with its internal audits.

Two held brown sugar worth Rs 2 lakh
Indore: Indore crime branch on Monday said to have arrested two persons and seized 19 gram of brown sugar from their possession, with an estimated international market value of Rs 2 lakh. The accused, identified as Vinod alias Vishal Dariyani (41) and Vicky Gujarati (36), were apprehended near the Govt Veterinary Hospital in Snehalataganj. Acting on a tip-off, the crime branch team spotted two men on a motorcycle who became nervous and attempted to flee upon seeing the police vehicle. The officers quickly intercepted them. During questioning, the men confessed that they were buying brown sugar at a low price and selling it at a higher rate to drug addicts in Indore, driven by the motive of making easy money. Police confiscated the brown sugar along with the motorcycle used in the illegal activity. A case was registered against the duo under Section 8/21 of the NDPS Act at the crime branch police station. "This action is part of the senior police officials' directive to crack down on individuals and networks involved in the illegal narcotics trade in the city" Additional DCP Rajesh Dandotiya said.
