5 Vacations That Are Nothing Like Disney (That You Might Actually Find More Worth Your Money)
According to Diana Peng, traveler and blogger at Just Wanderlust, a mid-range four-day, three-night Disney trip (sans airfare) for a family of four is pushing $4,000. And you may find more enjoyable destinations offering higher value for that kind of money.

Here are five vacations to consider if you're tired of Disney.
Who needs Disney when you can head to Washington, D.C.? It's educational, has something for all ages, and, according to Cynthia Matthews von Berg of Sharing the Wander, offers mostly free attractions.
Plus, in the summer, there's a nice mix of air-conditioned spaces and outdoor activities for when you either need a break from the heat or wish to have a picnic under the cherry blossoms. Younger kids will love the Air & Space Museum or Wegmans Wonderplace in the Natural Museum of American History; older kids will love the Spy Museum; all ages will enjoy a tour of the White House or Capitol Building, or a night tour of the National Mall when all the monuments are lit up.
Von Berg recommended a three-to-four-day trip, and said hotels run approximately $200 to $250 per night to sleep a family of four. For food, budget roughly $50 per day per person. On the high end, that's already less than half the price of Disney!

Vukan Simic, founder and CEO at FishingBooker, described the Carlsbad Caves as akin to stepping into a subterranean wonderland. Here's why: Hidden beneath the surface of the Chihuahuan Desert are more than 119 caves that formed when sulfuric acid dissolved limestone, leaving behind stalactites that cling to the roof.
'The natural path of entry is a discovery because children observe formations with imaginative names like Whale's Mouth and Iceberg Rock,' stated Simic. And there's also a sunset bat flight tour which 'produces a natural spectacle more memorable than a fireworks display.'
The Carlsbad Caverns National Park charges a $15 entrance fee for adults; kids under 15 years of age get in free. While prices for accommodations can vary depending on season and availability, Simic estimated $100 to $200 per night could typically sleep an entire family.
A meaningful alternative to a commercialized theme park, Costa Rica is the ultimate 'anti-Disney,' according to Casey Halloran, CEO and co-founder at Costa Rican Vacations. Offering an off-the-grid experience, families can view sloths in treetops, learn about medicinal plants on a jungle hike and even encounter whales on a catamaran cruise.
'Cultural immersion goes beyond staged shows,' stated Halloran. 'Visitors grind cacao with indigenous families, paint traditional ox carts in rural mountain towns and learn to make tortillas on a working farm.'
Forget Magic Kingdom — Halloran claims Costa Rica offers a natural magic you won't forget. He said the price of a seven-night vacation for a family of four (including lodging, on-site transport and tours — but not airfare) runs roughly between $3,500 and $5,500 depending on season, number of destinations and type of lodging.
Easy-going and vibrant with delicious cuisine to boot, Peng described Oaxaca as the heartbeat of Mexico. And it doesn't hurt that the dollar goes a lot farther there, too.
'We found a whole plaza dedicated to ice cream, a cat café, chocolate making classes, free museums, fun parades every week and even an old railroad stop turned into a kids' discovery museum,' stated Peng. And if parents need alone time, they can venture just outside the city to see the ancient ruins of the Zapotec, tequila factories or a stunning, petrified waterfall known as Hierve El Agua.
Excluding airfare, Peng estimated a family of four could visit Costa Rica for four days at a cost of roughly $1,100. This includes four nights in a two-bedroom villa in June ($550), meals ($320), transportation ($50) and additional entertainment and attractions.
Those looking for the opposite of a theme park might consider visiting Sintra, Portugal, advised Daniel Ponce, founder of Yes, You Deserve!
A resort town in the foothills of the Sintra Mountains and a mere 40-minute drive from Lisbon, Sintra is tranquil, culturally-rich and fairly cost-efficient. It was also the first center of European romantic architecture in the 1800's when the cooler climate enticed Portuguese nobility to construct their summer residences there. Full of real-life castles, opulent palaces, gardens, forest trails and wells, both kids and adults can enjoy immersing themselves in a combination of nature and history.
With airfare excluded, Ponce estimated that a family of four can visit Sintra for four nights and five days for roughly $1,600 (including lodging, food, full-day tours and admission to monuments).

What to know about credit card travel insurance as an Air Canada strike looms
After carefully planning a summer vacation, the last thing on your mind should be finding alternate transportation. But some travellers could be left scrambling as the clock ticks down to a possible work stoppage at Air Canada. The airline says it will gradually suspend its flights starting Thursday after the union representing the airline's 10,000 flight attendants and the airline itself issued 72-hour strike and lockout notices, respectively. They are set to take effect around 1 a.m. ET on Saturday. It can be challenging for customers who are stuck in the crossfire, dealing with delays and cancellations. But travellers may be in luck if they booked their tickets with a credit card that has built-in travel insurance — with one caveat. "You have to make sure that when you're booking it, it isn't past the date where many of (the credit card companies) would view it as a known event," said Will McAleer, executive director of the Travel Health Insurance Association. That means as long as the tickets were booked before a potential labour dispute became apparent, the credit card travel insurance would cover it under their trip cancellation policy, McAleer explained. If the ticket was booked via credit card after the strike became foreseeable, the disruption-related costs wouldn't be covered, he added. But it's important to read the fine print of your credit card's travel insurance policy, said Natasha Macmillan, senior business director of everyday banking at Macmillan said consumers need to double-check if labour dispute-related cancellations or delays are covered. Often, the travel policy would specify exclusions such as delays caused by government actions, a pandemic or labour disruption. She said labour dispute coverage can also vary depending on the card type and card provider. For example, some high-end credit cards may cover disruptions from labour strikes even when the tickets were booked after it became a foreseeable event. Macmillan said travellers should also understand their coverage limits and payout rules. "There tend to be very specific requirements," she said. For example, some credit card travel insurance may cover up to $5,000 for a trip cancellation, while other cards may have a lower limit. Besides the maximum coverage, McAleer said travellers need to determine if the policy is sufficient for the trip — is it less than or more than what you've paid per traveller. Consumers also need to make sure they meet the terms and conditions of the credit card policy, which could include paying for a large portion of the trip through the credit card, he added. McAleer said if there's a trip interruption when a traveller is already in transit, the airlines usually provide some services, such as meals and hotel stays. During labour disruptions, Steven Harris, a licensed insurance broker and expert, said while passengers are generally entitled to reimbursement for accommodations, meals and rebooking, airlines are not obligated to compensate for additional costs such as prepaid hotel bookings unless they are specifically covered by the airline's policy or a travel insurance policy. Air Canada has said customers affected by flight cancellations will be eligible for a full refund. It has also made arrangements with other carriers to provide alternative options, but warns it could take time to secure capacity given other airlines are already full due to the summer travel peak. Experts say credit card insurance policies come down to understanding the coverage and doing your homework ahead of time. "We all know there's a reasonable chance this could happen," he said. "If I was travelling on those days and likely going to be impacted over that time, I would make that call." McAleer said it's important to double-check with the credit card administrator to see if the policy covers labour strikes. "I'd want to call my credit card issuer and see what my protection was likely going to do," he said. "Prepare yourself for any surprise." Andrew Cuomo tries out a new persona: Underdog candidate
Cuomo's scaled down team — a coterie of longtime aides remain while consultants have left ahead of the general election — is opening up access to him with reporters after running a press-allergic primary campaign. They are eager to show Cuomo's interactions with New Yorkers, all documented in short videos posted online , a reverse from his paltry retail efforts during the primary. The former governor's new-look campaign, which reported more than $1 million in cash on hand, still has financial resources to last until November. But many of his wealthy backers, like ex-Mayor Michael Bloomberg, who contributed to a Cuomo-allied super PAC, have been publicly silent about his general election effort. The former governor must also contend with the presence of Mayor Eric Adams in the field. Adams, a fellow moderate, shares an overlapping base of support, including Black and Jewish voters. Cuomo and the mayor have tried in vain to convince the other to drop out and unite the field against Mamdani. Cuomo is not running with the same institutional support he's enjoyed for much of his political career, which seemingly ground to a halt in 2021 after a state attorney general report found he sexually harassed 11 women; he's denied any wrongdoing. Despite resigning in disgrace, Cuomo quickly raked in cash and endorsements from the city's political and business elite when he launched his primary run in March, as his advisers insisted he was the all-but-inevitable next mayor of the nation's largest city. Cuomo's team privately believed Mamdani's anti-Israel views, hard-left policies like government-run grocery stores and inexperience would make him an easy primary opponent to dispatch. It didn't work out. The former governor got pummeled by Mamdani, whose focus on affordability vaulted his once afterthought of a candidacy ahead of better known and more experienced candidates. Cuomo retreated in July to make his pitch to the Hamptons elite and directly to voters that he deserved another shot in the general election. Significant endorsements of Cuomo's retooled campaign, however, have not materialized. 'A huge part of his appeal was his sense of inevitability,' said Democratic strategist Alyssa Cass, who advised former Comptroller Scott Stringer's mayoral campaign. 'Once Superman's lost his cape, it's hard to get it back. In politics, no one likes a loser.' Mamdani's campaign has made changes of its own since his upset victory. He's met with wealthy business leaders to assure them his plans to sharply raise taxes on the rich to pay for his proposals like free buses won't damage the city's economy.
