Rs 11.26 crore snakebite death scam unearthed in Madhya Pradesh's Seoni, land of Jungle Book's Kaa
BHOPAL: In Madhya Pradesh's Seoni district -- famous as the land of The Jungle Book's serpent Kaa -- a man 'died' 30 times and a woman 29 times due to snake bites in a scam to siphon off public money running into crores.
The alleged scam worth around Rs 11.26 crore was carried out by faking snakebite, drowning and lightning related deaths in official records to claim compensation from the state government.
A detailed probe conducted by the finance department from Jabalpur, which began with the scrutiny of bills of Keolari tehsil of Seoni district, led to the unearthing of the scam. 'A scam worth Rs 11.26 crore has come to the fore, following the investigations. The embezzled Rs 11.26 crore was credited into the bank accounts of 47 people,' joint director (finance) Rohit Kaushal, who led the year-long probe, said on Wednesday.
The man who is believed to have authored the entire scam, Assistant Grade III Sachin Dahayak, transferred the amount into the accounts of his family, friends and acquaintances. The public money was transferred to personal accounts instead of directly going to the beneficiary accounts, which establishes that the embezzlement was done in a planned and organized manner.
The scam, which reportedly happened between 2018-19 to 2021-22, saw many of those shown in government records as deceased due to snakebites, drowning and lightning, 'die' multiple times particularly due to the venomous bites of serpents.
A man named Ramesh was shown in the records of Keolari tehsil to have 'died' 30 times from snakebite, while Dwarika Bai 'died' 29 times and Ram Kumar 28 times.
The maximum Rs 4 lakh compensation is paid to the families of those who lose their loved ones due to natural calamities like snakebite, drowning, lightning, etc.
'During the year-long probe conducted on the order of the finance department, we scrutinized all bills related to financial assistance released for natural calamities, like snakebites. The probe has revealed embezzlement of Rs 11.26 crore. Death certificates and autopsy reports of those shown dead in the records of the Keolari tehsil, weren't made available to our team, despite repeated requests,' the joint director (finance) Rohit Kaushal said.
The probe has revealed that bills of those shown dead due to snakebites and drowning in the records were passed without death certificates, post-mortem reports and police verification. The Rs 11.26 crore embezzled through the scam was credited into the accounts of 47 people, including 46 private persons and one government employee.
The probe also revealed that staff at the Keolari tehsil took advantage of shortcomings in the integrated financial management information system (IFMIS) to execute the scam.

Gandhinagar: The state agriculture department conducted surprise raids at dealerships selling chemical fertilizers on Saturday to prevent misuse. In the state-wide raids conducted across 16 districts, the licences of 24 dealers were suspended, the govt said on Sunday. The govt stated that the inspections were carried out to ensure that sufficient fertilizer stocks are available to farmers for the kharif season. An official statement mentioned that the inspections were conducted by 32 teams of the agriculture department on Saturday in 16 districts. The inspections involved checking the physical stock of fertilisers, the stock in POS machines and verifying records of govt-approved dealers of chemical fertilizers. "In total, 57 dealers across 16 districts were inspected, and show-cause notices were issued to dealers for various reasons. The licences of 24 dealers were suspended due to irregularities found in the fertilizer stocks at 24 locations," the statement said. An estimated 1,090.64 metric tonnes of fertilizers worth 1.78 crore were prevented from being sold, and further legal action was taken. During the inspection, sale of fertilizer stocks was verified with 101 farmers," the statement added. The statement added that a total of 31 show-cause notices were issued for various reasons, and the licences of 17 dealers were suspended. In the second round of inspection, another 31 dealers were also subjected to raids. A total of 372.17 metric tonnes of unauthorized stock worth Rs 63.65 lakh was prevented from being sold. Lucknow: A 25-year-old final-year bachelor of pharmacy (BPharma) student from a private college in Lucknow's Chinhat area died by suicide on June 5 after being publicly humiliated over pending semester fees. The incident sparked outrage among students and led to the arrest of a college accountant, with four other staff members named in an FIR. The deceased, identified as Shubham Kumar, a resident of Rae Bareli, was found hanging in his hostel room number 109 shortly after he was reportedly barred from attending a farewell function and his practical exams due to fee-related issues. According to his suicide note and statements from friends, he deposited the semester fee, but a technical error in the college's internal system continued to reflect Rs 22,000 as outstanding. On the day of the incident, Shubham arrived at the college to take part in practical examinations and the farewell event. However, he was allegedly stopped by the institution's accountant, who reportedly told him in front of peers, "You can join only after clearing your dues." A two-page suicide note was recovered from the room, in which Shubham wrote: "I deposited the fees in college, but in the system, it continued to show pending. I tried several times to get it corrected, but nothing worked. I was stopped from appearing for my practical exams. I don't know what my friends will think of me. Please forgive me. Vehicle theft gang busted, four held with 9 stolen two-wheelers worth Rs 8 lakh
Indore: Vijay Nagar police have busted a vehicle theft gang, arresting four accused involved in a series of two-wheeler thefts across the city. Police have recovered a total of nine stolen two-wheelers from the accused, estimated to be worth approximately Rs 8 lakh. The gang's modus operandi involved conducting surveillance on vehicles parked in open areas and using alternative keys to unlock and steal them. A dedicated police team was formed to track down the culprits. The team reviewed CCTV footage from the crime scenes and deployed informants across suspected zones. Based on a tip-off, police arrested two suspects — Uday Lodhi, a resident of Tikamgarh district and Gaurav Namdev, a resident of Vidisha district — along with a stolen motorcycle. Further questioning led to identification and arrest of two more gang members, Yash Namdev, a resident of Gauri Nagar, Indore, and Sumit Sharma, a resident of Guna district. The investigation revealed that the gang was responsible for vehicle thefts in Vijay Nagar, Lasudia, and MIG police station areas. The stolen vehicles were of various companies. Among the arrested, Yash Namdev has a prior criminal record, with cases registered under serious charges including robbery at Banganga and Aerodrome police stations.
