Princess Diana's trip to gay bar with Freddie Mercury resurfaces as new book details late royal's night out in drag

New York Post29-04-2025

Princess Diana's night out at a gay bar with Freddie Mercury is making headlines again as a new book recounts the late royal's escape from the palace dressed in male drag.
The story is one of many enmeshed in Diana's mythology dissected in 'Dianaworld: An Obsession' (out Tuesday) by biographer Edward White, who cites actress Cleo Rocos' 2013 memoir for evidence of the princess' wild London night.
In 'The Power of Positive Drinking,' Rocos claimed that the she, along with her friend Kenny Everett and Mercury, disguised the late Princess of Wales in drag so she could go to one of London's most popular gay bars, the Royal Vauxhall Tavern.

The trip allegedly happened in 1988 after Rocos, the princess, the Queen frontman and Everett spent an afternoon 'drinking champagne in front of reruns of 'The Golden Girls' with the sound turned down' so they could improvise dialogue with 'a much naughtier storyline.'
When Diana — 'in full mischief mode' — learned of her friends' plans to go to a gay bar that evening, she insisted on going.
Rocos and Everett attempted to dissuade her, with Everett telling Di that the bar was 'not for you ' and 'full of hairy gay men.' The princess was intransigent. Mercury then supposedly chimed in with, 'Go on, let the girl have some fun,' and the matter was settled.

Everett decided that, if the show must go on, he would disguise Di in drag: 'a camouflage army jacket, hair tucked up into a leather cap and dark aviator sunglasses.'
'Scrutinizing her in the half-light we decided that the most famous icon of the modern world might just . . . JUST, pass for a rather eccentrically dressed gay male model,' Rocos recalled. 'She did look like a beautiful young man.'
As the group 'inched through the leather throngs and thongs' at the Royal Vauxhall, Diana's friends were terrified the ruse would collapse.

'When we walked in…we felt she was obviously Princess Diana and would be discovered at any minute. But people just seemed to blank her. She sort of disappeared. But she loved it,' Rocos remembered.
'We were nudging each other like naughty schoolchildren. Diana and Freddie were giggling… Once the transaction was completed, we looked at one another, united in our triumphant quest. We did it!'
Per Rocos, the princess sent Everett's clothes back to him the following morning with a note: 'We must do it again!'

The story has been disputed by Mercury's former assistant and friend Peter Freestone, however.
'No, not at all,' Freestone replied when asked by Express Online in 2019 whether the night out ever took place. 'Maybe Diana went with Kenny but Freddie wasn't there. He never met her.'
As White wrote in his new book, Diana's trip to a London gay bar with Freddie Mercury 'sounds far-fetched, like one of the many apocryphal yarns of royal transformation that litter folklore and fairytales.' Yet, it also fits with Diana's documented penchant for escaping royal life undercover so she could experience the wider world.

'[T]here are other, slightly less fantastical, tales about Diana disguising herself on nights out, such as when she accompanied Hasnat Khan to Ronnie Scott's jazz bar in Soho, the princess obscuring her true self beneath a wig and glasses,' White emphasized.
Apocryphal or not, the story — which inspired the cabaret musical, 'Royal Vauxhall' — 'has been taken up as an illustration of her connection with the gay community and a metaphor for her own search for a family in which she felt truly accepted,' White added.

Pragmata Feels Like An Xbox 360 Game In All The Best Ways

I had forgotten all about Pragmata by the time Capcom was setting up appointments to play the puzzle shooter at Summer Game Fest. We're five years removed from its original announcement, and Capcom is no stranger to quietly hiding a game away and never releasing it (remember Deep Down?). So, I let the game disappear from my memory until its name showed up in my inbox. Perhaps it's fitting then that Pragmata feels a bit like a game out of time, as its gruff old man protagonist, slow-moving enemies, and brutalist sci-fi aesthetic are all evocative of the over-the-shoulder shooters from the PS360 era. Given those seemingly bygone qualities, it'd be easy for Pragmata to feel rote and dated, but what I played was just inventive enough to feel novel. I was super impressed with it. I've affectionately referred to Pragmata as 'The Space of Us,' since it's bringing back that early 2010s dad/daughter dynamic of The Last of Us, Bioshock Infinite, and The Walking Dead, yet with a science fiction spin. Hugh, a human man, is the primary playable character, but Diana, an android made to look like a human child, rides on his back as the two of them make their way through a derelict space station overrun by hostile, plodding robots. At first, Hugh's guns don't do much damage to these walking toasters. To lower their impenetrable defenses, Diana has to hack into their systems. The tricky part is that you have to manage both characters' ability sets simultaneously and in real time. On his own, Hugh's ability set would have felt unremarkable. Man points, shoots, and dodges incoming attacks like any third-person shooter protagonist does. Separate from Hugh's combat, Diana's hacking mini-games, in which you move a cursor through a grid of obstacles and buffs to reach a defense-downing destination, are pretty straightforward. Putting them together is the peanut butter and jelly that makes a delicious sandwich. Pragmata's multitasking is what sets it apart from other games in a stale genre. Separately, these mechanics are simple, but together they create a challenging, satisfying loop that can feel frantic even when you're trying to solve a more methodical puzzle. It's very easy to get so distracted doing one action that you neglect the other. More than a few times, I ended up on the wrong side of an attack because I was so focused on solving one of Diana's puzzles and wasn't paying enough attention to dodge an incoming blow. This was all happening as I was learning the controls, which makes me wonder how well this game flows as the player becomes more adept at juggling both characters, the enemies become more powerful, and Diana's hacking becomes more complex. There's a lot of potential for this game to be either incredibly special or insufferably frustrating, and I'm eager to find out which one it is when it launches in the latest news, Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

Disney, Universal sue AI firm for copyright infringement: ‘Bottomless pit of plagiarism'

Disney and Universal have filed a copyright lawsuit against popular artificial intelligence image-generator Midjourney on Wednesday, marking the first time major Hollywood companies have enter the legal battle over generative AI. Filed in federal district court in Los Angeles, the complaint claims Midjourney pirated the libraries of the two Hollywood studios to generate and distribute 'endless unauthorized copies' of their famed characters, such as Darth Vader from Star Wars and the Minions from Despicable Me. 'Midjourney is the quintessential copyright free-rider and a bottomless pit of plagiarism. Piracy is piracy, and whether an infringing image or video is made with AI or another technology does not make it any less infringing,' the companies state in the complaint. Advertisement Midjourney didn't immediately respond to a request for comment Wednesday. In a 2022 interview with The Associated Press, Midjourney CEO David Holz described his image-making service as 'kind of like a search engine' pulling in a wide swath of images from across the internet. He compared copyright concerns about the technology with how such laws have adapted to human creativity. 4 Midjourney CEO David Holz said in 2022 that his image-making service is 'kind of like a search engine.' prima91 – 4 The studios claimed the San Francisco-based AI company ignored their requests to stop infringing on their copyrighted works. jixiang – Advertisement 'Can a person look at somebody else's picture and learn from it and make a similar picture?' Holz said. 'Obviously, it's allowed for people and if it wasn't, then it would destroy the whole professional art industry, probably the nonprofessional industry too. To the extent that AIs are learning like people, it's sort of the same thing and if the images come out differently then it seems like it's fine.' Major AI developers don't typically disclose their data sources but have argued that taking troves of publicly accessible online text, images and other media to train their AI systems is protected by the 'fair use' doctrine of American copyright law. The studio' case joins a growing number of lawsuits filed against developers of AI platforms — such as OpenAI, Anthropic — in San Francisco and New York. Meanwhile, the first major copyright trial of the generative AI industry is underway in London, pitting Getty Images against artificial intelligence company Stability AI.
