VJ Edgecombe reveals why he chose to wear a rare jersey number with the Sixers

USA Today3 days ago
After wearing No. 7 at Baylor University, Philadelphia 76ers rookie VJ Edgecombe will begin his career by donning a number never previously worn by a player in franchise history.
Edgecombe was forced to choose a new number because No. 7 is currently occupied by 19-year veteran Kyle Lowry, who re-signed with the Sixers on July 7. With his favorite number off the board, Edgecombe opted to go with 77.
The third overall pick will be the first Sixers player to wear No. 77, according to Basketball-Reference. Only 23 players in history have gone with that number, including Los Angeles Lakers guard Luka Dončić and Toronto Raptors guard Jamison Battle.
Edgecombe was the Big 12 Freshman of the Year, averaging 15 points, 5.6 rebounds, 3.2 assists and 2.1 steals on 34% shooting from 3-point range at Baylor. He finished in double figures 27 times, including a season-high 30 points on Jan. 22 in a win over Kansas State.
The Bahamian guard debuted with the Sixers in the NBA Summer League, averaging 21.5 points, eight rebounds, four assists, two steals and 1.5 blocks on 42.5% shooting from the field. He was limited to two appearances due to a left thumb sprain.
Edgecombe told teammate Paul George on "Podcast P" that he'd stick with No. 77 should he win Rookie of the Year or if the Sixers win the title next season. Currently boasting the third-best odds to win the annual award, Edgecombe may be wearing that number for a long time.
Note: Throughout August, Rookie Wire is looking at every first-round pick and why each player selected their respective jersey number as they make the jump to the NBA.

Adem Bona, former Sixers guard on Turkish national team for EuroBasket

EuroBasket 2025 continues to approach as teams around the continent begin preparing for a run at the championship late in the summer. Teams will head to either Cyprus, Finland, Latvia, or Poland and will look to lead their country to a championship in 2025. The Philadelphia 76ers will have a representative in the tournament as second-year big man Adem Bona is set to play for the Turkish national team per Basket News. Bona, a second-round pick out of UCLA in 2024, averaged 5.8 points and 4.2 rebounds with the Sixers in the 2024-25 season. Bona will be joined by a former Sixers guard who should be familiar to everybody in the form of Furkan Korkmaz. The former first-round pick in 2016 played seven seasons in the NBA, all with the Sixers, and averaged 6.8 points while shooting 35.6% from deep. Bona and Korkmaz will look to help Turkey take home the EuroBasket title when the tournament begins on Aug. 27. It runs through Sep. 14 when the title game will take place.

Celtics forward Jayson Tatum seen without boot or brace at Patriots training camp

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (AP) — Jayson Tatum was at spotted practice on Wednesday —- just not on a basketball court. The Celtics star made an appearance at the New England Patriots' joint training camp practice with the Washington Commanders. Tatum, who had surgery in May to repair the ruptured right Achilles tendon injury he suffered in Boston's Eastern Conference semifinal loss to the New York Knicks, was seen walking without a boot or brace. It's a welcomed sign for Tatum as he continues a rehabilitation that is expected to keep him out most — if not all — of next NBA season. Tatum mostly stood on the sideline during his appearance Wednesday, interacting with Patriots players and Washington quarterback Jayden Daniels. Tatum has been seen in multiple social media videos working out in the weight room at the Celtics' team practice facility. Boston president of basketball operations Brad Stevens said in June that the All-Star is progressing well following surgery. But asked about whether the team had put a potential timeline on Tatum's return, Stevens was definitive that there would be no rushing the star's recovery process. ___ AP NBA: Kyle Hightower, The Associated Press
