IndyCar officials and Pato O'Ward shocked by ICE-related 'Speedway Slammer' post
IndyCar driver Pato O'Ward and series officials were shocked by a social media post from the Department of Homeland Security that touts plans for an immigration detention center in Indiana dubbed 'Speedway Slammer," and includes a car with the same number as the only Mexican driver in the series. 'It caught a lot of people off guard. Definitely caught me off guard,' O'Ward said Wednesday. 'I was just a little bit shocked at the coincidences of that and, you know, of what it means. ... I don't think it made a lot of people proud, to say the least.' The post Tuesday included an image of a IndyCar-style vehicle with the No. 5 that had 'ICE' imposed on it multiple times similar to the display of a sponsor. It appeared to be a computer-created image, with the car on a track and a prison-like building in the background. Indiana is home to Indianapolis Motor Speedway, and is where the IndyCar Series is based. 'We were unaware of plans to incorporate our imagery as part of yesterday's announcement,' IndyCar said in a statement Wednesday. "Consistent with our approach to public policy and political issues, we are communicating our preference that our IP not be utilized moving forward in relation to this matter.' O'Ward said he didn't see the post until a friend texted him about it. 'I haven't really read into it too much because I don't think I want to,' he said. Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem in a separate post used 'SpeedwaySlammer' when announcing the new partnership with the state of Indiana to expand detention space by 1,000 beds. O'Ward, who is second in points in IndyCar this season, was in Texas to promote next year's inaugural Grand Prix of Arlington. That race on March 15 will be on a 2.7-mile layout that goes around the home stadiums of the NFL's Dallas Cowboys and MLB's Texas Rangers. O'Ward threw a ceremonial first pitch before the Rangers' game against the New York Yankees.

Son Heung-min completes move to LAFC from Tottenham in MLS record deal
Son Heung-min has completed a move from Tottenham Hotspur to Los Angeles FC in what is a record Major League Soccer transfer. Son has officially ended his 10-year stay at Spurs, where he scored 173 goals in 454 appearances and led the team to Europa League glory in May. After an agreement between Tottenham and LAFC was struck for a deal in excess of £20million, the 33-year-old arrived in Los Angeles on Tuesday and a day later he has finalised his transfer, which is the highest fee paid by an MLS club for a player. Son joined Spurs in 2015 from Bayer Leverkusen. After a tough debut campaign the South Korea captain went on to become one of the club's best ever players and made himself a Premier League great in the process. Alongside old partner in crime Harry Kane, Son holds the record for the most goal involvements by a duo in the Premier League, with the pair assisting each other on a record 47 occasions in the competition. The Chuncheon-born attacker also won the league's Golden Boot award in the 2021-22 season after scoring 23 times and he sits 17th in the list of all-time scorers in the division with 127 goals. Under former boss Mauricio Pochettino, Son's consistent displays helped turn Tottenham into genuine title contenders but silverware continued to allude them after a second-placed finish in 2017 was followed by a Champions League runner-up spot two years later. Whilst various members of Pochettino's team left not long after the Argentinian's winter departure in 2019, Son stayed to work under Jose Mourinho and Antonio Conte before he was tasked with leading a new era by Ange Postecoglou. Postecoglou named Son as his captain in the wake of Kane's high-profile switch to Bayern Munich and Hugo Lloris' departure from the first team and after a roller coaster two seasons under the Australian, they achieved the holy grail together on May 21. Frost re-sign F Dominique Petrie to two-year deal
August 6 - The Minnesota Frost re-signed forward Dominique Petrie to a two-year contract on Wednesday. Petrie, 24, had 10 points (three goals, seven assists) in 18 games during her 2024-25 rookie season. "Dom played a big role in our success last season, and we're thrilled to have her under contract for two more years so she can be a part of our future as well," said Frost general manager Melissa Caruso. "She's a smart, tough and tenacious player who knows how to find the back of the net." The Frost drafted Petrie in the fifth round (27th overall) in 2024.
