Defamation case: Lucknow court grants bail to Rahul Gandhi

LUCKNOW: A Lucknow court on Tuesday granted bail to Leader of Opposition and Congress MP Rahul Gandhi after he appeared in a defamation case filed over his purported remarks on Army personnel, his lawyer said.
The case relates to alleged defamatory remarks against Indian soldiers made during his Bharat Jodo Yatra in 2022, Gandhi's counsel, advocate Pranshu Agarwal, said.
Following his appearance, the court released him on bail, the lawyer added. The bail was granted after Gandhi furnished a bail bond and sureties as directed by the court.
Gandhi appeared in a courtroom full of lawyers. He was taken to the judge's chamber, where the formalities of filing the bond and sureties took place.
The Congress leader was summoned as an accused after the court took cognisance of the defamation complaint.
Gandhi had earlier moved the high court seeking relief but did not succeed.
He came to court accompanied by the party's state unit president Ajay Rai and in-charge Avinash Pande.
'He (Gandhi) is scheduled to attend the court hearing and would return to Delhi later in the day. He is likely to come to Uttar Pradesh again to visit his constituency Raebareli over the next few days,' Rai told PTI before the hearing.
Security was heightened along the route of his travel and in and around the court premises.
The defamation complaint was filed by one Uday Shankar Srivastava, a retired director of the Border Roads Organisation (equivalent to the rank of colonel in the Army).
The complaint states that on December 16, 2022, Gandhi, while addressing various media personnel and the public during the Bharat Jodo Yatra, mentioned the clash between the Indian Army and the Chinese Army on the Arunachal Pradesh border on December 9, 2022, and said that "people will ask what all about Bharat Jodo Yatra, but will not ask even once about the beating of our soldiers by Chinese soldiers".
The complainant alleged that his sentiments were hurt by Gandhi's statement about the alleged beating of Indian soldiers by Chinese soldiers.
On February 11, the special court ordered Gandhi to be summoned on charges of defamation.

Steps on to take number of 'Lakhpati Didis' to 2 crore by Aug 15: Chouhan

Nearly 1.5 crore women have already become 'Lakhpati Didis' in India and the Centre is making efforts to raise the figure to 2 crore by August 15, Union Agriculture and Farmers' Welfare Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan has said. 'Lakhpati Didi' refers to a woman member of a Self-Help Group (SHG) who earns an income of ₹1 lakh or more per year. Mr. Chouhan on Saturday (July 19, 2025) visited the Indian Council of Agricultural Research - Directorate of Groundnut Research in Junagadh town of Gujarat, where he reviewed its activities and interacted with farmers and Lakhpati Didis of SHGs, the Press Information Bureau (PIB) said in a release. In his address, Mr. Chouhan said Prime Minister Narendra Modi has taken a resolve to make every woman a Lakhpati Didi. "Why should any woman remain poor? This campaign is being run across India. Till now, 1.5 crore women have already become Lakhpati Didis and my department is constantly taking steps to make 2 crore women Lakhpati Didis by August 15," he said. In Junagadh, there are women who are already earning more than ₹10 lakh per year, the Minister pointed out. "Women living in rural areas have proven that they can do wonders if they are provided with opportunity, training and bank linkage. These women are the true torchbearers of 'Vocal for Local'. I am confident that these women will build a 'Viksit Bharat' (developed India) as envisioned by PM Modi," said the Minister, who also handles the rural development portfolio. Mr. Chouhan lauded women for their contribution in this regard. "Keep pushing forward with courage. PM Modi himself stands with you to ensure all possible support. Plans are underway to increase women's participation in the industrial sector. The hard work of women will help build a Viksit Bharat as envisioned by the PM," he said. Stating that agriculture is still the backbone of Indian economy and for him, the Union minister said serving farmers is equal to worshipping God. "I don't just sit in my Delhi office. Instead, I visit agricultural fields, interact with farmers and try to provide a solution to their problems. Our PM also gives highest priority to agriculture," Mr. Chouhan said in his address. Earlier on Saturday (July 19, 2025), Mr. Chouhan offered prayers at the famous Somnath temple in Gir Somnath district and visited the Devaliya Safari Park near Gir National Park at Sasan.

‘Not against Gandhi family': Tharoor justifies article criticising Emergency

KOCHI: Congress MP Shashi Tharoor on Saturday attempted to justify his controversial article criticizing the 1975 Emergency while clarifying that he 'said nothing against the Gandhi family'. Tharoor, who invited the wrath of senior party leaders through his controversial article, appeared to have mellowed down from his earlier stance. 'What I have written now was just similar to my writings in 1997, and has said nothing against the Gandhi family. I've (only) mentioned some individuals and incidents that happened at that time (Emergency),' the senior Congress leader told reporters here on the sidelines of a function organised by the Council for Community Co-operation at TDM Hall. Earlier, in his sharply worded article, which appeared on certain online platforms, Tharoor termed the 21-month Emergency (1975–77) a 'dark period' in India's democratic history and accused former prime minister Indira Gandhi of authoritarian overreach. He went further, calling out her son Sanjay Gandhi for 'terrible atrocities' such as forced sterilisation and the use of violence in rural areas. Tharoor wrote that the period 'severely tested the fundamental guarantees of equality, liberty, and fraternity' and left a lasting scar on Indian politics. Tharoor also defended his praising the Narendra Modi government over Operation Sindoor, saying that one has to prioritise national security over a political party. 'When people like me say that we respect our parties, we have certain values and convictions that keep us in our parties, but we need to cooperate with other parties in the interest of national security,' Tharoor said, while replying to a query. '...sometimes the parties feel disloyal to them. To my mind, the nation comes first. Parties are a means of making the nation better. So to my mind, whichever party you belong to, the objective of that party is to create a better India in its own way'.

INDIA bloc to corner Centre over Operation Sindoor, Bihar SIR , Trump's ‘ceasefire' claim

NEW DELHI: Ahead of the Monsoon session of Parliament, leaders of 24 Opposition parties came together on Saturday evening and vowed to corner the NDA government on a number of key issues, including the recent Pahalgam attack, Operation Sindoor, the special intensive revision (SIR) of Bihar electoral rolls and US President Donald Trump's repeated claims of brokering a 'ceasefire' between India and Pakistan. The virtual meeting was attended by several senior leaders, including Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, parliamentary party leader Sonia Gandhi, Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi, NCP (SP) supremo Sharad Pawar, Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Uddhav Thakarey, TMC leader Abhishek Banerjee, J&K CM Omar Abdullah and Jharkhand CM Hemant Soren, Tejashwi Yadav (RJD), Ram Gopal Yadav (SP), Tiruchi Siva (DMK) M A Baby of CPI(M), D Raja (CPI), and CPI(ML)'s Dipankar Bhattacharya. Briefing reporters, Congress' deputy leader in Rajya Sabha Pramod Tiwari said though several issues came up in the course of the meeting, the bloc has unanimously decided to focus on eight key issues. The leaders expressed grave concern over the government's failure in bringing the terrorists behind the Pahalgam attack to justice and its 'silence' on repeated claims made by US President Donald Trump in brokering a 'ceasefire' between India and Pakistan, Tiwari said. The leaders also deliberated on the revision of electoral rolls in Bihar that 'threatens the voting rights of people', he said. 'There is an undeclared Emergency that has been imposed and voting rights are being snatched away.' Tiwari said the opposition parties would expect the Prime Minister to be present in Parliament and respond to the issues raised in the House, asserting that, 'Parliament is more important than travelling abroad'. Several parties raised the issue of 'atrocities' against SC, ST, women and minorities, inflation, farmers' distress and the delimitation excercise. According to sources, Rahul Gandhi spoke about the Pahalgam attack and Modi government's foreign policy failure.
