Egypt, 10 Arab and Islamic nations reject foreign interference in Syria - Foreign Affairs

Al-Ahram Weekly2 days ago
Egypt and ten other Arab and Islamic countries reaffirmed on Thursday their support for Syria's security, unity, stability, and sovereignty, rejecting all foreign interference in its internal affairs.
In a joint statement, the foreign ministers of Egypt, Lebanon, Jordan, Iraq, Saudi Arabia, UAE, Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain, Oman, and Turkey emphasised that Syria's security and stability are fundamental to regional security and a shared priority.
According to the Egyptian Foreign Ministry, the top diplomats held extensive discussions on the latest developments in Syria, stressing the importance of maintaining a unified position.
They called for joint international efforts to support the Syrian government in rebuilding the country on foundations that guarantee its security, stability, unity, sovereignty, and the rights of all its citizens.
The statement also welcomed the Sweida agreement, underscoring the need for its implementation to safeguard Syria's unity and sovereignty, prevent further bloodshed, and uphold the protection of civilians and the rule of law.
They also praised Syrian President Ahmad Al-Sharaa's commitment to holding all those responsible for violations against citizens in Sweida accountable.
Additionally, the statement expressed support for all efforts to restore security, state sovereignty, and the rule of law across Sweida and all Syrian territory, while rejecting violence, sectarianism, and attempts to incite division and hatred.
The ministers condemned repeated Israeli attacks on Syria as blatant violations of international law and flagrant assaults on Syria's sovereignty.
The statement affirmed that such violations undermine Syria's security, stability, and territorial integrity, as well as the Syrian government's efforts to rebuild the country in line with the aspirations of its people.
The ministers called on the UN Security Council (UNSC) to fulfil its legal and moral responsibilities to ensure Israel's complete withdrawal from occupied Syrian territories and halt Israel's hostile actions and interference in Syria.
The statement further emphasised the necessity of implementing UNSC Resolution 2766 and the 1974 Disengagement Agreement between Syria and Israel.
On Tuesday, Israel carried out airstrikes against Syrian government forces in the predominantly Druze southern Syria's Sweida province.
The Israeli attacks followed the breaking out of clashes between residents of the city and government forces, with Tel Aviv vowing to protect the Druze population.
According to AFP, nearly 600 people have been killed in Sweida, following several days of clashes and violence, along with Israeli strikes.

Gaza Sees Nearly One Hundred Killed, Hundreds Injured in 48 Hours

H-Tayea The Ministry of Health in Gaza has confirmed that 98 Palestinians have been killed and 511 others injured by Israeli gunfire within the last 48 hours, marking one of the deadliest short periods in the ongoing war. Among the dead are individuals who were only recently recovered from beneath the rubble, highlighting the continued difficulty of rescue efforts. Since the beginning of the Israeli assault on October 7, 2023, Gaza's total death toll has now surged to 58,765, with 140,485 people injured. The Ministry warned that these numbers may still rise, as many victims remain under collapsed buildings or lying in open streets, unreachable by medical or civil defense teams due to the intensity of the bombardment and lack of access. From March 18, 2025, until today, the ministry reported 7,938 new deaths and 28,444 injuries, pointing to a particularly violent and destructive phase of the conflict. The ministry also reported disturbing figures about Palestinians who were killed while simply trying to secure basic necessities. In the last two days alone, 14 people were killed and more than 94 injured while attempting to collect humanitarian aid. This brings the total number of people killed while seeking food or assistance to 891, with over 5,754 others injured in similar incidents since the start of the war. read more Gold prices rise, 21 Karat at EGP 3685 NATO's Role in Israeli-Palestinian Conflict US Expresses 'Strong Opposition' to New Turkish Military Operation in Syria Shoukry Meets Director-General of FAO Lavrov: confrontation bet. nuclear powers must be avoided News Iran Summons French Ambassador over Foreign Minister Remarks News Aboul Gheit Condemns Israeli Escalation in West Bank News Greek PM: Athens Plays Key Role in Improving Energy Security in Region News One Person Injured in Explosion at Ukrainian Embassy in Madrid News Israeli-Linked Hadassah Clinic in Moscow Treats Wounded Iranian IRGC Fighters News China Launches Largest Ever Aircraft Carrier Sports Former Al Zamalek Player Ibrahim Shika Passes away after Long Battle with Cancer Videos & Features Tragedy Overshadows MC Alger Championship Celebration: One Fan Dead, 11 Injured After Stadium Fall Lifestyle Get to Know 2025 Eid Al Adha Prayer Times in Egypt Arts & Culture South Korean Actress Kang Seo-ha Dies at 31 after Cancer Battle News "Tensions Escalate: Iran Probes Allegations of Indian Tech Collaboration with Israeli Intelligence" Sports Get to Know 2025 WWE Evolution Results News Flights suspended at Port Sudan Airport after Drone Attacks Arts & Culture Hawass Foundation Launches 1st Course to Teach Ancient Egyptian Language

US envoy Huckabee calls for accountability after Israeli settlers attack church in West Bank village - War on Gaza

US Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee on Saturday visited a Christian village in the occupied West Bank and urged accountability for an arson attack by Israeli settlers on an ancient church. In early July, Israeli settlers carried out an arson attack on the village of Taybeh in the area of the ruins of the Byzantine-era Church of Saint George, which dates back to the fifth century. The attack came as violence against Palestinians soars in the West Bank, and last week saw an American-Palestinian killed by Israeli settlers near Ramallah. Ambassador Huckabee, an evangelical Christian and staunch advocate for Israel, said his trip to Taybeh aimed to "express solidarity with the people who just want to live their lives in peace, to be able to go to their own land, to be able to go to their place of worship". "It doesn't matter whether it's a mosque, a church, a synagogue," he told journalists. "It's unacceptable to commit an act of sacrilege by desecrating a place that is supposed to be a place of worship." "We will certainly insist that those who carry out acts of terror and violence in Taybeh or anywhere be found, be prosecuted, not just reprimanded. That's not enough," he said. "People need to pay a price for doing something that destroys that which belongs not just to other people, but that which belongs to God." The rare condemnation came days after an Israeli air strike targeted the Holy Family Church in northern Gaza, killing two people and wounding several others, including a parish priest, Gaza civil defence, and church officials said on Thursday. In the villages and communities around Taybeh, Palestinian authorities reported that settlers had killed three people and damaged or destroyed multiple water sources in the past two weeks alone. Israel has occupied the West Bank since 1967, and violence has surged in the territory since Israel's war on the Gaza Strip began in October 2023. Since then, Israeli troops or settlers have killed at least 957 Palestinians, including civilians, in the West Bank, according to health ministry figures. Over the same period, at least 36 Israelis, including soldiers, have been killed in Palestinian attacks or during Israeli military operations, according to official figures. Huckabee, a longtime outspoken supporter of Israeli settlement expansion in the occupied Palestinian territories -- considered illegal under international law -- on Tuesday demanded an aggressive investigation and accountability after Israeli settlers beat a Palestinian-American to death in the West Bank. It was a sign of rare public pressure against US ally Israel by President Donald Trump's administration. *This story was edited by Ahram Online. Follow us on: Facebook Instagram Whatsapp Short link:
