MIDA unveils programmes to strengthen semiconductor sector
According to MIDA, the two strategic programmes, namely the Supply Chain Programme and Handshake Session, emerged as cornerstone events, including participation from industry giants such as Micron Technology Inc., ASML Holding NV and Ferrotec Holdings Corporation.
It said the sessions created direct pathways for Malaysian suppliers to integrate into global supply chains, targeting high-value semiconductor activities -- positioning Malaysia as a key player in the international market.
Last year, Malaysia secured RM120.5 billion of manufacturing investments, with RM55.8 billion dedicated to the electrical and electronics (E&E) sector, creating 88,000 new high-skilled jobs that signal robust growth in the technology sector.
MIDA chief executive officer Datuk Sikh Shamsul Ibrahim Sikh Abdul Majid said the success in attracting investments demonstrates global confidence in Malaysia's semiconductor ecosystem.
'This isn't just about numbers – it's about building a sustainable future. Our National Semiconductor Strategy (NSS) is transforming Malaysia into a comprehensive semiconductor hub, from design and manufacturing to testing and packaging.
'We're seeing interest from global players who recognise our unique value proposition, a skilled workforce, robust infrastructure, and unwavering government support,' he said in a statement today.
Additionally, Sikh Shamsul said MIDA's Supply Chain Programme and Handshake Session are prime examples of how Malaysia facilitate meaningful connections and drives industry growth.
At the Supply Change Programme, Malaysian participants are offered valuable knowledge about global standards and integration opportunities, while the Handshake Session facilitates direct discussions between international leaders and local stakeholders.
The engagement with industry leaders at SEMICON SEA 2025 is part of the national push under the NSS, which is the strategic roadmap to advance critical segments of the semiconductor value chain, including chip design, wafer fabrication, advanced packaging and speciality chemicals.
The NSS reflects Malaysia's ambition to transition from a traditional manufacturing base into a regional hub for innovation, co-creation, and semiconductor excellence.
SEMICON SEA 2025 runs from May 20 to 22, 2025, at the Sands Expo and Convention Centre, Singapore, under the theme 'Stronger Together – Collaborating to Navigate Uncertainties and Fostering Resilience'.

The press conference also highlighted Riuh X ASEAN Marketplace which will be held on Oct 22 to 25 at Stadium Merdeka, Kuala Lumpur (KL) which will showcase over 200 retail brands, food vendors, stage performance from local artists and interactive workshops. The event will include the FrequenSEA Music Conference featuring musicians, producers and industry leaders from across ASEAN countries. In addition, the Riuh Gallery pop-up series will be launched on Oct 1 at selected Klang Valley locations presenting indie music, comedy, poetry and visual art performance. Ahead of the October programmes, Riuh Merdeka 2025 will be held on Aug 30 and 31 at Millennium Monument, Putrajaya with 30 hours of nonstop performance, family activities, showcases and fireworks.

Communications Ministry To Conduct Study On Music Industry Development, Issues And Challenges
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 20 (Bernama) -- The Ministry of Communications is implementing a Music Industry Development Study to examine issues, challenges and proposed action plans towards empowering the sustainable and dynamic development of the Malaysian music industry. Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil said the study is also refining business models, governance, staffing and specific laws that can support the development of the industry. 'For music, we currently do not have a specific act, therefore the ministry is looking into the best way to ensure that an act is drafted to ensure the welfare, sustainability and development of the music industry. 'We are looking into it and this study also takes into account the views and input of music industry players through the Music Industry Protem Committee,' he said when winding up the debate on the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP) motion for the Ministry of Communications at the Dewan Rakyat today. He said a total of 20 members of the Music Industry Protem Committee had been appointed, from various fields including composers, lyricists, recording companies or studios, singers, musicians, Collective Management Organisations (CMOs), publishing companies, association representatives, academicians and event management. Fahmi said the results of the study would be used as input in determining the availability and need for a specific body to regulate the development of the music industry or to include the music industry in the functions of existing agencies or regulatory bodies. Regarding the proposed amendments to the National Film Development Corporation of Malaysia Act (Finas) 1981 (Act 244), Fahmi said it is expected to be tabled in the upcoming Parliament meeting scheduled for this October. He said the process of improving the act includes expanding the scope of regulation, governance, functions and enforcement aspects of the act. Among the proposed amendments under Act 244 is related to the membership of Finas Corporation Members, which falls under the scope of governance which aims to improve the membership structure so that it consists of experienced local film industry players, has an excellent record of achievement in the field of local film and has credibility in fighting for the welfare of industry players.
