Travel expert's 'genius' hack means you can sleep undisturbed on every flight

Daily Mirror4 days ago
A TikTok content creator and female solo-traveller shared how passengers can get a good rest during a long-flight, using a spare blanket and an empty middle seat
Escaping the hustle and bustle of the city is needed, especially during the summer months. As many Brits look forward to hopping on the plane and flying away, a good rest beforehand is key for a good start. Ideally, you'd want to relax and get a good sleep before arriving at your destination, but that's not always the case.

Unless you're flying on business or first class, a good sleep on the plane isn't always possible. Being stuck in the same position for hours trying to find the perfect position can be daunting, but this hack is going to help you.

This is all thanks to TikTok user @travelwithell, a content creator who travels around the world sharing her experiences as a solo female traveller. Her 36-second video has over 69.000 views and over a thousand likes.

She demonstrated how she was able to sleep during her flight home from Bali. Despite being lucky enough to have the middle seat empty, it wasn't enough, so she had to come up with a solution.
Hoping to travel comfortably and get a good sleep, Ell had this one idea that completely blew everyone's mind. It didn't take her much effort, and she just needed a blanket.
This 'genius' idea, as one comment described it, is the perfect method to stop your feet from slipping off while you're sleeping. Using an extra blanket from the middle seat, Ell tried a knot and put it around the armrest. She wrote in the caption: "Then I put the rest of the blanket in, like a hammock cradle position around my feet so that they're really secure and won't move."
Another user commented: 'Think smart, not hard, my sister,' with a third one suggesting: 'You can sorta do it with the seatbelt as well if your plane doesn't come with a blanket.'
A 'neighbour-free seat' experience
Alternatively, travellers can actually book an entire row in economy. It can be done via the airline's website at the time of purchase by selecting 'neighbour-free seat' or 'seat plus' for an extra fee. Not only does it provide passengers with the three seats available for their personal use, but it's hundreds of pounds cheaper than upgrading to business or first class.
Nonetheless, paying for three seats on an airplane for a neighbour-free experience isn't always guaranteed. During oversold flights, as well as in other circumstances, such as aircraft changes and operational need, airlines assign empty seats to waiting customers.

The 3 beach hacks every mum needs this summer & how to keep your belongings safe when heading into the pool

SUMMER is officially here, and for mums, that often means navigating the beautiful chaos of beach days - juggling bags, snacks, sun cream, and eager little ones ready to splash. While a day by the sea is pure joy, keeping essentials safe and hassle-free can be a real challenge, especially when you're trying to take a refreshing dip. 3 3 But one brilliant mum has shared some game-changing beach hacks that every parent needs this summer. Ollie, known as @ on TikTok, recently went viral with a video simply captioned: "Beach hacks every mum needs this summer!" She kicks off her genius tips by tackling that universal parent struggle: applying sun cream to a child's face without it stinging their eyes. Her solution? Give your child two spoons and have them cover their eyes with them while you spray on the sun cream. Simple, yet incredibly effective - no more tears from stinging eyes. Next, Ollie revealed a clever trick for securing your belongings. Tired of sandals going astray? She demonstrated how to use a plastic cable tie, looping it through her flip-flops and then securely fastening them to the sunbed. She applied the same smart thinking to her sunglasses, placing them safely in their case before using another cable tie to attach the case firmly to the back of the sunbed. The video has gained 206.1k views and 19 comments after two days of being shared. One wrote: 'Awesome summer hacks for the pool.' Stacey Solomon shows off hack she swears by to make packing for holiday much easier - & you can nab it from Ikea for £6 Airport costs If you're planning to drop someone off at a UK airport this summer, prepare for a shock. New research from the RAC reveals that airport drop-off charges have surged by up to 33% in the past year, with over half of UK airports either raising or introducing these fees. This stands in stark contrast to most major EU airports, where dropping off passengers close to the terminal remains completely free. Since last summer, eleven out of 20 UK airports analysed by the RAC have increased their "kiss and fly" charges - the fees levied for the most convenient drop-off spots. 3 For instance, Belfast City, Birmingham, Bristol, Edinburgh, Gatwick, Heathrow, Liverpool John Lennon, Newcastle, and Southampton all saw their fees jump by £1. Leeds Bradford and Glasgow added 50p to their charges. The changes aren't just about increases either; some airports have introduced new fees entirely. Cardiff, which previously had no charge, now levies a £3 fee, while Luton, which had no "kiss and fly" area last summer due to a car park fire, now charges £5. London City remains the sole UK airport in the analysis that still offers free drop-offs directly outside its terminal. While prices were frozen at Aberdeen, Belfast International, Bournemouth, East Midlands, Manchester, and Stansted, the overall trend paints a clear picture. The RAC's findings highlight a significant difference compared to Europe, where eight of the 10 busiest EU airports, including major hubs like Paris Charles de Gaulle, Frankfurt, and Madrid, charge nothing for drop-offs. This means a quick goodbye at many UK airports now comes with a much higher price tag. Holiday packing tips Jemma Solomon, aka The Label Lady has got 5 packing tips to help you get organised for your next holiday. 1. Write a list Think about all the essentials you need to take with you; suncream, medicine, a few games for the kids, beach towels, and write everything in one list, which you can tick off as you add it to your suitcase. Or for complete ease, try Google's AI app - Gemini - which will create a list for you and help you not over pack. 2. Involve your kids Jemma said: 'My girls are getting older, they're 11 and nine, and they enjoy helping to pack. So I send them a list, and say 'this is what you need' and they follow the list. 'And then I give them a rucksack each - and say to them 'you can have whatever you want in there as long as it's not liquid', and they can take that on the plane. And that's their 'home away from home' items.' 3. Try a hack or two She said: "I think they all work, but for different reasons - and you've just got to pick the right one for your trip. "Rolling your clothes is really good to stop your clothes from getting creases. And if you're trying to get a lot of items into your case, it's a space saver. 'Packing cubes are great - for example, I'm going on holiday with my three kids and we're all using the same suitcase for our clothes. "These handy compartments let you separate your clothes, toiletries and tech into designated cubes, maximising luggage space by keeping your items compressed and neatly stacked. "I love taking them abroad with the family and it means my kids can easily take charge of their own items once we've arrived." 4. Decant beauty products Do you really need to take full-size bottles of shampoo and conditioner with you? The beauty industry has evolved so much, you can now buy shampoo bars or sheets - which are much lighter and smaller. Or, if you'll be popping to the shops when you're abroad, consider buying some items when you arrive. 5. Get organised before you come home Jemma said: 'When you repack on holiday [before coming home], the trick is to separate clean from dirty clothes. 'Also pack it in some form of order - so lights, darks, colours for items that need washing, or if you wash your clothes by person in the household, piles for each person. "Then you can put it straight into the washing machine. Do it straight away, don't leave it."

Tourist names one Greek island that's 'dead' – so now's a good time for bargain holiday

A holidaymaker on a popular Greek island has expressed his shock at seeing the popular tourist destination so deserted - and encouraged others to travel there at a discounted rate If you're seeking a last-minute European getaway in the sunshine, one traveller reckons he's discovered the perfect destination after revealing it's brimming with available accommodation. Travel blogger, Robert Sherman maintains that renowned Greek islands are "dead" as he provided insight into his experience in Santorini. "Did Euro summers get cancelled this year?" he questioned in a TikTok clip. ‌ "I'm in Santorini right now and this island is dead - there is availability all over the island," he claimed. Robert proceeded to voice his astonishment as he revealed that despite it being a weekend in mid-July during peak season - rates are "low" owing to insufficient demand. ‌ "I don't even have a hotel booked tonight," he added. "I'm about to walk into town and pick out my hotel at a discounted rate." ‌ In a subsequent video, Robert demonstrated the "one thing" visitors should do if they fancy joining him on the seemingly abandoned island, however. "If you do one thing in Santorini, see the island by boat," he advised whilst participating in an excursion alongside a small group of fellow tourists. Hundreds of TikTok users shared their opinions on Santorini's seeming drop in appeal. One speculated: "Santorini and Mykonos have priced themselves out due to pure greed." ‌ Some are attributing the quietness to recent seismic activity, with one TikTok user exclaiming: "Why do people have an opinion when there is no knowledge? Santorini this summer has low prices and availability cause there were earthquakes in the winter so many people chose this summer to avoid Santorini. All the other islands are fully booked." A Greek expat chimed in: "As a Greek living abroad who has visited the islands every summer for the past 15 years, I made the decision last year not to return this year. Prices have skyrocketed, and overtourism has made the experience overwhelming. What should have been a holiday ended up feeling more like a stressful ordeal." ‌ Whilst a fourth TikTok user suggested: "I believe the fully booked islands are different ones. People are tired of Santorini and Mykonos: they're not authentic, they're overcrowded, and they offer a very touristy experience. Try other islands like Milos, Paros, Amorgos - those are packed. "Moreover, I think hotel availability is linked to the fact that they have overbuilt: there are hospitality structures everywhere, and they outnumber the homes of people who live on the island year-round. The locals now even rent out their garages." Another holidaymaker has reported that the situation in nearby Crete is similarly dire, meanwhile. They commented: "Here in Crete and the locals saying it's the worst season since Covid - cost of living in Europe - flights have gone up massively so people cancelling or if they come are being frugal and not spending money. ‌ "It's a shame for the locals who are the most friendly, warm, hospitable and genuine people I have ever come across." As the British school summer holidays kick off next week, temperatures in several beloved holiday destinations are expected to skyrocket, with some areas bracing for extreme highs of 44C. Weather maps from WXCharts have turned volcanic red, signalling intense heat, while Greece is peppered with patches of deathly white and grey. The forecasts for Monday, July 21, show relentless heat with temperatures seldom dipping below 36C on the Greek and Italian mainland, and soaring into the 40Cs on Sicily. Near the scenic Greek city of Larissa, tourists hoping to explore its ancient ruins may find themselves thwarted by the scorching 44C heat predicted for 3pm on Monday.
