Government planning bill sowing division, says Bedfordshire MP
The two MPs spoke to the BBC Politics East programme from London Luton Airport, after the government gave the go-ahead for expanding the terminal earlier this year.It is a part of the region where the challenges of growth and a changing economy are big talking points.Car maker Stellantis closed the town's Vauxhall factory in March, but over towards Bedford, Universal plans to open a giant theme park and the construction of East West rail promises to pave the way for more housebuilding.
Stephenson welcomed plans for the Universal theme park and the need for new homes, but added: "We do need to take communities along with us. "We need the right types of house in the right places."He continued: "If people know the infrastructure is there as their communities expand they are going to get on board."The builders v blockers argument may well set the government back on its target to build 1.5 million homes."Hopkins responded: "We need to make sure there is a local contribution and people have their say but ultimately we need the homes and we need to build them and that will support our economic growth with investment in construction, good jobs [and] skills training."And we need to get on with it."The airport falls inside Hopkins's constituency, and she said the aviation hub would help support a growing population: "Luton airport is a part of the growth of Bedfordshire as a destination."Luton has brilliant transport links that are going to be further improved."
East West Rail's director of external affairs, Natalie Wheble, said its plan for a train line between Cambridge and Oxford - going through Bedfordshire - would provide an "efficient and sustainable" transport link for people.Rob Brighouse, director of business investment company Luton Rising, said Luton was yet to "achieve its potential" due to its location in the centre of the "Oxford-Cambridge-London triangle".
Angelina Aziz, the co-founder of an artificial intelligence company in Luton, said more investment was needed to support start-up companies and new high-tech firms in the area."A lot of our best talent in Luton tends to move to London. We need more investment," she said.
The airport plans have been controversial and opposed by the Stop Luton Airport Expansion group (SLAE).Peter White, of SLAE, has been sceptical about the number of jobs the airport says the expansion will create. He has previously told the BBC the "quality of life" of people who live near the airport will be damaged by the project.Lord John Hutton, chair of the board of London Luton Airport, said: "We've got a once in a generation opportunity to do something pretty amazing here and provide an economic lifeline for the town."The airport sustains and supports about 27,000 in the local economy. After expansion that number will be approaching 40,000."The whole focus is to get moving on this as quickly as we can to bring the economic and social benefits of expansion to Luton."
BBC Politics East will be broadcast on Sunday 13 July at 10:00 GMT on BBC One in the East of England, and will be available after broadcast on BBC iPlayer.Follow Beds, Herts and Bucks news on BBC Sounds, Facebook, Instagram and X.

Leeds United ready to sell Emile Heskey's relative in £10m deal to raise money for Rodrigo Muniz transfer
LEEDS want a bidding war for forward Mateo Joseph. The Elland Road club are after £10million for the 21-year-old Spain Under-21 striker. 3 3 3 That was proving too rich for Real Betis but fellow LaLiga side Celta Vigo are in the mix, armed with cash from the sale of Fer Lopez to Wolves. Leeds need to boost their kitty to make a new bid to land Fulham's Brazilian hitman Rodrigo Muniz, 24. Joseph's father is a cousin of former England striker Emile Heskey, but despite his dad's English family, Joseph was born in Spain. The 21-year-old grew up in Santander, where he joined the academy of LaLiga 2 outfit Real Racing Club. After impressing in their youth set-up, Joseph left home at just 13 to move to the city of Barcelona and join the academy at Espanyol. The centre-forward spent six years with the Catalan club before leaving Spain for Leeds United when his deal with Espanyol expired in 2022. Since joining Leeds, the 21-year-old has been a mainstay in the team. Last season, he played 39 Championship games, scoring three goals as Leeds secured promotion back to the Premier League. But promotion means they must now invest heavily and are looking to cash in on the Spain Under-21 striker to fund other deals. BEST ONLINE CASINOS - TOP SITES IN THE UK They have been strongly linked with Fulham's Brazilian hitman, Muniz, and even though the player is open to a move, they must meet Fulham's £50million asking price. In the last two seasons, all six teams promoted from the Championship faced relegation, and Leeds manager Daniel Farke is determined to build a team that avoids the same fate. They have already agreed a deal for £17.4m with Hoffenheim midfielder Anton Stach.

Transfer news LIVE: Rashford EXIT updates, Liverpool to SUBMIT bid for Ekitike, Tottenham and Newcastle ‘chase Wissa'
Chelsea far from done The Blues have made Aston Villa star Morgan Rogers their top target for the remainder of the transfer window. Villa boss Unai Emery is also keen on being reunited with Blues striker Nicolas Jackson after working with him at Villarreal. New world champions Chelsea have already spent more than £130million on adding Joao Pedro, Liam Delap and Jamie Gittens to their array of forward options. But they are ready to push the boat out to bring in England star Rogers, who is valued at £80m or more. A partial-swap deal involving Jackson is NOT on the cards because financial rules make separate transfers more attractive. Villa would love to find a way to stay within Premier League Profit and Sustainability Rules and Uefa regulations without selling Rogers at all. But if the Midlanders are unable to bring in decent fees for other bankable stars like Ollie Watkins, Emi Martinez and Leon Bailey, they could be forced to cash in on their prime asset.

Liverpool fend off Premier League rival in Hugo Ekitike transfer
Liverpool are nearing a deal to sign striker Hugo Ekitike from Eintracht Frankfurt, with personal terms already agreed with the player. Reports of a €90 million (£78 million) bid being accepted are inaccurate, as the two clubs are still negotiating the transfer fee and its structure. Ekitike, 23, impressed in the Bundesliga, scoring 15 goals in 31 games for Frankfurt after joining permanently last summer. Newcastle United previously had a £70 million offer for the France Under-21 international rejected and have since dropped out of the race. The potential arrival of Ekitike could prompt the departures of Darwin Nunez and Federico Chiesa as Liverpool aim to balance their finances.
