Amritsar: Taking cognisance of complaints over a state-organised Sufi-singing event in Srinagar to mark the martyrdom of Guru Tegh Bahadur, Akal Takht officiating jathedar Giani Kuldip Singh Gargaj on Saturday issued summons to Punjab minister Harjot Singh Bains and the director of the state languages department, Jaswant Singh, to appear before the five Sikh high priests at Akal Takht on Aug 1 to give a clarification on the issue.
The summon came even as the minister had already announced to appear barefoot at the Akal Takht in a gesture of humility.
Giani Gargaj slammed the continued silence of the minister and director, stating that despite the passage of considerable time, they neither offered any clarification nor apology for the controversial event that hurt Sikh sentiments. He said their refusal to respond reflected a disturbing disregard for community emotions and warned those holding constitutional positions carried an even greater responsibility to uphold public trust.
The Punjab languages department recently organised an event in Srinagar to mark the martyrdom day of the ninth Sikh master, Guru Tegh Bahadur. During the programme, Punjabi singer Bir Singh performed. Video footage showed attendees, including women, dancing to his songs—an act that drew widespread criticism from the
Sikh community
for its perceived irreverence.
The latest controversy comes at a time when the AAP govt in Punjab and Akal Takht are already embroiled in a war of words over events planned in the state to mark the martyrdom.

Bir Singh appeared at Akal Takht on Saturday, met Giani Gargaj, and tendered an apology. However, a decision on his apology is yet to be announced by the Akal Takht.
Giani Gargaj condemned the event, stating it was the first time in history that a programme dedicated to the martyrdom of a guru began with singing, dancing, and entertainment—something he described as completely unacceptable. "The Aug 1 gathering of the Sikh clergy will deliberate on panthic and religious matters, and both Harjot Singh and Jaswant Singh have been summoned to present their side," he said.
He added the apology submitted by singer Bir Singh—against whom several complaints were also received—will be reviewed and considered by Sikh clergy during the upcoming meeting.
Bagicha Singh, in charge of the Akal Takht Secretariat, informed that official summons have been issued to Harjot Singh and Jaswant Singh, directing them to appear and present their explanations.
Bains: 'I seek forgiveness'
Soon after being summoned by the Akal Takht, Bains put out a post on his X account, stating that he humbly accepted the command of Akal Takht.
He explained that the languages department recently organised the event in Srinagar during which prominent intellectuals and scholars shared Gurmat insights. He confirmed that Bir Singh was invited to perform at the event.
Bains acknowledged that due to an unintentional oversight by the organisers, certain incidents occurred during the programme. "As a Sikh and a minister, I seek forgiveness," he wrote. "As a humble Sikh, I accept the command of Sri Akal Takht Sahib and will appear barefoot to present myself. Acknowledging our moral responsibility, I will be bound to obey every directive issued henceforth," he said.

CM demands over ₹1 cr. recovery from Kejriwal over ‘fake' phansi-ghar

Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Wednesday called for a thorough inquiry and demanded that the ₹1.04 crore spent by the previous Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government on a British-era 'fake' 'phansi-ghar' (execution room) at the Delhi Assembly be recovered from former Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal. Terming the move a 'deception of people' and an 'insult to martyrs', Ms. Gupta said the installation was based on no official documentation and essentially a repurposed 'tiffin room' falsely portrayed as a historic phansi-ghar to mislead the public. During a discussion in the Assembly, she said an FIR should be registered against Mr. Kejriwal and the structure be removed before August 25. Noting that the phansi-ghar was inaugurated on August 9, 2022, Assembly Speaker Vijender Gupta said the 1911-12 building map accessed from the National Archives clearly marked the space as a tiffin room. 'I challenge AAP to find one historian who can verify it was an execution room,' he said. 'Distortion of heritage' 'Such tiffin rooms are in other offices too. You will know about them if you conduct an inquiry. Without any documents, it was declared as an execution room. We are ashamed of this. He [Kejriwal] had a disease of lying,' the CM said, terming it a 'distortion of heritage'. AAP legislator Sanjeev Jha said many execution rooms from the British era are not officially recorded and accused the ruling party of 'standing with the British'.

Clarify land pooling policy: HC to Punjab

The Punjab government on Wednesday submitted in the Punjab and Haryana High Court that the recently introduced Land Pooling Policy, 2025, would be kept on hold till the next date of hearing, i.e. Thursday. The court was hearing a writ petition that challenged the Punjab government's land pooling policy introduced in June this year. The court asked the State government to clarify whether an Environmental Impact Assessment had been carried out before notifying the Land Pooling Policy, 2025. The court, in its interim order, directed the government to inform the court if there was any provision in the policy for the rehabilitation of the landless labourers and others who do not own any land but are dependent on the land for their sustenance. Petitioner Gurdeep Singh Gill had submitted that the policy was notified without carrying out the necessary environmental and social impact assessment, which is an essential prerequisite for the acquisition of land under Sections 4 to 8 of the Right to Fair Compensation and Transparency in Land Acquisition, Rehabilitation and Resettlement Act, 2013. The petitioner, a resident of Phagla village in Ludhiana district, owns 6 acres of land, which was allotted to his father as a displaced person in lieu of their land in Lyallpur district in Pakistan. The petitioner argued that they have invested and have made improvements to the land, which is now fertile but has been included in the policy. Mr. Gill also contended that there is no provision for providing compensation at the time of acquisition, and only an annual meagre livelihood allowance would be paid. The ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has hit out at the Opposition parties for spreading 'misleading propaganda' against the State government's policy, with party leaders describing it as 'farmer-friendly'. The Punjab Cabinet in June gave its nod to the policy and asserted that not a single yard will be forcibly acquired from the owners.

5% dip yet Sikhs remain 3rd most targeted group in US, reveals FBI data

1 2 Bathinda: Sikhs continue to be the third most targeted group under religiously motivated hate crime in the US, after Jews and Muslims, says data released by FBI on Wednesday. The FBI released its annual report of hate crime statistics for 2024 on Aug 5, noting a drop of nearly 2% in the number of incidents, says the Sikh advocacy group, Sikh Coalition. The Coalition says 142 religiously motivated hate-crime victimizations against Sikhs have been reported — down from 150 in 2023 (a drop of 5.3%) and 198 in 2022 . Twenty-five anti Hindu crimes were also reported in the year. down from 32 the previous year. The same year, 1,938 crimes against Jews were recorded, down from 1,989 in 2023; so were 228 anti-Islamic crimes, down from 281 in 2023. The FBI began collecting data about more categories of religiously motivated hate crimes in 2015. Sikh Coalition says that hate remains an urgent policy priority in the United States and Sikhs remain disproportionately under threat. The data underscores the need for stronger initiatives by the federal government. It argues that FBI's hate crime data remains incomplete so long as hate crime reporting is not mandated and undertaken with serious care and standardized processes across the country. The Sikh Coalition and other leading civil rights organizations continue to document additional inaccuracies in hate crime reporting.
