26 dead in boat accident off Italy's Lampedusa
dpa Rome The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) said on Wednesday that several migrants died in a boat accident off the Mediterranean island of Lampedusa. Filippo Ungaro, a spokesman for the agency, posted on the platform X that 26 bodies had been recovered so far. The same number of people are still missing. The Italian news agency ANSA reported that there are several dozen survivors. Search and rescue operations were still ongoing. Citing survivors, ANSA also reported that two boats left Libya on Tuesday evening with up to 100 migrants on board. The overcrowded vessels capsized on their way to Sicily, about 14 nautical miles (26 kilometres) off the coast of Lampedusa. The Italian Red Cross said 60 people - 56 men and four women - had survived the shipwreck. They were exhausted but in a stable condition, it said. Migrants frequently make attempts to cross the Mediterranean, mostly from Libya or Tunisia. This often results in serious accidents. Ungaro wrote in his X post that 675 deaths have been recorded in the central Mediterranean region so far this year. Italian Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi wrote on X of a dramatic event that once again shows 'how urgent it is to prevent dangerous sea voyages in the departure zones and to relentlessly combat the unscrupulous human trafficking that fuels this phenomenon.'

German military drops 192 tonnes of aid supplies by parachute over Gaza
Berlin: The German Armed Forces have so far dropped 192 metric tonnes of aid supplies by parachute during their mission over the Gaza Strip. There have been 18 flights so far, a spokeswoman for the Ministry of Defence said in Berlin on Wednesday. Two more flights were planned for Wednesday. The relief supplies were dropped from A400M transport aircraft on 386 pallets and are intended to land in designated drop zones. The spokeswoman said that comprehensive risk management measures were in place to prevent people on the ground from being hit. 'Satellite images are being used in particular, which can also lead to drop zones being rejected, for example,' said the spokeswoman. (DPA)

Al-Raqim introduces 70 students to art of Arabic calligraphy through its summer workshops
QNA Doha The Qatar International Arabic Calligraphy Competition Committee (Al-Raqim), affiliated with the Ministry of Endowments and Islamic Affairs and the Museum of Islamic Art, organized two training workshops in collaboration with the Ministry of Education and Higher Education's School Programs and Activities Division under the Schools and Student Affairs Department. The workshops are part of ongoing efforts to promote Islamic identity and foster a deeper appreciation of the Arabic language among youth. In a statement issued today, the Ministry of Endowments and Islamic Affairs stated that the workshops—held as part of the centres' summer programs—engaged 70 students from Omar bin Al Khattab Secondary School and Al Wakra Secondary School to introduce them to the Arabic calligraphy, develop their artistic talents, and refine their calligraphic skills. The program featured a visual presentation on the history and evolution of Arabic calligraphy, followed by hands-on training in writing the phrase 'Qatar Will Remain Free' using the Ruq'ah script by enhancing the visual balance and aesthetic harmony of the letters. The organizing committee highlighted that this initiative aligns with the educational vision of the Al-Raqim competition, which aims to revive the art of Arabic calligraphy, strengthen the connection between younger generations and the nation's visual and historical identity, and underscore its deep-rooted association with the Holy Quran and the artistic embellishment of its manuscripts through the centuries. Participating students expressed their enthusiasm and gratitude for the experience, which allowed them to explore their calligraphic talents, develop an appreciation for artistic expression, and deepen their sense of cultural identity.
