Sarawak to supply Sabah next month: Part of the Borneo Grid plan

KUCHING: Sarawak will supply Sabah with 30MW of electricity starting August 2025 and this grid will also eventually connect to Brunei Darussalam as part of the Borneo Grid which it prioritises before realising supplying to the Asean Grid – to Singapore and the Philippines in future. Sarawak is supporting Malaysia in advancing the Asean Power Grid by realising an 'Interconnected Borneo' first. Malaysia is the Chairman of Asean this year.
Advertisement Its plan for the Peninsular Malaysia and Singapore Interconnection is 1,000MW each from the mid-2030s via a 700-km submarine cable. 'Sarawak has been exporting 100 to 200MW of electricity since 2016 through the West Kalimantan Interconnection,' revealed Datuk Sharbini Suhaili, Group Chief Executive Officer Sarawak Energy Berhad at the International Energy Week 2025, at the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK). The event is dubbed 'Borneo's Biggest International Energy Expo & Summit', themed: 'From Sarawak to the World: Journey to Clean Energy Leadership'. Sharbini is proud that Sarawak has put Malaysia on the world's map as a sustainable source of renewable clean energy, and by this role, the largest state in Malaysia is recognised for its leadership in green energy. Panel speaker, Puah Kok Keong, the Chief Executive of Energy Market Authority of Singapore noted that Sarawak has the lowest electricity tariff in Malaysia. He said whilst Singapore's electricity tariff is at Singapore 30 cents, Sarawak Energy offers the lowest unsubsidised tariffs in Malaysia and among the most competitive in the Southeast Asia region for organic residential, industrial and commercial customers averaging 28 sen/kWh, as its energy landscape comprises of a balanced capacity mix of 60 per cent renewable energy. Sarawak's unique energy landscape enables the state to be at the cusp of a transformative clean energy era. While the state is powered by predominantly renewable hydropower, it is also advancing alternative renewable energy like solar, biomass, etc. This afforded Sarawak Energy an opportunity to diversify its customer base and market besides the sharing of generation of renewables capacity. This facilitates regional energy trading, optimal resource utilization and promotes renewable energy integration. It also has abundant indigenous gas and coal resources for energy security and reliability of supply. Nevertheless, the state is on course to phase out coal from energy mix in future. Sharbini said 'Sarawak Energy is committed to achieving balanced energy development, focusing on energy security, sustainability and affordability to drive sustainable socioeconomic transformation in Sarawak.' Sarawak is harnessing its renewable hydropower with its Batang Ai (94MW since 1985), Bakun (2,520MW since 2011) which is the largest in Southeast Asia, Murum (944MW since 2014), and Baleh (1,285MW to be fully commissioned in 2030) to realize the Borneo grid before exporting surplus electricity to Singapore and West Malaysia. 'All hydropower facilities operated by Sarawak Energy are guided by the International Commission on Large Dams (ICOLD) and the Hydropower Sustainability Standard (HSS),' Sharbini said as he elaborated on the strategic importance of enhancing energy connectivity across Asean nations to create a resilient, efficient and integrated energy network. He called on Asean governments to allow the private sector to drive this energy transformation across Asean with support for fundings. Singaporean Puah Kok Keong revealed that the Singapore government has allocated some S$10 billion to the Singapore Future Energy Fund which must be spent prudently for this purpose. Anwar should stay on as PM for political stability, says Rafizi
Pandan MP Rafizi Ramli said a stable government is needed to manage the current economic challenges and complete the current term. PETALING JAYA : Anwar Ibrahim should remain as prime minister until the end of his term to ensure political stability amid economic uncertainty, says former economy minister Rafizi Ramli. Rafizi, who is Pandan MP, said any change in government now could disrupt efforts to manage growing economic challenges, including slowing growth projections across the Asean region. 'We can't have a change of government right now as we're facing serious economic challenges,' he said in the latest episode of the Yang Berhenti Menteri podcast yesterday. He cited forecasts indicating that countries like Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnam, Singapore and the Philippines could see growth drop by 2% to 3%. If Malaysia's growth falls to 3% or lower, it could pose a serious risk to the country over the next one to two years, he said. He said a stable government is needed to manage the situation and complete the current term. Perikatan Nasional has planned a 'Turun Anwar' mass rally for July 26 to push for Anwar's resignation. Organisers claim they expect up to 300,000 participants, although a similar protest in Shah Alam earlier this month drew just over 300. Rafizi also said he has no intention of criticising or embarrassing Anwar in the Dewan Rakyat when it reconvenes on Monday. This comes after Anwar said he had no plans to take disciplinary action against PKR MPs who expressed differing views on judicial appointments. Last week, 19 PKR divisions in Johor called for Rafizi and eight other MPs to be suspended after they demanded a royal commission of inquiry (RCI) and a parliamentary hearing into delays in appointing top judicial posts. The nine MPs claimed the matter amounted to a constitutional crisis, an allegation which the Attorney-General's Chambers denied. The AGC also dismissed the call for an RCI, stating that the appointment process was proceeding at the time in accordance with the Federal Constitution. Since then, Wan Ahmad Farid Wan Salleh has been appointed chief justice, replacing Tengku Maimun Tuan Mat, who retired earlier this month. The Yang di-Pertuan Agong also consented to the appointments of Abu Bakar Jais as Court of Appeal president and Azizah Nawawi as chief judge of Sabah and Sarawak. All three will be sworn in and receive their letters of appointment at Istana Negara on July 28.

Speaker Tan Sri Johari Abdul said his office has received a wide range of motions from the honourable Members of Parliament (MPs), indicating a packed and intense session ahead. 'So I call on the people on the ground, when the 13MP is tabled, they have to inform their MPs about what they want to be raised in Parliament. 'Tag their MPs (on social media) so that their voices can be heard. Don't wait until the MPs return to their constituencies to complain. Raise the issue while Parliament is in session,' he said after officiating the National Information Dissemination Centre (NADI) at Taman Pekan Baru today. Johari said the sitting will probably be extended into the night to accommodate the packed schedule, beginning daily at 10am and possibly continuing until 10pm or 11pm. Johari noted that the tabling of the 13MP is particularly significant as Malaysia holds the Asean Chairmanship this year, and it offers an opportunity to showcase the country's resilience and progress amid global uncertainties. In another development, he urged the public to fully utilise services made available at NADI centres to improve their livelihoods and economic opportunities. 'NADI isn't just about digital access or community programmes. It can be a one-stop centre for people to obtain vital information and explore business opportunities. 'It's a platform to gain knowledge not only academically but also across various fields. I encourage youth, especially, to take advantage of these centres to learn and engage with their communities,' he said.
