Mike Breen shares emotional Lisa Salters message during ESPN reporter's NBA Finals absence

New York Post3 hours ago

Mike Breen shared a heartfelt message Sunday to his ESPN colleague, top sideline reporter Lisa Salters, who missed Game 2 of the NBA Finals between the Thunder and Pacers to tend to her ailing mother.
Moments after sideline reporter Jorge Sedano provided commentary on the second half of the game, with Oklahoma City leading 59-41 in the third, Breen detailed why Sedano was filling in for Salters, whom he described as 'the teammate everyone in our business should strive to have.'
'Jorge is with us today, but we're thinking of our dear friend and colleague, Lisa Salters,' began Breen, who is part of ESPN's top NBA booth that includes Doris Burke and Richard Jefferson. 'Lisa's mom has been dealing with some serious health issues for a while now, so we want to send our love to Lisa and her mom. Although we've never met her mom, we owe her a debt of gratitude for giving us the gift of Lisa Salters, who is the teammate everyone in our business should strive to have.'

Prior to tipoff Sunday, reports emerged that Salters, 59, would miss Game 2 of the finals in Oklahoma City due to a personal matter.
Fever head coach Stephanie White, who is Salters' partner, skipped Indiana's game on Saturday in Chicago amid a 'family emergency,' according to the Indy Star.

Assistant coach Austin Kelly took over and guided the Fever to a 79-52 victory over the Sky, something Indiana forward DeWanna Bonner hoped her teammates would fight for on behalf of White.
'I really want to win for Steph, she's going through a tough time with her family right now,' Bonner told the Indy Star. 'We want to rally together and get this one for her, but it's also Austin's first time at the helm, so it's double-duty right now.'

The Fever visit the Atlanta Dream on Tuesday, while Games 3 and 4 of the NBA Finals shift to Indiana starting Wednesday.
Salters, also a sideline correspondent on ESPN's 'Monday Night Football,' covered the Pacers' 111-110 Game 1 rally on Thursday in Oklahoma City.
The Thunder stormed back in Game 2, 123-107, to even the best-of-seven series at 1-1.

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander passes Sixers legend in NBA Finals debut

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander passes Sixers legend in NBA Finals debut Oklahoma City Thunder guard Shai Gilgeous-Alexander has been on one helluva run in 2024-25. The MVP winner averaged 32.7 points, 6.4 assists, and 5.0 rebounds while leading the Thunder to a 68-14 record in the regular season and he has followed that up with averages of 30.4 points, 6.8 assists, and 5.6 rebounds in the playoffs as he has led OKC to the finals. In his finals debut, Gilgeous-Alexander has been phenomenal as he has scored 72 points through the first two games of the series against the Indiana Pacers. He had 34 points in a 123-107 Game 2 win on Sunday to even the series at 1-1 and that is a new record for a player in his finals debut. The previous record was held by Philadelphia 76ers legend Allen Iverson in his debut back in 2001. Iverson scored 71 points in the first two games as he led the Sixers to a 1-1 start as well, Philadelphia's win came in Game 1 of that series, but Gilgeous-Alexander has one-upped him for the Thunder. The Thunder will look to take a 2-1 lead in the finals when the series shifts to Gainbridge Fieldhouse for Game 3 on Wednesday.

'Diarra would be an ambitious signing'

[Getty Images] Leeds fans will get perhaps their first glimpse of potential new signing Habib Diarra when England play his Senegal side at Wembley on Tuesday. The White's £22m bid was reported by L'Equipe over the weekend, and is the first concrete offer that has come to light since this summer's window began. Advertisement The 21-year-old Diarra is a box-to-box midfielder who is strong in-and-out of possession and he progresses the ball with trickery in transition. Despite his age, the Senegalese international has three years of Ligue 1 experience; while he captained Strasbourg last season and his four goals and five assists was the biggest contribution of his young career. United's owners, 49ers Enterprises, are known for going about their transfer business very quietly. Signings like Ethan Ampadu and Largie Ramazani happened with very few rumours before those transfers were completed. The 49ers see this strategy as crucial to securing the best deals they can for the club. Advertisement Midfield was arguably the Whites strongest area in last year's record-breaking 100 point season. Club-captain Ampadu, instant fan favourite Ao Tanaka, Illia Gruev and loanee Joe Rothwell formed a brick wall in the Leeds engine room. But United have lost Rothwell and with the Premier League being a huge step up, it is vital the team is strengthened in all areas of the pitch. Diarra would be an ambitious signing and it is a measure of what the club think of him with the size of their opening bid. Having risen through the French team's academy to captain the club into Europe, Diarra may need convincing. But the Peacocks proved with May's parade what a sleeping giant they are, and Leeds in the Premier League will be a proposition for anyone. Find more from Adonis Storr at The Roaring Peacock

Dick Vitale, ESPN agree to contract extension through 2027-28 event in his honor

ESPN announced Monday that it reached a new multi-year contract extension with Dick Vitale, keeping the legendary broadcaster with the network through the 2027–28 season. This deal will bring his tenure with ESPN to nearly 50 years. Since joining the company in its inaugural year in 1979, Vitale has called over 1,000 college basketball games and built a legacy marked by passion, energy and excellence. Advertisement His numerous honors include induction into both the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame and the Sports Broadcasting Hall of Fame. Recently, he was awarded the prestigious Dean Smith Award by the U.S. Basketball Writers Association (USBWA) and was recognized with the Winged Foot Award by The New York Athletic Club, introduced by former ESPN President George Bodenheimer. Beyond broadcasting, Vitale has been a tireless advocate in the fight against childhood cancer, with his efforts through the Dick Vitale Pediatric Cancer Research Fund helping the V Foundation award over $105 million in research grants. In celebration of his contract extension and 86th birthday, ESPN Events, in partnership with the Charlotte Sports Foundation, announced the launch of a new annual men's college basketball event honoring Vitale. The inaugural game is set for Tuesday, November 4, at the Spectrum Center in Charlotte, N.C., and will feature a matchup between the Texas Longhorns and the Duke Blue Devils. 'ESPN has been such a vital part of my life since December 5, 1979, and I was so thrilled to learn that ESPN Events will have an annual Dick Vitale Invitational,' Vitale said. '(ESPN chairman) Jimmy Pitaro and all my colleagues and friends at ESPN have been so good to me and I am so thankful for all of the prayers and love I have received from them during my cancer battles. ESPN has been family to me and has given me a life that has been even better than my dreams. To the Vitale family, ESPN is 'Awesome, baby' with a capital A!' Dick Vitale told me long ago that previous ESPN management had told him that he had a contract for as long as he worked at the company. The current group of executives has continued to hold up that promise. The addition of a tournament named after him is a nice piece of business to honour someone who helped build ESPN's place in the sport. Advertisement Whether you thought Vitale was too over-the-top or too beholden to his favourites — both of these points have merit — his passion for college basketball has always been clear. His commitment to fighting cancer has been noble. It's nice to see ESPN extend him for a couple of years. I hope he gets to go out — whenever that is — on his own terms. — Richard Deitsch, media reporter
