BHISHM medical cubes deployed in J&K hospitals under Aarogya Maitri project
The development comes on the heels of Union Health Minister J P Nadda on Friday reviewing health infrastructure preparedness across hospitals in the country amid the ongoing Operation Sindoor and the ongoing India-Pakistan military conflict, official sources said.
These BHISHM cubes are also being stationed in other Institutes of National Importance (INIs) across India, including AIIMS in Rishikesh, Bilaspur and Delhi, they said.
"We are also providing operational training to the respective medical institutes where BHISHM cubes have been deployed. So far two BHISHM cubes have been deployed at AIIMS, Jammu and more are being diverted to this centre.
"Besides, around 35 other BHISHM cubes so far have been deployed across other Institutes of National Importance (INIs) across India," said Air Vice Marshal Dr Tanmoy Roy, HLL Lifecare.
Dr Roy said HLL Life Care Ltd under the Union Health Ministry is the nodal agency for the procurement and deployment of Aarogya Maitri Cube.
BHISHM cubes are portable and rapidly deployable modular medical facilities to provide emergency lifesaving clinical care in the event of disaster or public health emergencies.
Each cube is equipped with medicines and surgical equipment for basic operations, and it has the capacity to handle around 200 diverse emergency cases.
The cube comprises 72 easily transportable components, designed for versatile delivery methods including hand-carry, bicycle or even drone transport.
The aid cube is equipped with several innovative tools designed to enhance disaster response and medical support during emergencies. It integrates Artificial Intelligence (AI) and data analytics to facilitate effective coordination, real-time monitoring and efficient management of medical services in the field.
Being robust, waterproof and lightweight, the cubes are also built to withstand harsh conditions. Their flexible configuration allows deployment in diverse emergency scenarios. The system can be quickly dispatched via airdrop or ground transportation, ensuring swift response to crises anywhere.
In the wake of Operation Sindoor, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday chaired a high-level meeting with secretaries of various ministries and called for continued alertness and clear communication, while reaffirming the government's commitment to national security and operational preparedness.
The Indian armed forces are on high alert in the wake of the current hostilities between New Delhi and Islamabad following the Pahalgam terrorist attack of April 22 and India's strike on terror targets in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) in retaliation.
Pakistani forces are targetting border areas on the Indian side, killing at least 13 people and injuring others.

Pakistani Hindu doctor, stateless for four years, gets Indian citizenship
A doctor from Pakistan, 'stateless' for the past four years, has been registered as an Indian citizen, the Gujarat High Court was informed on Thursday (August 7, 2025). Nanikraz Khanoomal Mukhi (53), who had a sonography clinic in Pakistan's Hyderabad, chose to move to India in 2009 for his children's education and to escape possible religious persecution. Dr. Mukhi was registered as an Indian on August 5 under Section 5 (1) (A) of the Citizenship Act, 1955 by the office of District Magistrate, Ahmedabad. The Section prescribes citizenship to a person of Indian origin who is ordinarily resident in India for seven years before making an application for registration and is not an illegal migrant. The Hindu reported about Dr. Mukhi's case on July 19. Dr. Mukhi had been running from pillar to post to get registered as an Indian since 2021, when he renounced his Pakistani passport after receiving a letter from the Ahmedabad Collector's office that the application has been processed and he would receive the citizenship soon. He applied for citizenship in 2016. Clinic sealed As his application remained stuck in red tape, his clinic in Ahmedabad was sealed by the health officials as he was not an Indian citizen. Dr. Mukhi moved the Gujarat High Court against the Union of India and the State of Gujarat on April 30. After the Union government's counsel informed the court on Thursday that Dr. Mukhi has been granted citizenship, he decided to withdraw the petition. 'As an Indian I will get legal rights and the right to practice as a medical doctor now. I can apply for a voter card and a passport. I did not have any rights for the past four years. I had no nationality so far. It is a huge relief,' Dr. Mukhi told The Hindu. He added that he would apply for a medical licence with the Gujarat Medical Council soon. Dr. Mukhi's wife, who had applied for citizenship with him, has been granted the naturalisation certificate. His three children acquired citizenship after they registered under the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), 2019, which became effective on March 11, 2024. Citizenship is a subject under the Union List and is decided by the Ministry of Home Affairs. The MHA has delegated powers to district magistrates/collectors of 31 districts in nine States, including Gujarat, to grant citizenship to legal migrants (who entered on passport/visa) from the Hindu, Sikh, Buddhist, Jain, Parsi and Christian communities from Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan under Section 5 (by registration) and Section 6 (naturalisation) of the Citizenship Act, 1955.

Acko ramps up health insurance play to expand healthcare reach
BENGALURU : Nearly a year after acquiring Better Capital-backed chronic-care startup OneCare, insurtech Acko Technology and Services Pvt. Ltd is doubling down on health insurance offerings, expanding partnerships with hospitals and clinics to tap into the growing opportunity in the space, a top executive told Mint. The Bengaluru-based unicorn acquired the digital chronic-care management company in an all-cash deal in 2024 to enter the health insurance segment. The firm, which began with auto insurance in 2016, is now working on integrating the entire process of buying health insurance—from picking a lab for medical testing to interacting with a hospital for claims. 'The problem in the health insurance industry today is that the burden of the entire process is on the customer. If there's a breakdown in the system, they're on their own. We're working towards integrating the entire system on our app and actually hand-holding customers to pick the best testing labs and hospitals," Animesh Das, managing director and chief executive of Acko General Insurance, told Mint in an interview. Acko aims to capitalize on the booming Indian healthcare sector, which is valued at over $372 billion and is growing at a compound annual growth rate of 21% since 2014, according to estimates by government think tank Niti Aayog. With health premiums already accounting for more than half of Acko's overall premium income, the firm has invested substantially to grow the segment over the last year, Das said. Acko has secured nearly $450 million in funding from investors, including Multiples PE, Accel, Elevation Capital, and General Atlantic. It was last valued at $1.1 billion in October 2021. Last week, cricketer M.S. Dhoni announced his investment in the firm and hopped on board as its brand ambassador. In the healthcare sector, Acko is in direct competition with players such as PharmEasy, HealthQuad-backed HealthifyMe, and HealthPlix that provide healthcare services such as diagnostic tests and doctor consultations. Motor insurance slowdown While Acko is yet to officially file its 2024-25 financials with the Registrar of Companies (RoC), it witnessed 'measured growth" during the year. 'It was a year of learning to know what levers will drive growth for us. Doubling down on health is a product of that learning," Das said. 'Healthcare services are a long-term game for us." The integration of its various insurance services will also result in customers engaging with the platform more regularly, which otherwise tends to be an annual activity. In the fiscal year ended March 2024, Acko's revenue climbed to ₹2,106 crore from ₹1,758 crore in the year prior, filings available with the RoC showed. Its losses narrowed marginally to ₹670 crore from ₹738 crore. Acko is among venture capital firm Elevation Capital's portfolio companies looking to get publicly listed soon. Mint reported on 6 August that the VC firm plans to take at least nine portfolio companies public over the next 12-24 months, as it gears up to monetize its portfolio amid improving public market conditions for tech and consumer startups in the country. Das declined to comment on the IPO timeline. Acko is evolving its model to keep up with a slowdown in the industry. The firm has struck a partnership with American carmaker Tesla Inc. as the insurance partner in India. 'Tesla's branding of a new-age automaker designed for young and aspirational buyers ties in well with the shift in consumer cohorts in our insurance products," Das said. A July Nuvama report said the insurance industry in India is slowing primarily due to moderation in auto sales and a drop in corporate renewal policies. Motor insurance growth has slowed down due to weak retail motor sales. The gross direct premium income (GDPI) in the motor segment rose 6.7% in June 2025, compared to 8.2% in the year-ago period.
