At least 36 killed by Israeli fire while seeking aid in Gaza, hospital says

GAZA (Reuters) -At least 36 people were killed by Israeli fire while they were on their way to an aid distribution site in Gaza at dawn on Saturday, according to the Gaza Health Ministry and Nasser Hospital in Khan Younis.
The Israeli military said it had fired warning shots at suspects who approached its troops after they did not heed calls to stop, about a kilometre away from an aid distribution site that was not active at the time.
Gaza resident Mohammed al-Khalidi said he was in the group approaching the site and heard no warnings before the firing began.
"We thought they came out to organise us so we can get aid, suddenly (I) saw the jeeps coming from one side, and the tanks from the other and started shooting at us," he said.
The Gaza Humanitarian Foundation, a U.S.-backed group which runs the aid site, said there were no incidents or fatalities there on Saturday and that it has repeatedly warned people not to travel to its distribution points in the dark.
"The reported IDF (Israel Defence Forces) activity resulting in fatalities occurred hours before our sites opened and our understanding is most of the casualties occurred several kilometres away from the nearest GHF site," it said.
The Israeli military said it was reviewing the incident.
"NO MORE TIME"
GHF uses private U.S. security and logistics companies to get supplies into Gaza, largely bypassing a U.N.-led system that Israel alleges has let Hamas-led militants loot aid shipments intended for civilians. Hamas denies the accusation.
The U.N. has called the GHF's model unsafe and a breach of humanitarian impartiality standards, which GHF denies.
On Tuesday, the U.N. rights office in Geneva said it had recorded at least 875 killings within the past six weeks in the vicinity of aid sites and food convoys in Gaza - the majority of them close to GHF distribution points.
Most of those deaths were caused by gunfire that locals have blamed on the Israeli military. The military has acknowledged that civilians were harmed, saying that Israeli forces had been issued new instructions with "lessons learned".
At least 50 more people were killed in other Israeli attacks across Gaza on Saturday, health officials said, including one strike that killed the head of the Hamas-run police force in Nuseirat in central Gaza and 11 of his family members.
The Israeli military said that it had struck militants' weapon depots and sniping posts in a few locations in the enclave.
The war began when Hamas-led militants stormed into Israel on October 7, 2023, killing 1,200 people, mostly civilians and taking 251 hostages back to Gaza.
The Israeli military campaign against Hamas in Gaza has since killed around 58,000 Palestinians, most of them civilians according to health officials, displaced almost the entire population and plunged the enclave into a humanitarian crisis, leaving much of the territory in ruins.
Israel and Hamas are engaged in indirect talks in Doha aimed at reaching a U.S.-proposed 60-day ceasefire and a hostage deal mediated by Egypt and Qatar, though there has been no sign of any imminent breakthrough.
At least 20 of the remaining 50 hostages in Gaza are believed to still be alive. Einav Zangauker, whose son Matan was kidnapped from his kibbutz home and is held by Hamas, urged Israel's leaders to make a deal with the militant group.
"An entire people wants to bring all 50 hostages home and end the war," Zangauker said in a statement outside Israel's defence headquarters in Tel Aviv.
"My Matan is alone in the tunnels," she said, "He has no more time."

Woman killed in overnight San Leandro shooting

SAN LEANDRO, Calif. (KRON) — San Leandro police are investigating a homicide after a woman was shot and killed Thursday night while walking her dogs with her boyfriend. The San Leandro Police Department responded at 11:11 p.m. to East 14th and Williams streets on the report of a shooting. First responders found a woman who was shot at least once in the torso. She was rushed to a local hospital, where she was pronounced deceased. The victim's identity has not been released. According to authorities, the woman was with her boyfriend and walking her two dogs down East 14th Street when a suspect pulled up and got out of his car. 'After a brief interaction, the suspect drew a firearm and shot the victim once in the torso,' San Leandro police said. The suspect then got back into his car and took off. The woman's boyfriend and the dogs were uninjured in the shooting. The dogs were taken by police service technicians to a temporary shelter, SLPD Lieutenant Abe Teng said. On Friday morning, San Leandro police announced that Rohith Sunil, 21, of San Jose, was detained by officers in Dublin after finding him in possession of a firearm. Detectives connected him to the shooting by descriptions of the suspect and the vehicle, police said. Sunil was arrested for suspicion of murder after more evidence was obtained by detectives, SLPD said. Police have not released any possible motives for the killing. The killing comes just over a month after Ryan M. Christie was gunned down while walking his dog along Euclid Avenue near East 14th Street. According to San Leandro police, no connection has been made between the two homicides or the suspects in each case, and there is 'no basis to believe they are part of a mounting pattern.' Man arrested in Vallejo murder case: PD

(KRON) — A 42-year-old man from San Jose has been charged with second-degree murder for the death of a woman who was shot and killed in Vallejo on July 5. A woman suffering from at least one gunshot wound was found unconscious on the 400 block of Admiral Callaghan Lane in Vallejo around 1:36 a.m. She was taken to the hospital where she later died of her injuries. Woman shot dead in Vallejo identified The Vallejo Police Department announced on July 18 that it had arrested the 'primary suspect' in the case. The suspected killer, Jose Guadalupe Castillo, now faces multiple felony charges, including second-degree murder, shooting at an inhabited dwelling, being a felon in possession of a firearm, and committing a felony while out on bail. 'A records check revealed that Castillo was currently out on bail for a previous arrest made by the Vallejo Police Department on May 3, 2025, for willfully discharging a firearm in a grossly negligent manner and for being a felon in possession of a firearm,' the Vallejo Police Department said. Castillo was initially arrested on July 16 following a brief foot chase near Admiral Callaghan Lane, according to VPD. 'When the officers attempted to contact Castillo, he tried to evade them and quickly walked into a convenience store,' VPD said. 'The officers entered the store and arrested Castillo without incident.' Woman killed in overnight San Leandro shooting During his arrest, officers allegedly found a gun with an extended magazine in the aisle where he had been standing. Castillo was initially booked into the Solano County Jail for a felon in possession of a firearm. However, two days later, the Solano County District Attorney's Office reviewed the evidence submitted by VPD detectives and subsequently charged him with second-degree murder. Based on the time, location and circumstances of the victim's death, the arrest is seemingly related to the homicide of 45-year-old Vallejo resident Courtney Whitney. KRON4 contacted VPD and the Solano County District Attorney's Office in an attempt to confirm the connection between Whitney's death and Castillo's arrest. However, as of 5 p.m. Friday, the agencies have not responded. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten, or redistributed.
