Volvo CEO wants EU to cut 'unnecessary' auto tariffs to defuse Trump threat
Volvo Cars
urged the European Union to cut its 10% tariff on
American-made cars
, arguing that European automakers do not need protection from U.S. competitors, in an interview with Reuters on Thursday.
Brussels, along with representatives from the auto industry, has spent months trying to persuade Washington to lower its 27.5% tariff on imports of European cars.
"If Europe is for free trade, we should be the ones showing the way and going down to very low tariffs first,"
Hakan Samuelsson
said after the company reported second-quarter earnings.
U.S. President Donald Trump has threatened to raise tariffs on European Union auto imports to 30% from August 1, increasing pressure on the bloc to strike a deal.
Before Trump's tenure, the U.S. had a 2.5% tariff on European-made cars, while the EU had a 10% duty on vehicles imported from the U.S, which Samuelsson previously said was unfair.
"I think it's absolutely unnecessary, the European car industry definitely does not need to have any protection from American auto builders," he told Reuters.
Volvo Cars, majority-owned by China's
Geely Holding
, is one of the most exposed European automakers to U.S. tariffs as the bulk of its cars sold there are imported from Europe.
Volvo announced late Wednesday that it would start U.S. production in late 2026 of its best-selling model, the hybrid XC60 as a way to mitigate the tariffs.
Currently, its South Carolina plant only produces the Polestar 3 and electric vehicle model EX90 which has struggled to gain traction with U.S. consumers. Volvo has also started slimming down its product offering in the U.S., Reuters reported on Wednesday.
"These are the measures we have control over, rather than when it comes to tariffs we can only have an opinion like everybody else," Samuelsson said.

Windsurf raised $240 million and reached a valuation of $1.25 billion. It was later named among Forbes' top 50 AI companies globally. Google and OpenAI were both interested in acquiring Varun Mohan's startup, Windsurf, because of its breakthrough product, Cascade—an AI-native coding environment that allows developers to write, test, and refactor code using natural language. The tool had gained rapid adoption among developers and posed a potential shift in how software is built, making it a strategic asset in the race for dominance in agentic coding and AI-assisted development. OpenAI was close to acquiring Windsurf for $3 billion. However, its primary investor, Microsoft, raised concerns over possible overlaps with GitHub Copilot. As a result, the deal stalled midway. Varun Mohan then accepted Google's $2.4 billion offer. The agreement is not an acquisition. Activists Demand Solution to Water Problem in Ulwe Node
Navi Mumbai: Social activists from Ulwe have approached authorities regarding the critical water situation in their node. Led by Sachin Raje Yerunkar, activists including Chandrakant Bakalkar, Gajanan Jadhav, Sai Paikade, and Shashikant Kamble met Cidco officials, pressing their demand to address the urgent water crisis. The current water supply is insufficient for Ulwe's growing population, alleged the activists. Cidco said that plans are being charted out to supply additional water to cater to this node. Larger residential towers in sectors 8, 9, and 10 receive adequate water, whilst smaller societies struggle to get their quota. Ironically, societies in sector 9 were without water for six months, with irregular and inadequate govt tanker service. The high-rise zone in the hilly region of sector 17 and Javale village, under Cidco's jurisdiction, faces severe water shortages. Sectors 15, 16, and 17 experience distribution issues due to pipeline routing, and buildings near Bamandongri station lack water supply, said Yerunkar. The absence of a Master Balancing Tank (MBR) in Ulwe results in persistent low-pressure supply, with complete interruption during dam maintenance, said Bakalkar. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like American Investor Warren Buffett Recommends: 5 Books For Turning Your Life Around Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo The brief water supply duration fails to meet minimum requirements. The activists submitted proposals for immediate implementation and requested Cidco to develop a comprehensive water supply plan considering Ulwe's rapid development. A local resident, Dr Bhushan Patil, said that Cidco failed to live up to its promises for uninterrupted water supply. "How is Cidco letting permission for upcoming construction projects in the node when there's a vivid scarcity of water and no provision in place to supply drinking water to the existing population?" said Jadhav. As per sources, the population of this node crossed 2 lakh in the last few years, and more due to the commencement of suburban train services between Nerul and Uran.

The Epstein web: Return of the man who knew too much
Robert Maxwell's mysterious death at sea in 1991—with his body found floating near the Canary Islands—and later revelations of his cooperation with Israeli intelligence are part of the shadow legacy Ghislaine inherited. That she embedded herself so deeply into the Anglo-American elite without scrutiny for so long speaks not only to privilege, but to protection. Prince Andrew's entanglement is no longer a matter of speculation. His now-settled civil case with Virginia Giuffre, who accused him of abusing her as a minor, came with a multi-million-dollar payout and a permanently-damaged reputation. The photograph of him with Giuffre, Maxwell in the background, remains iconic—not just for what it shows, but for how it was denied. The prince's association with Epstein, even after Epstein's first conviction, and the disastrous BBC interview that followed, confirmed what many already feared: that the British establishment had, at best, turned a blind eye. At worst, it was complicit. Numerous observers, including former intelligence professionals, have long speculated that Epstein was a facilitator—creating honeypots, filming the powerful, and quietly handing over the results to interested parties. Former Israeli officer Ari Ben-Menashe and American whistleblowers have suggested Epstein's operation bore the hallmarks of classic compromat used for control or blackmail. Why else would such a man be funded, protected, and even after conviction be welcomed by the world's most influential people? Epstein's death in a high-security New York prison in 2019, officially ruled a suicide, though surveillance footage vanished and the guards reportedly slept through it, only deepened suspicions. It was the perfect ending for a man who knew too much. At first glance, Trump appears as just another name in Epstein's contact list who famously called Epstein 'a terrific guy' in 2002. But since Epstein's death, many within Trump's base have seized on the scandal as proof of a global elite network rotten to its core—a real-world echo of what the QAnon, the far-right conspiracy movement, claims about a secret cabal of child-abusing elites that Trump was chosen to expose. While neither Clinton nor Trump has faced charges over Epstein's activities, their documented ties continue to raise uncomfortable questions. To many on the right, Epstein became symbolic of a decadent ruling class—jet-setting, untouchable and predatory. The fact that Epstein's ties to Clinton were longer and deeper than to Trump has not gone unnoticed. Nor has the fact that Epstein's prosecution accelerated under the Trump-era department of justice.
