Remake of cult 80s horror with 92% on Rotten Tomatoes gets extreme rating
A gruesome horror film thought to be 'unreleasable' is finally coming to UK cinemas, and it has an extreme rating.
The Toxic Avenger, a reboot of the 1984 film of the same name, initially premiered at Fantastic Fest in 2023 before having screenings at Beyond Fest and Sitges.
It boasts a star-studded cast including Game Of Thrones star Peter Dinklage and Lord Of The Rings icon Elijah Wood alongside Jacob Tremblay, Taylour Paige, Kevin Bacon, Sarah Niles, Julia Davis, and Julian Kostov.
But it has lain dormant for several years after being dubbed 'unreleasable' due to its gory conent, until it was resurrected by Cineverse for US audiences and Signature Entertainment here in the UK.
The Toxic Avenger will be released in UK cinemas on August 29, but fans have been warned of its 'ultraviolent' content including 'mutant nudity.'
Bloody Disgusting reports that the film will be released entirely uncut and unrated in cinemas, with a warning for: 'ultra violent/toxic content, p**s play, mutant nudity, hilarious harm and gnarly theater fun.'
The warning also jokingly stresses that anyone under the age of 18 should not 'even try to get in' to cinemas to see the film.
The Toxic Avenger follows janitor Winston Gooze (Dinklage), who, after a freak accident, transforms into the mutant vigilante Toxie.
With his mop in hand, he battled everything from corrupt CEOs to hardened criminals while also trying to salvage his complicated relationship with his son.
It is the fifth installment in the franchise originally created by Lloyd Kaufman and based on the Marvel comics of the same name.
Unlike your average Marvel film, however, The Toxic Avenger was branded 'absurdly gory' and 'extremely silly' by those lucky enough to see it.
After a period of silence, in 2024 it was announced the film would not be released due to difficulties securing a distributor, being described as 'unreleasable' with creatives behind the film attributing this to its graphic violence and gore.
Film producer Adam Masnyk took to X at the time to say The Toxic Avenger was 'not safe enough to market', and that it could well become lost media.
But that will no longer be the case, with Cineverse sharing in January that they had acquired distribution rights for the films with plans to release it theatrically later this year.
Speaking about the news in a statement, director Macon Blair said: 'I'm beyond grateful to the team behind The Toxic Avenger who were so supportive and steady-handed as we searched for the perfect distribution partner for our film.
'It's so cool that folks will have the chance to see this in theatres, it's a fun, rowdy movie you wanna see with a crowd. Mutant hero smashes bad guys with a mop: perfect entertainment for the whole family!
'Our goal was always to preserve the heart and spirit of the original Toxie (which was seared into my brain at a very young age) and try to make something that Troma fans would dig and, at the same time, do something with the character that feels fresh.
'Lloyd and Michael at Troma have been a blast to work with; absolutely everyone at Legendary are stars, and I can't wait to start working with the champs at Cinverse to bring this version of Toxie to fans new and old.'
Cineverse chairman and SEO Chris McGurk added: 'The Toxic Avenger isn't just a great film; it's an important one.
'Peter Dinklage's transformative performance and Macon Blair's fearless direction deliver a story that speaks to the anxieties of our time with outrageous humour and unflinching creativity.
'This is the kind of movie that major studios are averse to releasing because it dares to push boundaries, but Cineverse is rooted in championing bold, uncompromising storytelling.
'We believe audiences are ready – and eager – for films like this to take centre stage.'
Cineverse acquired all US and Canadian theatrical, home entertainment, and streaming rights.
Signature Entertainment, meanwhile, acquired UK rights to The Toxic Avenger, with acquisitions and development manager Katie Wilkinson-Javes announcing in a statement: 'The Toxic Avenger is a perfect example of the type of super entertaining commercial genre movie that we're always looking for at Signature.
'Macon Blair's fresh take on the cult anti-hero radiates pure cinema madness and we can't wait to introduce UK and Irish audiences to Peter Dinklage's Toxic Avenger later this year.'
The Toxic Avenger currently sits at a 92% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with many critics praising its practical effects and Dinklage's performance as Toxie.
In their review, The Daily Dead wrote: 'An energetic and entertaining reboot that nonetheless struggles to prove the independent, lead-with-bad-taste worlds of Lloyd Kaufman and mainstream studio moviemaking are compatible.' More Trending
The Mary Sue said: 'The Toxic Avenger is exactly as advertised. It does what it says on the tin. It's comically violent, absurdly gory, and extremely silly. But it's also a timely 'eat the rich' story infused with an earnest working-class perspective.'
AwardsWatch agreed, adding: 'Utter absurdity. Bonkers. Ridiculous…it's a delight to say that this reimagining of Kaufman's iconic mop-wielding toxic avenger tale is entertaining and shockingly heartfelt.'
Collider wrote: 'A bonkers & bloody delight. Macon Blair's Toxic Avenger is a hugely enjoyable & rowdy escape that also feels like a celebration of movie magic, especially the wild things one can create with ingenuity, practical effects & a lot of passion for the genre.'
The Toxic Avenger will be released in UK cinemas on August 29 .

A pursuit involving a tank has been filmed in the city centre over the weekend. The huge armoured vehicle sped down the street being pursued by three NYPD police cars with red and blue lights flashing. The vehicle appeared to be 'firing' one of its prop guns, with light being seen coming from the weapon as it soared along the road. Two other cars were speeding behind the tank, one carrying a device used to trigger the blast. As the speeding police cars approached a junction, a huge fireball erupted sending out a ferocious boom as part of the stunt. The pursuing cops cars were sent screeching past the flames, with one weaving and skidding as part of the scene. Another explosion was triggered as the chase moved further down Bothwell Street. The blasts were triggered by devices attached to two motors involved in the chase. The stunt cars had boxes attached to long metal beams running behind them. The Met Office said: 'Gusts of 50 to 70 mph are expected, and are likely to reach 80 to 90 mph on exposed coasts, hills and bridges.' The Met Office has warned that Storm Floris is expected to bring gusts of up to 90mph tomorrow morning. The amber alert for "unseasonably strong and disruptive winds" is in place from 10am until 10pm, covering the central belt, Tayside, Grampian, Strathclyde, Lothian Borders and Highlands. It's the second-highest warning possible, made more dangerous by the fact that trees are still in leaf and more liable to collapse. A separate yellow warning for wind has been issued for the rest of Scotland as well as the north of England from 6am tomorrow until midnight. Forecasters warned that the first named storm since January could bring travel disruption with trains, buses and ferry services facing cancellations and delays. The storm is also predicted to force the closure of some roads and bridges, as heavy rain may also contribute to the disruption in places. The Met Office said: "Storm Floris will bring a spell of unusually strong west or northwesterly winds to much of Scotland during Monday. 'Gusts of 50 to 70 mph are expected for many parts, and are likely to reach 80 to 90 mph on some exposed coasts, hills and bridges. 'Western coastal areas will see the highest gusts between late morning and early afternoon, the strongest winds then transferring to northeastern Scotland by late afternoon/early evening.' Filming for the new Spider-Man movie has already seen several intense stunts being captured this weekend as locals gathered to watch the action. Earlier today, Spider-Man stood on top of a tank as it flew down Bothwell Street in a chaotic car stunt. TOP FILMING LOCATION THE flick has brought movie-fever to Glasgow once again, with some punters dressed as Spider-Man putting in an appearance. Holland, 29, returns as the titular character, with real-life girlfriend Zendaya, 28, as Michelle Jones "MJ" Watson, Jon Bernthal, 48, portraying The Punisher, and Charlie Cox, 42, as Daredevil. Filming is set to move further along into Merchant City after Wednesday, August 13, with scenes are also expected to be shot on Glassford Street and Virginia Street. It is just the latest lot of filming taking place in Glasgow. Earlier this year, Hollywood hunk Glen Powell filmed scenes for sci-fi flick Ghost Writer on Bothwell Street. A huge scaffolding structure safety rig was set up around the tank for Spider-Man to be harnessed in as he stood on the roof. Three New York-style police cars followed in hot pursuit as they sped down the road with their lights flashing behind him. And on Saturday, a huge chase scene saw cars thrown into the air as a huge crowd watched. A black film car raced ahead of the tank as it rumbled down the road, and a taxi and a van attached to hydraulic ramps were thrown into the air as the war machine sped past. A high-tech drone with a camera attached was zooming overhead to get aerial shots of the stunt as the tank came to a screeching halt at the bottom of the street. Glasgow now resembles the Big Apple for Holland's latest MCU appearance. Historic street signs have been covered with decor from Manhattan, while hot dog carts and newsstands are scattered among the streets. Movie vehicles are also being stored on West Campbell Street. The road has been lined with an ambulance and New York Fire Department pick-up truck, as well as scores of iconic New York yellow taxis and NYPD police cars. Glasgow City Council told the Scottish Sun that production crews would make the decision on whether filming would go ahead. XM2 could not comment when approached by the Scottish Sun.

And today, Holland was spotted in his iconic Spider-Man suit walking along the streets as crews prepared to film more scenes. He was seen chatting to director Destin Daniel Cretton and other members of the production team as they walked across the set. They then began filming a chaotic car stunt, which saw Spider-Man standing on top of a tank as it flew down Bothwell Street.
