Perlis Raja Muda marks 25 years of leadership with MAIPs
The Perlis Islamic Religious and Malay Customs Council (MAIPs) issued a statement today honouring His Royal Highness' contributions, including humanitarian missions, educational partnerships, and religious diplomacy efforts.
'His work has had a lasting impact, particularly in strengthening the zakat and waqf management systems and enhancing the role of mosques as community hubs. Under His Royal Highness' leadership, MAIPs has emerged as a progressive and authoritative religious institution. His leadership is a symbol of a monarchy that is close to the people and visionary in developing Perlis,' read the statement.
Recently, Tuanku Syed Faizuddin Putra led MAIPs' humanitarian missions to Kenya and Rwanda, establishing collaborations with international Islamic education institutions. Key initiatives include the introduction of UniSIRAJ (Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin International Islamic University) and the promotion of Islamic humanitarian values.
MAIPs commemorated the milestone during the Takrim 25 Tahun Pemasyhuran ceremony, coinciding with a consultative dialogue on the state's Islamic affairs direction for 2026-2030. The event highlighted His Royal Highness' dedication to guiding the ummah, upholding religion, and serving Perlis.
A trilingual poetry performance titled *Ungkap Kata Puji Mahkota – حملة المدحِ* was held as part of the celebration. During the dialogue, Tuanku Syed Faizuddin Putra reaffirmed his commitment to advancing Islamic affairs in Perlis, ensuring harmony, knowledge, and prosperity through an integrated approach.
'This Takrim ceremony not only reflects on His Royal Highness' 25-year leadership journey but also serves as a renewed pledge to continue the struggle for blessings, justice, and the well-being of the ummah,' said MAIPs.
Tuanku Syed Faizuddin Putra was officially installed as Raja Muda of Perlis on October 12, 2000, following his father's proclamation as Raja of Perlis earlier that year.
Since then, he has served as heir to the throne and MAIPs president, advising on Islamic and Malay customary matters. - Bernama

Budget 2026 to focus on welfare of people
PUTRAJAYA: Budget 2026 will prioritise public welfare while addressing deep-rooted economic challenges, said Second Finance Minister Datuk Seri Amir Hamzah Azizan. Speaking at the opening of Budget 2026 consultation session in Putrajaya yesterday, he said the government remains committed to pushing through essential reforms, even if they are unpopular in the short term. 'Fixing a broken economic structure is not easy. Some policies may be unpopular but they are necessary to deliver long-term benefits to the people.' He said this would be the first budget aligned with the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP), and it would revolve around three pillars – raising the ceiling, raising the floor and improving governance. Amir said raising the development ceiling would enhance Malaysia's economic competitiveness and attract strategic investments, especially in high-growth sectors such as semiconductors, energy transition and the Islamic economy. He said boosting household incomes and easing the cost of living would also remain top priorities. On strengthening the floor, Amir said the government would focus on improving public services, particularly in education and healthcare, while driving growth through digitalisation and artificial intelligence. He said fiscal reforms, including subsidy rationalisation, would not come at the people's expense. Citing examples, he said targeted electricity and diesel subsidies have been introduced without burdening most Malaysians. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said Budget 2026 would reflect the aims of the 13MP by expanding strategic investments and improving essential services, especially for low-income groups. 'Since we've launched the 13MP, Budget 2026 must support its first year of implementation. That means raising both the ceiling and the floor.' He added that while the ceiling is intended to stimulate economic activity and investment, the floor ensures stronger public services and income security, both central to the government's reform drive. More than 300 participants from the public and private sectors, including economists, NGOs and international organisations attended the consultation session. Budget 2026 is scheduled to be tabled in the Dewan Rakyat on Oct 10.

Chip sector may dodge tariff shock
Industry unlikely to be hit hard as most firms already US-based, says PM PUTRAJAYA: Malaysia's semiconductor industry is unlikely to be severely affected by the revised tariffs announced by the United States, says Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. The Prime Minister said Malaysia was grateful to secure a 19% tariff rate following recent negotiations, which is a relatively favourable outcome compared to neighbouring countries. Anwar added that the positive outcome could also possibly be due to the country's success in mediating the Thailand-Cambodia conflict. 'Tariff concerns, particularly in the semiconductor industry, have caused significant unease recently. 'Previously, these were mostly exempted. 'However, most of these companies are US-based or already have commitments to continue their investments and production in the US, so they won't be severely affected,' he said in his speech during the 2026 Budget Consultation Council at the Finance Ministry here yesterday. However, Anwar said there are some exceptions such as Infineon, a German semiconductor manufacturer that mainly caters to the needs of Germany and Europe, as well as other countries. 'So, we're monitoring the situation,' said Anwar. Earlier, US President Donald Trump announced sweeping new tariffs on many countries, with plans to impose 100% tariffs on semiconductors imported from countries that do not produce, or do not plan to produce, chips within the United States. Reportedly, only companies that have invested in or are building chip-manufacturing facilities in the United States would be exempt. On the event, Anwar said in his closing speech the 2026 Budget will be adjusted to align with the larger framework of the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP), which stresses the importance of 'raising both the ceiling and the floor', which illustrates the emphasis on inclusive growth while upholding good governance. 'We cannot talk about growth and investment without also addressing the lower end ... which is the floor. 'Inflation won't simply go away; prices will rise gradually. But if wages rise proportionately or higher, the cost of living burden will be less painful than what many are experiencing now,' he said. Finance Minister II Datuk Seri Amir Hamzah Azizan also reiterated that the 2026 Budget will be formulated to align with the objectives of the 13MP, with a strong focus on accelerating high-growth sectors such as the semiconductor industry, energy transition initiatives, and the Islamic economy. The government, said Amir Hamzah, will outline key measures that will produce inclusive growth. 'These include the semiconductor industry, energy transition initiatives, and the Islamic economy, all of which will continue to receive strong government backing. 'I am confident that the many industry representatives present today will be able to contribute constructive proposals.' The engagement session was attended by more than 300 participants from the private sector, chambers of commerce, non-governmental organisations, economists, industry players, and civil servants. According to Parliament's meeting agenda, the 2026 Supply Bill (Budget) is scheduled to be tabled in October. Amir Hamzah added that the government will continue to empower micro, small and medium enterprises as well as start-ups to become producers of products and services proudly labelled 'Made by Malaysia'. The minister said the digital and artificial intelligence (AI) agenda will also remain a key focus area, in line with efforts to foster a culture of innovation and drive value-based economic growth. On a separate matter, Anwar also signalled his support to raise tobacco tax following calls from certain quarters to end the decade-long moratorium on excise duty hikes. 'I agree with the spirit of that proposal. I myself not only do not smoke, but also fully support anti-smoking campaigns,' said Anwar. The last major increase in tobacco excise duty was in 2015, when the government raised it by 42.8%. Tobacco taxes have remained unchanged since then. On July 31, the Prime Minister announced that pro-health taxes will be expanded to cover tobacco, vape and alcohol products. Anwar stressed the need to handle health risks, stressing that it is not solely for tax revenue.

PM Anwar condemns hooliganism in sports, stresses unity
KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has firmly stated that hooliganism and violence have no place in sports, especially football. He stressed that sports should unite Malaysians rather than divide them through unruly behaviour. 'Everyone supports their team or their state or their province, but that does not allow them to create chaos and tolerate hooliganism. So we'll make a difference. Don't import that culture of hooliganism in sports as you read and see and watch on television from the experience of other countries,' he said during the groundbreaking ceremony of Olympic House. Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh was also present at the event. Anwar acknowledged that passion in sports is natural but should not justify actions against sportsmanship. 'People cry when they win and they cry when they lose. You know, which means you cannot deny the passion. But it does not warrant them to take actions which run contrary to the spirit of sportsmanship,' he added. He called for greater tolerance, stating that intolerance contradicts the unifying nature of sports. Anwar highlighted how sportsmanship uniquely bridges racial divides in Malaysia, unlike politics. 'There's no language in politics for sportsmanship. Politics is where you kill one another — I mean, not literally, hopefully. But only in sports, not in culture, not in the arts, not in economic rivalry,' he said. He emphasised that sportsmanship means striving to win while accepting defeat gracefully. Reflecting on Malaysia's history, Anwar recalled how sports like football and badminton united people during tense times. 'It doesn't matter whether he's Malay, Chinese, Dayak or Indian — we consider them all Malaysian. And that's what I feel we need to promote. But of course, we also need to excel,' he said. Jokingly, he added that Malaysia expects at least one Olympic gold medal under Minister Hannah Yeoh and OCM President Tan Sri Mohamad Norza Zakaria. Sharing advice for his grandchildren, Anwar stressed the importance of accepting losses with dignity. 'I said, I told them that's not the spirit. The spirit of course, is to win, but the sportsmanship, the term sportsmanship is such a value-laden term. You do try your best, you try and excel, but you accept it (loss) in a sportsman's fashion,' he concluded. - Bernama
