European Group 1 winner Sammarco set for Australian debut with Ciaron Maher at Sandown

News.com.au22-05-2025
European stayer Sammarco, a multiple Group 1 winner in Germany, is set to become a Melbourne winter fixture with potential spring ambitions.
The 2022 German Derby winner, now trained by Ciaron Maher, banked more than $1m prizemoney through 18 starts in Europe, including solid stakes performances in France and Italy.
Sammarco could in time follow in the hoofsteps of Maher stablemates past and present, including Berkshire Breeze, Floating Artist, Grand Promenade and Persan to parlay winter into spring.
'Ciaron has done it plenty of times with those types of horses going back three, four, five years,' assistant trainer Jack Turnbull said.
'He's an interesting horse, (99 rating) is reasonable, it's going to be interesting how that German form ties in.
'We've had some of our riders on him and Ethan (Brown) had a sit on him recently and said he gave him a feel, that's what you want to hear.
'He's definitely one of those staying horses that could do anything, especially this time of year … you know he's got the stamina, he's just got to get the first half right.'

The opposition could be too slick on Saturday for Sammarco in the 1800m Benchmark 100 but the six-year-old is expected to be 'doing his best work late'.
'He'll want the run naturally (first-up) but it's just the right race to kick him off in,' Turnbull said.
'Our plan is to pick through winter, he'll probably go through the Banjo Paterson Series and then all being well you're at the doorstep of spring (race) fit.
'He will be regulation four to five weeks every run, emulating that European style … he's not young, he's seasoned and we can't reinvent the wheel running every two weeks.'
Sammarco arrived in Australia last year but needed the time to settle into conditions.
'We moved him from Ballarat from Cranbourne, had him barefoot for a long time,' Turnbull said.
'He's going quite well, last time (initial preparation) we thought he was going OK but once we got to the stage of racing him we thought we better just put him away.'
Sammarco is $17 on Saturday.
Turnbull will also saddle Sayedaty Sadaty, an $8.50 chance, for Maher in the race.
Sayedaty Sadaty was gelded after racing too fiercely in the Caulfield Cup last year, finished third last.
He resumed in a 1600m at Flemington in March but 'knocked a joint' in the run and dropped out.
'We think he will get to being like a Future History, Duke De Sessa-style of horse, he will be rolling forward when he's fit between 10 and 12 furlongs (2000m-2200m), a very nice horse,' Turnbull said.
'Again 1800m is bottom of his trip but this horse does have a bit of speed, where he lands is going to be interesting (from barrier one) because I don't think we want to drag him out of the race.'

Premier League has no say on delay over Man City charges, says chief exec

Premier League chief executive Richard Masters said his "frustration" at waiting for a verdict in a series of financial charges against Manchester City is irrelevant as the case is in the hands of an independent hearing. The Premier League issued more than 100 charges against City in February 2023 related to alleged breaches of its financial rules and with allegedly failing to co-operate with the subsequent investigation. The case was heard by a commission between September and December last year but no decision has been published. The issue continues to hang over the league as the 2025/26 season gets underway this weekend, but Masters said his organisation has no control over when a verdict will be reached. "Once the allegations, the charge has been put forward, they go before an independent panel, which is independently selected, and they are then in charge of the process and its timings," Masters told Sky Sports News. "They hear the case, they decide the outcome, and we have no influence over that, over it or its timing. "And that's right, if you think from an independence point of view, that there is independent people making those decisions, and we just have to be waiting. "My frustration is irrelevant, really. I mean, I just have to wait, and legal processes rarely take less time than you anticipated, but we have to be patient." City deny any wrongdoing and have said they have a "comprehensive body of irrefutable evidence" to clear their name. But if they are found guilty, they could face a range of punishments, including a severe points penalty, or even be kicked out of the Premier League. City were charged with failing to report accurate financial information for nine seasons stretching from 2009/10 to 2017/18, as well as failing to provide full details of former manager Roberto Mancini's pay between 2009/10 and 2012/13. They are also charged with failing to provide full details of remuneration in contracts with players between 2010/11 and 2015/16, and with failing to co-operate with the investigation over a period from 2018 to 2023. Since an Abu Dhabi-backed takeover in 2008, City's fortunes have been transformed on the field from also-rans to the dominant force in English football. Eight of their 10 top-flight league titles have come since 2012 and they also won the Champions League for the first time in 2023.

Homesick college punter Archie Wilson breaks down in sad scenes

Melbourne teenager Archie Wilson has won over an entire US state after breaking down during a pre-season press conference. The 18-year-old made the move to Nebraska as he gets set to kick off a college football career as a punter. Towards the end of his media appearance, the youngster was asked how it felt to be so far away from his family. The question hit the teen as the emotion spilt out in sad scenes. 'That part's hard. I mean … I'm sorry,' Wilson said as the tears began to flow. 'I love them a lot. I got two little brothers, and my mum and dad. That's the tough part about being here. I love them a lot and I miss them.' Moving halfway across the world to chase his dream wasn't easy, but he was already looking forward to his family coming over later this month. 'They know this is what's best for me,' he said. 'It's good I can still talk to them plenty over the phone. They're coming here to see the first few games, so I'm looking forward to that.' The youngster, who turns 19 tomorrow, became an instant fan favourite as the heartbreaking footage quickly spread across social media. Nebraska natives were quick to wrap their arms around the teen with love for their new recruit coming in thick and fast. Producer Michael Snow wrote on X: 'I will go to war for Archie.' Liam Jones wrote: 'Can't wait to watch this man play. Husker nation has his back.' Kara Lynnie added: 'Love this kid. Hang in there buddy. It'll be worth it the first time you do the tunnel walk. The state of Nebraska's got you!' Darin Geiger wrote: 'You're 'home' here Archie. And may you always feel that.' Larsen Greg posted: 'You are in our family now too brother. Nebraska forever.' Special teams co-ordinator Mike Elker heaped praise on the Aussie's talent following a Huskers' practice session. 'Man, that guy is special. I mean, he truly is,' Ekeler said. 'He's 18 years old, leaves home for the first time, goes to a different country, and leaves his family which he's extremely close to. 'What coach (Matt Rhule) said about him is accurate. That kid knows every one of his teammates, and his teammates love him because of the energy he brings in the building, not just because of what he can do with the football.' The Huskers' 2025 season kicks off against the Cincinnati Bearcats on August 28.

Cadillac set to name their first-ever F1 driver as they turn to unemployed six-time Grand Prix winner, 35, to lead team

Sergio Perez is edging closer to signing a deal with new F1 side Cadillac. The General Motors-backed team will make its debut on the grid in 2026 and are yet to announce their line up. Mexican driver Perez has not been in the paddock this season after he was axed by Red Bull last December. Fox Sports, available on Kayo Sports, is the only place to watch every practice, qualifying session and race in the 2025 FIA Formula One World Championship™ LIVE in 4K. New to Kayo? Join now and get your first month for just $1. But talks are ramping up with Cadillac and a deal could be announced in the coming weeks. Perez's Red Bull exit came after a run of woeful results where he failed to make a podium in his final 19 races. In April, Perez made it clear he had spoken to a handful of teams and said: 'We are talking to a few parties out there. 'Once I know all my options, I will make a decision. What is very clear to me is that I'm only coming back if the project makes sense, and it's something I can enjoy.' Perez is a hot prospect given he is a six-time race winner and brings strong commercial appeal in Mexico. The 35-year-old is also backed by Mexican billionaire Carlos Slim. Perez has reportedly held talks with Alpine with Franco Colapinto struggling to hit the ground running. Mercedes reserve driver Valtteri Bottas is said to be a favourite for the other Cadillac seat.
