Liverpool remember Jota before first Anfield game

BBC News04-08-2025
Liverpool paid tribute to Diogo Jota in their first match at Anfield since the late forward's death. The 28-year-old Portugal international died in a car crash in Spain along with his brother Andre Silva, 25, in July. The Reds played Athletic Bilbao in a double header of pre-season friendlies on Monday, with games at 17:00 and 20:00 BST.Liverpool legend Phil Thomson and Athletic president Jon Uriarte brought wreaths out on to the pitch and laid them on the edge of the six-yard box before the opening game. The billboards around Anfield read 'Rest in Peace Diogo Jota and Andre Silva - You'll Never Walk Alone', while fans sang about Jota.Reds supporters also held up flags and banners remembering their number 20 - a number that has been retired by the club this summer - and they, as well as both sides, stood to applaud as the game against Bilbao was stopped in the 20th minute.
Jota scored 65 goals in 182 appearances for the Reds, helping them win the Premier League, FA Cup and League Cup, following his arrival from Wolves in 2020."I know that you will want to pay your tributes before, during and after the games, and I know that we will hear his song ringing out throughout the evening," said Reds boss Arne Slot in his match programme notes."It has been a tough time for everyone connected with the club, but especially for Diogo's family, his wife, his children and friends."We cannot imagine the pain that they have been going through, and the club will continue to give them all the support they can going forward. We will always carry him with us in our hearts, in our thoughts, wherever we go."Diogo's passing has had a big impact on us all, but what has been so important has been the love and care shown from the football world, and in particular of course the Liverpool FC community."The Reds play Crystal Palace in the Community Shield at Wembley on Sunday, 10 August, and open the Premier League season at Anfield against Bournemouth on Friday, 15 August.

I'm the Scottish star who downed Liverpool at Wembley but have been poached by Northern Ireland

Irvine youngster Justin Devenny slammed in the winner for Crystal Palace in the Charity Shield win against Liverpool Scotland may have missed out on Justin Devenny but the Crystal Palace star wasn't going to make the same mistake from the spot at Wembley. ‌ The former Kilmarnock academy kid slammed in the winning penalty for the Eagles as they shocked Liverpool to win the Charity Shield on the back of their incredible FA Cup triumph over Man City back in May. ‌ And it added another chapter to the sensational story of this youngster from Irvine. ‌ Devenny has completed a remarkable rise from the depths of Scottish football to the very pinnacle of the English game – and been poached by Northern Ireland in the process. The 21-year-old had a spell at Broomhill in the Lowland League when part of the Rugby Park ranks and then joined Airdrie in League One before being spotted by Palace's eagle-eyed Scottish scouts. The £150,000 shock move down south led to him impressing with the Under-23s before breaking into the first team – where he made 23 appearances last term on his way to picking up a historic FA Cup winner's medal. Devenny was at it again on Sunday, sticking up his hand to take the crucial fifth spot kick. And he didn't disappoint as he found the net to spark wild celebrations. Devenny had nerves of steel – and he revealed his grit was forged in the lower leagues in Scotland. ‌ The youngster's only other spot kick in his pro career came in Airdrie's 6-5 shootout win against Hamilton in 2023 to escape the third tier and claim a place in the Championship. Devenny said: 'I've taken one professional penalty, which was in the play-off final for Airdrie three years ago. 'It wasn't quite this, there were a few thousand there. But it's the same thing at the end of the day, taking a penalty. Did I score that one? Of course!' ‌ Devenny has always believed he could crack the big time – and had no doubts stepping up in front of 82,000 fans at Wembley. He said: 'I was confident and I believe in myself. I put my name down before. I didn't have to take a penalty, but I wanted to. ‌ 'I wanted to be the fifth one, I wanted to be the one that scored and win it. "He (manager Oliver Glasner) was asking who wanted to take a penalty and I said: 'I will take one' 'I was quite happy that it was in front of the Liverpool fans, you are going to get the abuse and the noise – but it is just about staying in the zone. ‌ 'Thankfully I scored, the emotions were great, I didn't know how to celebrate, it was almost too much to take in. It's a great feeling. 'I'm playing the sport I love for a living. These are the moments you want to be part of. 'Anyone would say yeah to have the chance to take the winning penalty in the Community Shield final. I was lucky enough to do it.' ‌ Devenny rammed home from the spot – and plunged another dagger in the hearts of the Tartan Army. The midfielder was whipped away by the Northern Irish from right under his horn nation's noses before he even got to Palace. Devenny came through the SFA performance school system but the summons came from over the water after an instant impact with Airdrie. ‌ Former St Johnstone boss Tommy Wright – who was part of the Northern Ireland youth set up – had been tracking the kid even longer after learning about his Belfast born granny. Scotland missed the boat and Palace stepped in soon after – with Devenny making his senior debut in the Nations League days in the same week he became the youngster scorer for the Eagles in the top flight with his strike against Aston Villa. The midfielder's career has started to soar and admitted he has no regrets at flying over the Irish Sea. Devenny said: 'Northern Ireland showed trust in me. It was an easy enough decision for me although I am Scottish – you can hear it in my voice – I have really enjoyed my time with Northern Ireland. They showed that trust.'

Alexander Isak dealt fresh reality check as Liverpool transfer hits new hurdle

Newcastle have been told that they need to sign two new strikers if they are to let Alexander Isak leave - further denting his hopes of securing a transfer to Liverpool Alan Shearer insists Newcastle need two new strikers - not one - before they even consider letting Alexander Isak go as the player's hopes of moving to Liverpool continue to dwindle. ‌ The Swede expressed a desire to explore his options away from St James' Park several weeks ago and the Reds came forward as a buyer. They saw their opening £110million bid swiftly rejected by the Magpies, who have missed out on a number of their summer targets. ‌ In an effort to plug any gap that may have been left Newcastle went after Benjamin Sesko, only to see Manchester United swoop in and win the race for his signature. Yoane Wissa is also a target but Shearer has made it clear that Newcastle need two new frontmen. ‌ The exit of Callum Wilson, who was allowed to leave the north east when his contract expired, means there is no back-up for Isak. That has led their record goalscorer to underline the need for two new strikers to come in. He said on the BBC: "One way or another they have to resolve it, but that won't be easy. Isak clearly wants to leave St James' Park and join Liverpool, but he cannot be sold if they don't get anyone in to replace him. "It's not just one new striker Newcastle need, either. Callum Wilson moved on earlier in the summer so the reality is that if they don't get two centre-forwards in, Isak does not go anywhere. That is still a possible scenario and, if he is still at Newcastle when the window closes at the start of September, things get interesting because he will want to play - he could be playing for his World Cup place with Sweden at next summer's finals." Isak is currently not allowed to train with the first-team squad as Eddie Howe and the club take a firm stance over the player's future. Newcastle begin their Premier League season at Aston Villa with their manager admitting he is unlikely to feature due to the current state of affairs. Shearer claims that the major deals to have taken place in the top flight have set a precedent when it comes to figures. Several midfielders have moved for the £100m mark - making Isak notably more valuable in today's market. He added: "In recent years we have seen Enzo Fernandez, Declan Rice and Jack Grealish go for around £100m so, if that is the bar, they are never going to get Isak - a 25-year-old striker who has scored 44 Premier League goals across the past two seasons - for £110m." Alan Shearer TEARS into Newcastle as he offers scathing verdict on the club and their transfer window - and names the two stars they should sign if £150m Alexander Isak joins Liverpool

Newcastle legend Alan Shearer has hit out at the club over their approach to this summer's transfer window. The Magpies have endured a disappointing summer having been rejected by the likes of Bryan Mbeumo, Joao Pedro, Matheus Cunha, Marc Guehi and James Trafford. Benjamin Sesko added to the list last week when he opted to join Manchester United from RB Leipzig instead. Meanwhile, Newcastle's all-time record signing Alexander Isak's future remains in the air with the wantaway striker attempting to force through a move to Premier League champions Liverpool. Shearer has delivered a sctahing verdict on his former club, writing in his BBC Sport column: 'So far, Newcastle's pre-season has been a nightmare. There is no other way of describing it. 'They have had a disastrous transfer window, missing out on every one of their top targets they went for, and on top of that they have got Alexander Isak's situation hanging over them as they get ready for the opening weekend.' He added: 'Newcastle went into the summer with no chief executive or sporting director, which I find amazing. They knew Darren Eales was stepping down as chief executive last September - 11 months ago - and Paul Mitchell left as sporting director at the end of June. 'I don't know why they haven't appointed anyone yet or if that has hindered them in the transfer market, because I am not inside the club, but from the outside it is not a good look. 'It's a mess, and it begs the question about who has making the big decisions.' Newcastle are keen on Brentford striker Yoane Wissa to fill the potential void left by Isak, with Daily Mail Sport revealing last week that a deal is expected to happen. Ollie Watkins is also among the club's potential targets, and Alan Shearer believes bringing in both the Aston Villa forward and Wissa would represent good business for Newcastle. Sherer wrote: 'If they are available, Brentford's Yoane Wissa and Aston Villa's Ollie Watkins are proven Premier League strikers and probably the best-case scenario from Newcastle's point of view. 'At the same time, I appreciate fans of those clubs won't like their centre-forwards being linked with moves away, the same way Newcastle supporters feel right now. 'Wissa's situation, in particular, sounds very similar to Isak's. It just shows you that this is something that happens in football all the time, and of course it is frustrating when you are on the wrong end of it.' Newcastle have added to their squad with the signings of Anthony Elanga, Aaron Ramsdale and Antonito Cordero. AC Milan defender Malick Thiaw is also on the verge of joining after the clubs agreed a package of around £34.3m Newcastle will open their Premier League campaign with a trip to Aston Villa on Saturday afternoon.
