The Toronto Blue Jays are on top of the AL East heading into Friday night, but outfielder Anthony Santander has not played a big role in their success. The 30-year-old is slashing just .179/.273/.304 with six homers and 18 RBI in 50 games this season.

The Blue Jays signed Santander to a five-year, $92.5 million contract in January, including a club option in 2030. The veteran spent his previous eight seasons with the Baltimore Orioles and smashed 44 homers and 102 RBI last year.
Santander hasn't played since May 29 due to a shoulder injury, and the Blue Jays announced some negative news on that front before Friday's bout with the Los Angeles Angels, via their social media.

The club transferred him to the 60-day IL. It also selected and activated right-handed pitching prospect Lazaro Estrada and optioned southpaw hurler Justin Bruihl to Triple-A.

Bruihl has allowed one earned run in 3.1 innings this season, while Estrada is 2-4 with a 4.75 ERA in 15 minor-league starts.
Toronto has won five straight games and is 8-2 in its last 10. The team is coming off a four-game sweep of the New York Yankees at home, which propelled it into first place. Both the Yankees and Tampa Bay Rays now trail it by one game in the standings.
Southpaw pitcher Eric Lauer (4-1, 2.60 ERA) will start for the Blue Jays on Friday against Angels right-hander Kyle Hendricks (5-6, 4.66 ERA). The game will start at 7:07 p.m. EST at the Rogers Centre.

Washington Commanders training camp preview: Wide receivers

The Washington Commanders spent this offseason adding more help for quarterback Jayden Daniels. The Commanders traded for left tackle Laremy Tunsil and wide receiver Deebo Samuel. Unfortunately, Washington is currently at odds with No. 1 wide receiver Terry McLaurin over a new contract. Ultimately, almost everyone believes the Commanders and McLaurin will reach a new agreement, giving Daniels an excellent 1-2 punch at wide receiver. What about the rest of Washington's wide receiver corps? In the latest installment of our training camp positional previews, we look at wide receiver. Offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury Assistant head coach/pass game coordinator Brian Johnson Wide receivers coach Bobby Engram Personnel analyst Kliff Kingsbury rebuilt his coaching stock with a huge year in Washington last year. He had opportunities to interview elsewhere, but chose to return. Johnson was the Eagles' offensive coordinator for one season before coming to Washington. He serves as another sounding board for quarterback Jayden Daniels. Engram enters his third season in Washington and has the trust and support of all of Washington's receivers. Welker joined Washington this offseason and gives the receivers two coaches who played the position at a high level in the NFL. WR Terry McLaurin WR Deebo Samuel WR Noah Brown Terry McLaurin is the unquestioned No. 1 wide receiver. McLaurin had a career year in his first season with Kingsbury as offensive coordinator and Jayden Daniels at quarterback. Contract issues aside, McLaurin will be on the field for Week 1. If a deal is not reached soon, McLaurin could miss some of training camp. Samuel can play outside, but he'll also see plenty of time in the slot. The Commanders will be creative with Samuel. His strength lies in his ability to gain yards after the catch. As for the other WR spot, we named Noah Brown, but it could also be Luke McCaffrey, depending on how well he performs in training camp. Luke McCaffrey Jaylin Lane (R) K.J. Osborn Michael Gallup Ja'Corey Brooks (R) Jacoby Jones (R) Chris Moore Michael Strachan There are lots of interesting names here. McCaffrey and Lane would appear to be the only locks of the bunch. Gallup is trying to revive his career after an injury and brief retirement. Perhaps he could play a similar role as Olamide Zaccheaus did last season for the Commanders if he makes the team. Osborn signed late last season, but barely saw the field. Washington re-signed him this offseason. Osborn has NFL experience and is still young. Brooks is one of the NFL's most intriguing undrafted free agents. He offers size and excellent ball skills. It will be interesting to see which of Washington's receivers stand out this summer. McCaffrey looks ready for a big leap, and Lane looked good this offseason. This should be a pretty solid group. The Commanders need McCaffrey to take a step forward. If that happens, this group suddenly looks much more formidable. Washington knows what it's getting in McLaurin and has a pretty good idea of what Samuel will bring. Noah Brown was called upon to be the No. 2 receiver during the first half of last season, and he played well. Brown is Washington's biggest receiver and is excellent at drawing flags. Whether he starts or not, he will play significant snaps. This article originally appeared on Commanders Wire: Commanders training camp preview: Wide receivers

Jets' Sauce Gardner disrespected in ESPNs CB rankings

The New York Jets made Sauce Gardner the highest-paid cornerback in NFL history this week. General manager Darren Mougey inked Gardner to a four-year extension worth $120.4 million. The All-Pro CB will earn a league-leading $30.1 million on average per season. Coincidentally, ESPN released their cornerback position rankings after Gardner signed his extension. The list is the result of composite rankings, concluded by polling more than 70 anonymous coaches, executives, and scouts around the league. Gardner was arguably disrespected, coming in at No. 5, behind Pat Surtain II, Derek Stingley Jr., Denzel Ward, and Trent McDuffie. Gardner should have earned a top-three spot alongside Surtain II and Stingley Jr. "Gardner remains one of the more polarizing players in the league," ESPNs Jeremy Fowler summarized. "He reached superstardom as a rookie, wasting no time entering the conversation for the NFL's best cornerback. He made back-to-back All-Pro teams from 2022-23, but some evaluators have had problems with his play for the past two seasons." "Needs a bounce-back year in 2025," a veteran AFC personnel staffer said. "Lots of missed tackles and penalties and didn't make many plays last year. Too much, too soon and thought the NFL was easy." Gardner's Pro Football Focus defensive grade of 70.2 in 2024 was significantly lower than his 2022 (87.9) and 2023 (88.6) grades. PFF credited him with allowing 25 receptions on 47 targets for 391 yards and one touchdown. Those are stellar numbers for a cornerback tasked with covering No. 1 receivers every single week. Gardner was whistled with 10 penalties and 10 missed tackles. "The Jets are hoping their new defense, with coach Aaron Glenn and coordinator Steve Wilks asking him to play more man coverage, will bring out his best," Fowler concluded. "He'll be asked to do a lot after signing a four-year, $120.4-million extension this week." It'll be worth monitoring Gardner's usage and production in Glenn's defense this season. The league clearly believes he needs a bounce-back year to fully reform his reputation. The full top-10 cornerback rankings can be found below: 10. Seahawks CB Devon Witherspoon 9. Eagles CB Quinyon Mitchell 8. Bears CB Jaylon Johnson 7. Panthers CB Jaycee Horn 6. Patriots CB Christian Gonzalez 5. Jets CB Sauce Gardner 4. Chiefs CB Trent McDuffie 3. Browns CB Denzel Ward 2. Texans CB Derek Stingley Jr. 1. Broncos CB Patrick Surtain II This article originally appeared on Jets Wire: ESPN: Jets' Sauce Gardner disrespected in positional rankings list

Dougie Bedinger using autism journey to inspire others after parents told he'd never play sports

When Dougie Bedinger was just a few days old, his parents were told he'd never play sports. Not only has he overcome the odds, but he's now helping to inspire others. It's a familiar sound of summer. Dougie Bedinger plays travel ball with the Rhino Sports Academy in Shorewood. "It's pretty good. I've played with one of my teammates for years," he said. "It's pretty exciting just to be able to show up every weekend and know who he is and what he's gone through and being able to compete with peers who are trying to fight for going to college and looking at scholarships, and him being included is pretty cool to watch," Doug Bedinger said. Doug, who is Dougie's father, mentioned all that his son has gone through. Dougie was born with a heart condition that required multiple surgeries in the first few weeks of his life. "It was obviously tough to see your child two days old, laying there, hooked up to every machine that you can see, thinking what's going to happen, if we're even going to have him around," he said. The need for those surgeries was due to a genetic disorder. Part of his 22nd chromosome is missing. It would eventually lead to Dougie being diagnosed with autism. "My mom antenna was up. We got him tested and the rest is history. I actually felt a sense of relief when he got diagnosed with autism because I finally knew what was going on, and we had a path that we could follow in school and everything, and I knew he would be fully supported," Mary Bedinger said. "I didn't let that stop him or us from doing what he wanted to do. We've never hidden his defects or his autism from anybody. It is what is, and we just kind of work with it," Doug said. On the field, Dougie is just one of the guys, playing the game he loves, pitching a little, and playing first base as well. "I just like to throw, throw hard. I just love baseball," he said. "When he walks on that field, you can see it. You don't have to ask questions, you don't have to do anything. You can just see it in his eyes, he puts that baseball uniform on, and he's ready to go," Coach Brian Dewalt said. "Just to see him love something so much in life, that's all we could ask for," Mary said. "We're extremely proud of him, again embracing his autism. That's what I'm most proud of is that he's not afraid to be who he is." Dougie recently embraced his autism when he got the opportunity to design a glove for Chicago-based Wilson in connection with Autism Speaks. "They invited us to the Wilson headquarters in Chicago. Dougie got the big league experience. He went in. They showed us around the faciilty. We sat down with their glove designer. He was awesome. They hashed everything out on what he wanted. He actually did the first baseman's mitt and a pitcher's glove as well," Doug said. "It was scary at first. Then I was pretty nervous, and then they put on the school website holding my gloves up," Dougie said. His teammates weren't the only ones who liked it. Wilson sells the glove on their website, and Detroit Tigers first baseman Spencer Torkelson showed off his love for Dougie's glove on Instagram. Dougie wants to keep showing off his skills playing the game he loves. How did that opportunity with Wilson come about? Mary actually wrote a letter to the company's president, Tom Hackett. He read it, loved the idea, and the rest is history.
