Guwahati/Silchar: A fake doctor, who performed atleast 50 C-section and gynaecological surgeries over a decade at two private hospitals in
Silchar
, has finally landed in police net after being caught in the act.
The accused, Pulok Malakar, was produced before a local court on Monday, which remanded him in five-day police custody. He was arrested a day earlier.
Malakar, claimed to possess an MBBS degree and a CDM Pune qualification. CDM Pune refers to a certificate in disaster management course offered through distance and open learning.
Malakar is the 50th fake doctor caught in the state under an initiative of one Dr Abhijit Neog, who is now the vigilance officer of the anti-quackery cell under the Assam Council of Medical Registration.
While fake doctors have been caught from various parts of the state over the years, including the capital Guwahati, the arrest of Malakar was the first case where a fake doctor was apprehended for conducting major surgeries.
The quack was nabbed while performing a caesarean section at a private hospital in Silchar. The accused is from Badrpurghat in Sribhumi district and reportedly masqueraded as a qualified medical practitioner for an extended period at the hospital.

He allegedly conducted surgeries and offered various treatments at the autonomous charitable hospital from where he was arrested.
"From a reliable source, our cell got the information that he was performing a surgery at the hospital," Dr Neog told TOI on Monday.
Prior to the arrest, a zero FIR was lodged by Dr Neog on July 30 at the CID police station in Guwahati. He said prior to lodging the FIR, the anti-quackery cell, after investigation, found that Malakar did not have any medical qualification.
"He does not have a valid registration number as a doctor. CDM is a six-month correspondence course offered by IGNOU and has nothing to do with medical science," Dr Neog added.
Police sources revealed that Malakar submitted certificates claiming to have medical qualifications from the Odisha Council of Medical Registration and Utkal University. However, preliminary verification suggests that the documents were dubious and not legally tenable.
Officials said the conditions of the patients operated on by Malakar will be examined following the seizure of hospital records. Sources said while tea gardens, semi-urban, and rural areas are vulnerable to the menace of fake doctors, the recent arrest of several quacks from Guwahati raised concern among the patients in the state capital as well.
It may be noted that the hospital from where Malakar was nabbed on Sunday evening was founded in 1931, one of the oldest in Silchar. This hospital has a long-standing reputation for serving the poor and underprivileged in the northeast, especially women and children. The exposure of such a serious lapse has dented the hospital's credibility and raised questions about oversight and verification protocols, officials said.

2 chain-snatching incidents in a day, woman held in one case

Jaipur: Chain snatchers in the city are growing audacious, with two women targeted in broad daylight—one in an upscale locality and the other at Sindhi Camp bus stand—on the same day. In the first incident, a woman fell victim to chain snatching on a moving bus. According to DCP (west) Hanuman Prasad Meena, Diksha Prajapati reported that she was boarding a bus from Sindhi Camp to Bayana around 3.30pm Tuesday when a woman passenger forcibly snatched the gold chain from her neck. When Diksha resisted, the woman threatened her with a weapon resembling a screwdriver and fled. In another incident, Sushila Devi (65), a resident of Shanti Nagar in Durgapura, was attacked near her home while returning from a Jain temple. The incident took place around 7.45pm on a busy stretch in one of the city's upscale localities. Two men on a motorcycle approached her just 200 metres from her house. The pillion rider flung chilli powder at her face before pushing her to the ground and snatching her gold chain. Fortunately, Sushila Devi's glasses, worn due to an eye operation, shielded her eyes from serious harm. Hearing her cries, a man and a woman nearby rushed to help and attempted to chase the assailants, but the duo managed to flee. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 25 of the Best Cities to Live In Learn More Undo Additional DCP (west) Alok Singhal said a team led by Sindhi Camp SHO Shyam Sunder Sharma scanned CCTV footage and used local intelligence to track down and arrest the woman chain snatcher, Madhu (35), from Chitokdi village in Bharatpur's Sewar area. Cyber fraud racket worth Rs 5cr busted in city, 4 held

Jaipur: The police Wednesday busted a cyber fraud racket worth Rs 5 crore operating in the city and arrested four members of the gang linked to an international network. DCP (South) Rajashi Raj Varma told TOI that the gang supplied bank accounts to online scammers, with funds routed all the way to China. "Acting on a tip-off, a police team from Shyam Nagar police station raided a flat near Kamla Nehru Bridge and seized Rs 7.7 lakh, 28 ATM cards, 23 chequebooks, 10 mobile SIMs, and forged rental agreements used to legitimise fake firms," he said. Varma said that key accused, Sunil Jakhar, allegedly used the front of a shell company to launder money from online scams. Jakhar converted the fraud money into cryptocurrency (USDT) and relayed it to Chinese handlers. "The gang leased out bank accounts across Rajasthan, Maharashtra, Bihar, and Jharkhand. Villagers were lured with Rs 10,000–30,000 a month to rent out accounts, hand over signed cheques, ATM cards, and SIMs linked to the accounts. The gang withdrew the laundered cash and sent crypto codes to China in return for commissions," Varma said. The arrested accused were identified as Sadasukh Vishnoi, Anku Chandolia, Kamal Kumawat, and Kamlesh Verma. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Woman sells ring given by ex, then jeweler tells her 'This can't be true' Daily Sport X Undo All four of them were arrested for providing their bank accounts for the fraud network. The police said that the racket is linked to scam call centres operating from China that lure Indians via WhatsApp and Telegram groups posing as stock or real estate investment schemes. Victims are tricked into transferring money to mule accounts operated by this gang. "So far, 19 cyber fraud complaints have been traced to accounts seized in this bust," said Varma, adding that the crackdown came after Rajasthan police ordered an aggressive campaign against cybercrime. Police believe more arrests are likely as they trace the gang's crypto trail and China connections. The gang is also suspected of frequently changing flats every one to two months to avoid detection.
