BBC announces casting for new crime family drama Mint
Created, written and directed by the acclaimed filmmaker behind the award-winning film Scrapper, the eight-part television series is a darkly comic and unconventional drama about a crime family's inner life, told through Regan's unique and distinctive voice. It explores the question of what love might feel like when everyone outside of your family is terrified of you.
At the centre of Mint is Shannon (Emma Laird - The Brutalist, Mayor of Kingstown), the naïve and fiercely romantic daughter of the area's dominant crime family. Shannon is desperately searching for love in the shadow of her gangster father, Dylan (Sam Riley - Firebrand, Rebecca)), devoted mum Cat (Laura Fraser - Patience, Breaking Bad), older brother Luke (Lewis Gribben - Somewhere Boy, Black Mirror) and the indomitable family matriarch, grandma Ollie (Lindsay Duncan - TrueLove, Sherwood).
Having grown up protected within the surreal, yet violent confines of the 'family business', things are set to change once Arran – played by acting newcomer Ben Coyle-Larner (better known as musician, Loyle Carner) - arrives on the scene.
A story about soaring romance and crushing heartbreak, love, infatuation, darkness and tragedy, Shannon is trying to find herself whilst dealing with the plain weirdness of living alongside the lawless world of the criminal elite, and pursuing her own version of power.
Charlotte Regan says: 'I had a little cry the other day thinking about how incredible this cast are. Absolute emotional wreck. But I honestly can't imagine these characters being brought into the world by better human beings. Every single one of them is going to smash it and I feel so grateful to have them all onboard.'
Mint was commissioning by Lindsay Salt, Director of BBC Drama. The eight-part series is filming in Glasgow, and is created, written, directed and executive produced by Charlotte Regan. It is made for BBC iPlayer and BBC One by House Productions, one of BBC Studios' owned production labels, and Fearless Minds. It is produced by Angus Lamont (The Wonder, Tin Star), and executive produced by Tessa Ross, Juliette Howell and Theo Barrowclough for House Productions, Jolyon Symonds for Fearless Minds, and Rebecca Ferguson for the BBC. Mint will be distributed internationally by BBC Studios.

'Intoxicating' thriller dubbed a 'true classic of the genre' streaming for free
The film remains a popular choice with fans An "intoxicating" thriller that has been dubbed a "masterpiece" and a "true classic" will be available to stream for free. The Silence of the Lambs was released in 1991 and despite its older release, remains a popular choice with fans. Starring two time Academy Award winners Jodie Foster and Anthony Hopkins, the film follows FBI student Clarice Starling who is assigned to help on the search of a serial killer. She soon seeks the help of Dr Hannibal Lecter *the cannibal* who is held in a maximum security hospital. Dr Hannibal Lecter is a character created by American author Thomas Harris and has featured in the 1986 film Manhunter, but his appearance in The Silence of the Lambs is arguably the most famous adaptation. Both Hopkins and Foster bagged Oscar awards for their performances, with Hopkins scooping the Best Leading Actor award and Foster clinching the Best Leading Actress accolade at the 1992 ceremony. It also nabbed the coveted Best Picture, Best Director and Best Adapted Screenplay awards. And the film remains a hit with fans with many describing it as a "masterpiece" and a timeless classic". The popular choice will be available to stream on BBC Two on Sunday evening (August 17), as well as BBC iPlayer. It is currently available to buy on prime Video. A synopsis reads: "FBI trainee Clarice Starling, enticing insights from confined killer Hannibal Lecter, shares her nightmare memory in the hope of stopping a serial killer before his latest victim dies. Multi-award-winning thriller." With an impressive score of 95% on Rotten Tomatoes, one person said: "A complete masterpiece throughout the ages." Another commented: "Definitely a classic. The film set new standards and is still very suspenseful and creepy even by today's standards." A third wrote: "One of the best movies of the 1990s if not all time. incredible story, amazing actors and a master class in film making." A fourth replied: "The Silence of the Lambs is an outstanding five-star thriller that completely pulled me in. Anthony Hopkins and Jodie Foster deliver unforgettable performances, making every scene intense and gripping. "The psychological tension, unsettling atmosphere, and smart storytelling kept me hooked from start to finish. It's a masterful film that left a lasting impression on me." Another praised: "Gritty, disgusting and suspenseful, it gets deep under your skin and makes you gag even after three decades. The undoubted highlight being Anthony Hopkins' performance." Writing for the Winnipeg Free Press, Paul McKie described it as: "The Silence of the Lambs is one of the most intoxicating and absorbing thrillers ever made." Directed by Jonathan Demme, the film also stars Scott Glen as well as Ted Levine and Anthony Heald. The Silence of the Lambs will be available to watch on BBC Two at 10pm on Sunday, August 17 before arriving on BBC iPlayer.

An acclaimed psychological horror film that scared fans sleepless and left them 'paranoid for days' is now streaming for free. Jordan Peele's second movie after Get Out, Us saw him dubbed the 'modern day Hitchcock' in breathless first reactions thanks to the film's blend of big ideas, terrifying scares and exhilarating performances. Starring Oscar winner Lupita Nyong'o, Winston Duke, Shahadi Wright Joseph and Elisabeth Moss, Us follows the Wilson family as they return to the beachfront home where Adelaide (Nyong'o) grew up as a child for a holiday. But Adelaide is haunted by a traumatic experience from the past, and her nightmarish worst fears over something bad happening soon become a reality when four masked strangers descend up on the house, forcing the Wilsons into a fight for survival. In a creepy twist, these masked individuals turn out to be twisted, violent versions of themselves, making the Wilsons – quite literally – their own worst enemies. Us was added to BBC iPlayer again this week for a limited time only, having first been available to watch there last year, where it sits among other iconic horror movies like The Omen and Halloween. It is currently available to watch for the next 28 days, if you're a horror fan who's already already on top of big recent horror cinema releases like Together and Weapons. The flick boasts a very impressive 93% rating on aggregator site Rotten Tomatoes from 552 individual critic reactions since its release in 2019; that it has sustained such a high score with such a large volume of reviews also confirms an overwhelmingly positive consensus. 'Jordan Peele's Us is one of the most original horror titles in recent years. This movie is destined for greatness,' declared Jordan Barkan for Dread Central at the time, while Empire magazine called it 'a stunning sophomore effort from Jordan Peele'. 'The showpiece scares in Us are the opposite of ordinary horror jolts: its big shocks dawn slow, and they don't recede,' wrote Robbie Colin in his five-star review for The Telegraph, calling it 'a sinister masterclass in spiralling terror'. 'It's a film that confirms Peele as that rarest of things – a true auteur,' said Dan Stubbs for NME, while Jamie East called it 'the first conscientious horror' in his five-star review for The Sun. For Metro, Rishma Dosani described Us as 'a film that will stay with you for days'. 'What Peele manages to do so well is leave you breathless with sheer terror one second, and unable to stifle a laugh the next,' she added in her four-star review. 'The worst show on TV' might finally be ending and viewers are surprisingly sad
Fans of Mrs Brown's Boys have been left stunned by the very serious end to last night's episode after Agnes fell into a coma. Played by show creator Brendan O'Carroll, foul-mouthed family matriarch Agnes – aka Mammy – powers the divisive sitcom, which follows the exploit of her and her six children and other family members in Dublin. The broad humour of Mrs Brown's Boys has seen it criticised by those who don't like it since it first aired in 2011, with the BBC describing its brand of comedy as 'sauciness and slapstick'. But the programme has continued to be popular enough for its current fifth season, not to mention numerous interim specials, to some how reach over 50 episodes in total. But as episode three concluded on Friday, some viewers were left worrying that this could be it for Agnes as she lay unresponsive in her hospital bed, surrounded by her family. After the doctor came in and announced, 'I'm sorry, but I'm afraid I'm going to have to turn the machine off,' close-ups of distraught Browns including Agnes's daughter Cathy (former Strictly Come Dancing star Jennifer Gibney) followed, before the camera pulled back on Agnes herself while sombre music played. 'Sad episode of #Mrsbrownsboys,' tweeted Thomas Feerick, while Andy Verrall observed: 'What a strange ending! Has she passed away?' 'Caught this on the TV by accident – absolutely agog at the rather downbeat fashion in which Mrs Brown's Boys has concluded,' wrote CJ as Damian North posted: 'RIP Mrs Brown – thanks for the laughs.' 'Decided to watch Mrs Brown a few days ago and was gagged at them killing her off,' shared @OricorioWho. Others weren't quite so upset though, with David asking: 'Is she dead? Is this the last ever series?? Fingers crossed!!!' 'She's DEAD. Finally, we're free from the curse of the worst show on TV,' celebrated Elle, while @TweetPeepGhost chimed in: 'Please let it be true that #MrsBrownsBoys has just died.' However, some fans felt they were in on the joke, with one episode left of the series to go. 'Agnes won't be dead there'll be a joke as to why they have to turn the machine off, like she doesn't really need it,' predicted fan Kate, with a laugh-cry emoji. Although the next episode won't air on BBC One until Friday August 29 due to the Women's Rugby World Cup match between England and the US next week, it is already available to watch on BBC iPlayer.
