No backward steps: Cockerill's Georgia ready to take on the Springboks

If any rugby follower is unsure how Georgia will approach Saturday's encounter with the Springboks in Mbombela, they need only cast their minds back to the day England hooker Richard Cockerill shoved an All Black during the Haka.
It was 1997, and Cockerill — now the head coach of Georgia — decided to fight fire with fire. As his teammates faced the Haka, Cockerill marched up to his opposite number, Norm Hewitt. The two locked eyes, went nose to nose, and the standoff ended with Cockerill shoving Hewitt. The All Blacks cried foul, but Cockerill refused to apologise.

It is that same uncompromising attitude that has made him a popular figure with a Georgian side that thrives on physicality.
In his first campaign in charge, Cockerill led Georgia to the 2024 Rugby Europe Championship title — their seventh in a row. He also oversaw their 2024 Pacific tour, where the Lelos secured a first win over Japan since 2014. Later that year, they beat Tonga and came agonisingly close to toppling Italy in Genoa, narrowly losing 20–17.
In March 2025, Georgia defended their Rugby Europe title and qualified for the 2027 World Cup.
Unsurprisingly, Cockerill says his side won't take a step back against the Boks.
'We can't be timid,' he told reporters.
'I'm a former international — I played against James Dalton many times — and there were no backward steps in those confrontations. So, the only way for us to compete on Saturday is to roll our sleeves out, stick our gumshields in, and get in the middle of it.
"What else can we do?'
As cocky as Cockerill has always been — whether as a player or a coach at Toulon, Leicester, Edinburgh or Montpellier — he understands that taking on the brutal Boks on South African soil is about as tough as it gets.
'We're a physical team, we're a physical nation. We like the physical parts of the game. But the next level of physicality and mentality is South Africa — for sure — and we want to see where we sit relative to the Boks.
'There's only one way to take on a team like South Africa, and that's head-on. And we'll see if we're good enough to compete, to stay with them.'
Cockerill knows several Springbok players from his time coaching at Leicester and Edinburgh, and he's closely acquainted with debutant loosehead prop Boan Venter.
'They've picked a different front row this week. I know Boan very well — I signed him for Edinburgh from the Cheetahs. They've picked a strong pack, but the only way to go at it is full noise. I'm not going to make any outlandish promises like 'we're going to smash the Boks,' but we want to go out and compete.'
Georgia have played two Tests against South Africa. Their first meeting came at the 2003 Rugby World Cup in Australia — the match marked a youthful John Smit's debut as Bok captain. Their second was a warm-up Test during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, ahead of South Africa's series against the British & Irish Lions in 2021.
Last week, the Lelos warmed up for the Springboks by playing the Cheetahs in Bloemfontein, where they fell to a narrow 24–20 defeat after conceding a last-minute try.

Boks batter Georgia in tough Mbombela clash
The Springboks emerged as convincing victors from their final Castle Lager Incoming Series test of the year, against Georgia, at Mbombela Stadium on July 19. Saturday night's clash, while far from perfect for the Boks, presented them with a lot of success and the perfect way to finish off their three-match series. Determined to spoil the part in Mbombela, Georgia were first to rack up some points, crossing the whitewash within the first five minutes to take a surprise 7-0 lead. The Boks first drew blood through one of the three debutants in their front row, Boan Venter, who managed to score his first test try. Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu's conversion rebounded off the post to keep Georgia in the lead. While they struggled to find their feet early on, the Springboks ultimately kicked on and began asserting themselves on their opposition. Mbombela local and yet another debutant, Marnus van der Merwe, crashed over the line to enjoy a fine start to life as a test rugby player. Canan Moodie scored a try of his own before Georgia added three more points to their tally. Marnus' dream test debut continued, and he scored his second try of the game to round out the half and give the Boks a 22-10 lead at the break. It took only four minutes of play in the second half for the famous Bomb Squad to show their faces in front of a raucous Mbombela crowd. Edwill van der Merwe, who was excellent in the air throughout the game, scored the first try of the second period, which also went unconverted. Damian Willemse was next to cross the try line for the Boks, before things quietened down for most of the second half as the Georgians managed to disrupt much of the momentum the home side built. Edwill scored his second of the game, followed by a Handré Pollard conversion, to give the Boks a 41-10 lead. Kurt-Lee Arendse reached a special landmark with one minute to go, scoring his 20th Springbok try to notch up 100 points in the green and gold. The last say belonged to Pollard though, who scored a try of his own and converted it to wrap the game up in a neat bow that saw the Boks emerge 55-10 victors. The game was far from easy for the Springboks, especially up front, as true to their nature the Georgians fought hard from the first whistle to the last. They ensured the home side felt their presence, be it through tough scrummaging or hard tackles that sent a good few Springboks back in their stride. While the scoreline shines favourably on the Boks, the game was far from perfect and there are a good few lessons to be learnt before they take on Argentina, Australia and New Zealand in The Rugby Championship. Picture: Anton Geyser/Gallo Images Springbok captain Siya Kolisi said that his side weren't completely satisfied with their performance, despite picking up a big 55-10 win over Georgia in their one-off Test at the Mbombela Stadium on Saturday. The Boks got off to a slow start, with the visitors scoring the first try, before the hosts battled back to lead 22-10 at halftime and then powered away with a further five tries in the second half to cruise over the 50 point mark. Speaking after the game Kolisi admitted that they weren't able put enough consecutive positive plays together, which stemmed their flow and led to a difficult first half effort, before improving after the break which allowed them to open up a bit more. 'It was a tough game, credit to the Georgians, they came hard in the first half. Physically they matched us most of the time, and we struggled at the breakdown, they were quite dominant there. So we were happy with the way we cleaned up in the second half,' said Kolisi. 'The problem was we weren't able to produce enough positives one after the other. We did something good and then we would make a mistake, so that slowed down our momentum. 'The game was also a bit slow, and was very stop-start. But hopefully we can fix our problems and make sure that we build on our positives going forward.' Competition for places It was a rookie front row that turned out for the Boks in the match, with props Boan Venter, Neethling Fouche and hooker Marnus van der Merwe all making their official debuts for the national team, and they produced a solid effort first up, impressing in the scrums, while also making a few mistakes in general play. Edwill van der Merwe (third cap), and Cobus Wiese (second cap) were also given valuable game time, and Kolisi said the competition in the squad is great and is keeping the more experienced players on their toes. 'I am happy for them (debutants). Congratulations to them and their families. The coach is building squad depth while we are winning, and you can see the amount of competition in the group. The guys (who played) last week set the standard,' explained Kolisi. 'I think in the first half here we didn't live up to that standard and had to pick it up in the second half. So competition is tight and everyone who gets an opportunity has got to take it. But that's what keeps the squad fresh and on their toes.' Lock Ruan Nortje is also growing game by game, with this his eighth appearance for the Boks, and he produced a fantastic effort against the Georgians, which saw him named man-of-the-match. 'It is always special to play in Mbombela, the supporters are amazing. Credit to Georgia for bringing it tonight. We knew they are a physical team and rising in the ranks, so it was an awesome challenge against them,' said Nortje.

PLAYER RATINGS: Super-charged debutants lead the way for Springboks
The Springboks beat Georgia 55-10 in Mbombela on Saturday to wrap up their mid-year Test campaign with a perfect three from three wins. South Africa put in a ruthless display to wear down the spirited Lelos on their way to a commanding 45-point win. The result sees South Africa maintain their perfect start to the Test season with a third consecutive victory and also keep their 100% record in Mbombela in tact. So as the Springbok juggernaut rolls on, here are some key player ratings based on today's individual performances: All scores out of 10 Marnus van der Merwe 9 What a debut for the Scarlets-based No 2. The hooker earned his first Springbok cap today and he made the most of the opportunity. The 28-year-old bagged two tries from the back of the maul in front of his home crowd to make his Test debut even more memorable. Boan Venter 8 Another one of the three debutants today, who didn't look an inch out of place. The prop was solid across the park. And while the Springboks' front row did concede a couple of penalties with him on the field, that was to be expected against the Georgians. Ruan Nortje 8/10 Nortje was voted as the official Man of the Match and deservedly so. He went to the trenches today and covered almost every blade of grass on that field. World class performance from the Bulls man. Handre Pollard 8 With Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu struggling through the game, Pollard came on and showed once again why he is the Springboks' first-choice flyhalf. The two-time World Cup winner knocked over all his kicks at goal and capped off another fine outing with a try and a try-assist. Edwill van der Merwe 7 The winger just continues to try-scoring exploits at the highest level. He crossed for two touchdowns against the Lelos to make it five tries in three Test starts for the Springboks. Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu 5 It wasn't exactly a disaster-class, but the young playmaker must do better if he wants to usurp Pollard at No 10. Feinberg-Mngomezulu had a couple of fine touches in open play, showing glimpses of his attacking prowess. But his inaccurate goal-kicking left much to be desired.
