Police arrested elementary teacher Andrew James McGann, 28, on Wednesday after he allegedly stabbed Cristen and Clinton Brink to death in Arkansas' Devil's Den State Park on Saturday.
Clinton, 43, and Cristen, 41, who had recently moved their family to the area, were on a hiking trail with two of their three daughters when they were randomly attacked, according to police.
McGann allegedly stabbed Clinton first, Arkansas State Police said at a press conference on Wednesday.
In her heartbreaking final move, Cristen took the girls to safety at the park before she turned around to be with her husband, leading to her death.
'The mother did not return all the way to the car with the kids,' state police Major Stacie Rhoads said at a news conference on Thursday.
'We believe that the mother took them to safety and then returned to help her husband.'
A hiker came upon the girls and got them off the trail before they found the parents' bodies, a preliminary police report said.
ASP arrived and found a trail of blood leading from the crime scene.
A witness then told cops that they saw someone coming out of the park with what appeared to be blood on his face, the report said.
The person then got into a black car and drove away, the witness said.

Together with another witness' account, investigators identified the suspect's vehicle as a black Kia stinger.
The car ended up leading to his arrest.
Following a five-day manhunt, McGann was located and arrested at Lupita's Beauty Salon and Barber Shop in Springdale, Arkansas.
Surveillance footage from the salon shows cops taking the barber's cape off McGann before he was put into cuffs mid-haircut.
Timeline of the murders
Clinton Brink, 43, and Cristen Brink, 43, were killed while hiking at Devil's Den State Park with their daughters. Below is a timeline of the case:
July 16 - The Brink family has their water service turned on after recently moving to Prairie Grove, Arkansas, according to Mayor David Falk.
July 26 - Clinton and Cristen are found dead on Devil's Den trail at around 2:30 pm after their two daughters ran to the visitor's center and said their parents were attacked.
July 27 - Police release the identities of the slain couple. Cops ask park visitors to check their pictures and footage from Saturday for possible images of the suspect.
July 28 - Autopsy results reveal the Brinks died from stab wounds. Arkansas State Police releases a sketch of a person of interest in the case.
July 29 - ASP releases a picture from a witness of the person of interest in the case.
July 30 - Andrew James McGann is arrested mid-haircut at Lupita's Beauty Salon and Barber Shop just before 5 pm.
August 1 - McGann appears in his first court appearance. His arraignment is scheduled for August 25.
Hairstylist Adriana Ruiz Avalos noticed two red flags the suspect made upon entering the building, including when he asked to keep his hair covering his face.
Court documents also noted McGann had cuts on his hands when he was arrested.
After he was arrested, McGann admitted to investigators that he killed the Brinks, police said.

COURT APPEARANCE
McGann, who has no known criminal history, appeared in court for the first time on Friday morning.
He wore a striped jail uniform and only spoke to confirm his name.
The alleged killer was granted a public defender and no bond ahead of his arraignment on August 25.
He was ordered not to contact the victims' families.
Police said the motive in the Brinks' murders remains a mystery.
The family had just moved to the area from South Dakota and didn't know McGann, officials said.
McGann had also recently moved to Arkansas from Oklahoma as he was set to teach third grade at an elementary school in the fall.
Statements from suspect's previous employers
Before he was arrested and charged with two counts of murder, Andrew James McGann worked as an elementary school teacher. Below are statements from some of the schools he was hired by:
Lewisville ISD
Lewisville ISD is aware of the recent arrest of a former teacher who was employed at Donald Elementary during the 2022-23 school year. The individual was placed on administrative leave in the spring of 2023 following concerns related to classroom management, professional judgment, and student favoritism. An internal investigation found no evidence of inappropriate behavior with students. The teacher resigned from the district in May 2023.
Our hearts are with the victims and all those affected by this tragic situation. The safety and well-being of our students remain our highest priority, and we are committed to supporting our school community during this time.
As this is an ongoing law enforcement matter, any additional questions should be directed to the investigating agency.
Broken Arrow Public Schools
The man who was arrested in Arkansas for the murders at Devil's Den State Park was a teacher for Broken Arrow Public Schools during the 23/24 school year. He was a 5th grade teacher at Spring Creek Elementary during the 23/24 school year and left of his own accord to work out of state.
As with all employees hired by the district, he was subjected to and passed the legally required background checks prior to being hired. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family affected by this unimaginable act of violence.
Sand Springs Public Schools
Sand Springs Public Schools is aware of the recent arrest of a former employee. Andrew McGann was employed at Sand Springs Public Schools from the summer of 2024 to May 2025. At the end of the 2024-25 school year, McGann resigned his position to move out of state.
The safety of our students and staff is our highest priority. Every employee undergoes a mandatory background check for the district when they are hired. Additionally, each teacher undergoes a background check for the Oklahoma State Department of Education. McGann passed all background checks.
While SSPS has not yet been contacted by authorities regarding this matter, the district has and will always comply with requests from law enforcement in any investigation.
Our hearts are with the family and loved ones who have suffered this tragic loss.
Springdale Public Schools
Springdale Public Schools can confirm that Andrew McGann was a teacher candidate hired for the upcoming school year, who has not yet begun employment with the district. This individual has not at any time come into contact with Springdale students or the families we serve. At this time, we cannot offer any additional information due to the ongoing investigation. At the appropriate time, additional information will be forthcoming. Our entire team extends our deepest condolences to the Brink family. Their children are especially in our thoughts and prayers
Washington County Prosecuting Attorney Brandon Carter said there's no evidence to suggest that McGann was targeting the young girls in his alleged attack on their parents, according to CNN.
'They absolutely protected those girls to their fullest extent, to the point that it cost them their lives,' Carter said.
'We're in awe of this mom and dad. We're also in awe of these girls.'

Four dead after medical plane crashes

Four people were killed when a medical transport plane crashed in northeastern Arizona on Tuesday. The plane, operated by CSI Aviation of Albuquerque, New Mexico, was en route to pickup a patient from a hospital when it crashed and caught fire near Chinle Airport at around 12.40pm. The Navajo Police Department Chinle District, Navajo EMS and Navajo Nation Fire and Rescue Services rushed to the scene, and all four people on board were pronounced dead. The victims have not yet been identified, but their next of kin have been notified about their untimely passing. In the meantime, all access to the Chinle Airport is closed as the investigation continues. The National Transportation Safety Board and the Federal Aviation Administration is also en route to probe what may have caused the fatal collision. 'This is a tragic loss to the families of those onboard and to the medical air and first responder community,' the Navajo Police Department said in a statement. 'We extend our deepest condolences to their family and loved ones during this time.'

‘We're not leaving': Border Patrol uses ‘Trojan Horse' unmarked truck to resume deportation raids

A group of masked Border Patrol agents leapt out of an unmarked commercial truck and arrested 16 people on Wednesday outside a Home Depot store in the Westlake section of Los Angeles, in an operation critics say violates a series of recent court rulings against the Trump administration. 'For those who thought immigration enforcement had stopped in Southern California, think again,' Acting U.S. Attorney Bill Essayli, whose district includes Los Angeles, wrote in a statement on X. 'The enforcement of federal law is not negotiable, and there are no sanctuaries from the reach of the federal government.' The raid, which officials later called Operation Trojan Horse, began around 6:45am, according to bystanders. A yellow Penske box truck reportedly approached day laborers in the parking lot of the store and someone asked for workers in Spanish. As a crowd gathered, the doors to the truck's trailer flew open and agents jumped out, chasing people through the parking lot. "This is the worst feeling ever," a day laborer who identified himself as Caesar told The Los Angeles Times of watching the raid. Critics said the raid violated a Friday ruling from the federal Ninth Circuit Court, which upheld a temporary restraining order barring Border Patrol and Immigration and Customs Enforcement from carrying out roving immigration raids solely on the basis of people's perceived ethnicity, language, location, or occupation. The ruling came after a lower court paused such raids in response to a lawsuit from immigrants and civil rights groups accusing federal agents of racial profiling during their immigration sweeps across the Los Angeles area, making arrests that included a U.S. citizen and a lawfully present day laborer outside a Home Depot. 'Border Patrol at a Home Depot in Los Angeles days after the 9th circuit affirmed a court order that purports to block this exact behavior,' David Bier, director of immigration studies at the libertarian Cato Institute think tank, wrote on Bluesky. 'They don't even know who they're chasing! This is insane. Send them all to jail.' The Department of Homeland Security believes that the MS-13 gang has a 'chokehold' on the area, part of the rationale for such 'highly optic immigration raids,' Matt Finn of Fox News, who embedded with agents for the Home Depot operation, reported on X. The Independent has contacted the Border Patrol, the Department of Homeland Security, and U.S. Attorney Bill Essayli's office for comment. 'Penske strictly prohibits the transportation of people in the cargo area of its vehicles under any circumstances,' Penske said in a statement on X. 'The company was not made aware that its trucks would be used in today's operation and did not authorize this. Penske will reach out to DHS and reinforce its policy to avoid improper use of its vehicles in the future.' The Border Patrol has raided the store parking lot before, and Wednesday's operation came as the agency continued to carry out operations across the Los Angeles area. 'Different day, different illegal aliens, same objective,' the Border Patrol's Gregory Bovino, commander of the multi-agency Operation At Large, wrote on X, sharing video of agents arresting men outside a car wash. 'We're on a mission here in Los Angeles. And we're not leaving until we accomplish our goals.' Los Angeles, which has one of the largest immigrant populations in the country, has been at the center of the Trump administration's unprecedented immigration crackdown. Federal officials sent National Guard troops and Marines to the city over the objection of local and state officials in the face of mass protests against federal raids. The Border Patrol has made use of rules allowing it to operate within 100 miles of any U.S. border to carry out large-scale raids across Los Angeles, Sacramento, and farm areas in the state's Central Valley.

Over €750,000 cannabis seized and two men (40s) arrested after growhouse discovered in Drogheda

More than €750,000 of cannabis plants were seized by gardaí, and two men (40s) were arrested after a search operation in Drogheda, Co Louth, on Tuesday. The search was conducted by gardaí attached to the Dublin Crime Response Team as part of an ongoing operation targeting the sale and supply of drugs. Advertisement The gardaí found a "large-scale cannabis cultivation factory" during the search, and cannabis plants with an estimated street value of more than €750,000 were seized. Two men in their 40s were arrested at the scene and are currently detained at garda stations in the north east of the country under Section 2 of the Criminal Justice (Drug Trafficking) Act, 1996. The drugs have been sent to Forensic Science Ireland for analysis, a garda statement said, and investigations are ongoing. Assistant Commissioner Cliona Richardson said that the discovery and dismantling of the "sophisticated cannabis cultivation operation will affect the ability of those involved to cause harm in our communities". "The investigation – led by the Dublin Crime Response Team under Operation Tara and assisted by local Gardaí in Drogheda – demonstrates An Garda Síochána's commitment to collaboratively target drug trafficking networks and related criminal activity occurring in and impacting not only Dublin but other Regions throughout the country.'
