Saudi side drop out of Xhaka race – Sunderland and Fenerbahce still in the running

Yahoo3 days ago
According to Sacha Tavolieri, Granit Xhaka will not be joining Neom SC this summer.
After agreeing personal terms with the Swiss international, the Saudi Arabian side saw an opening €8 million offer rejected by Bayer Leverkusen.
Unwilling to raise their bid, Neom SC have now withdrawn from the race.
Tavolieri adds that Sunderland and Fenerbahce are currently the leading contenders for Xhaka's signature, though there is a sense the midfielder is holding out for the best possible offer.
A stay at Leverkusen also remains an option, with Die Werkself hopeful that clarity over his future will come soon.
'Of course, we're now in the phase where we're finalizing the squad – that's obvious. Granit plays an important role in that, which is why it certainly won't be an issue that drags on throughout the entire transfer window," Bayer Leverkusen managing director for sport Simon Rolfes recently said.

Top four in Cats' sights as Saints lose six in a row

Geelong have inched closer to securing a top-four berth, with a five-goal haul from spearhead Jeremy Cameron leading them to a hard-fought 31-point win over St Kilda at GMHBA Stadium. Looking a class above their opponents all day, the Cats won 17.11 (113) to 12.10 (82) in front of a vocal home crowd of 29,985 spectators. The writing was on the wall early, as Geelong kicked four unanswered goals to start the match, and while the Saints fought back hard to stay in touch in an entertaining end-to-end battle, the home side answered every challenge. St Kilda's engine room battled hard throughout, finishing with more clearances and contested possessions than the Cats, but Geelong's class on the outside proved the difference. How about this crazy bounce from Shaun Mannagh? 😮#AFLCatsSaints — AFL (@AFL) July 20, 2025 With coaches Ross Lyon and Chris Scott content to let their midfields fight it out without any hard tags, St Kilda Star Nasiah Wanganeen-Milera emerged as the most damaging player on the ground. The out-of-contract 22-year-old was everywhere for the Saints, using his running power to collect 36 disposals, his smarts around stoppages to win 10 clearances, and his exquisite kicking to snare two goals and set up multiple others. But while Wanganeen-Milera was clearly the Saints' best player, the Cats had even contributors across the board. Max Holmes ran riot through the middle with 32 disposals, while Ollie Dempsey (25 possessions) was outstanding in his 50th game. Coleman Medal leader Jeremy Cameron had four goals to his name by half-time, with a sublime drop punt from a tight angle the highlight of the match, and added a fifth late in the final term. But Cameron was far from the only threat in Geelong's forward half, with Shaun Mannagh kicking three goals from his 24 disposals, and Tyson Stengle, Patrick Dangerfield and Jack Martin each grabbing two. The only sour point for Geelong was an injury concern to star defender Tom Stewart, who was subbed out in the third quarter with a knee complaint. St Kilda has now lost six games in a row, with their most recent win coming against Melbourne in Round 12 before the Saints' mid-season bye. Geelong looks well-placed to finish in the top four for the sixth time in the past seven seasons, with just five home-and-away games left. The Cats have notched 12 wins and are likely to start favourites in their remaining games against North Melbourne, Port Adelaide, Essendon, Sydney and Richmond, all of whom sit in the bottom half of the ladder.

He will undergo a medical today to be immediately available to Gian Piero Gasperini. The midfielder will sign a five-year contract worth €1.5 million per season. Lens earned a total of €25 million since his transfer: €22 million in fixed compensation plus €3 million in bonuses. According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, compared to the other Giallorossi midfielders, the player stands out in several areas: he averages 1.9 interceptions per game compared to his teammates' average of 0.9, scored eight goals last season, had a 55% shot accuracy rate, and completed 88.5% of passes.

Liverpool legend questions Bayern move for Diaz

Liverpool Stand Firm as Bayern's Diaz Pursuit Sparks Criticism Bayern's gamble on Diaz triggers sharp response In a summer market already tilting toward the chaotic, Bayern Munich's £58.6 million bid for Liverpool's Luis Diaz has landed like a thunderclap. The Bundesliga champions — eager to replenish their attacking ranks — thought they had found a solution in the Colombian winger. But Liverpool's answer was firm: not for sale. Diaz, now 28 and entering his prime years, has reportedly voiced some uncertainty about his long-term future at Anfield. 'We're talking,' he admitted during Colombia's recent international break, acknowledging discussions with other clubs and describing his future as being 'in the club's hands.' Yet for all the speculation, the Reds remain unmoved. Arne Slot views him as essential to his plans and Liverpool, Premier League champions once more, are not in the business of selling starters — certainly not without an offer that would shift the tectonic plates. Hamann questions Bayern's logic in Diaz pursuit The bid has not only failed but provoked a strong backlash — from an unlikely source. Didi Hamann, a former midfielder for both Liverpool and Bayern Munich, did not pull any punches in his assessment of his old German club's strategy. Photo: IMAGO 'To now bring in Luis Diaz, a 28-year-old South American who played 50 games per season for four or five years and has those long flights home, which are also a problem,' Hamann said bluntly on Sky Germany. 'To pay 70 or 80 million for that, while the sale value is zero because he would be 32 at the end of his contract. I wonder what they even have the campus (academy) for?' His remarks reflect more than just financial prudence. There is a growing sentiment within German football that Bayern's dependency on high-profile imports may be stunting the development of their homegrown talents. No new contract on the table — yet no panic Although Diaz has not received a new contract offer from Liverpool — and his £140,000-a-week salary remains untouched since his 2022 move from Porto — the club appears relaxed. Diaz is contracted until 2027, and insiders have consistently rubbished claims of discontent over wages. The winger's performances have been more than respectable: 148 appearances, 41 goals, 16 assists, and four domestic trophies. His output, though not electric, is steady. His value to the system — his relentless pressing, his capacity to disrupt opposition shapes — is less tangible but no less real. Slot's project leaves no room for uncertainty Slot has been clear: Diaz is part of his vision. And unless Bayern (or Barcelona, who've also sniffed around) return with an astronomical bid, Diaz will still be in red come September. Whether he wants to be is a more delicate matter. But if Liverpool can once again offer trophies and Champions League lights, then even amid European temptation, the Colombian's best footballing future may still lie on Merseyside.
