Countdown to Kickoff: Vernon Broughton is the Saints Player of Day 91

Yahoo14-06-2025
The New Orleans Saints start their 2025 regular season 91 days from today against the Arizona Cardinals. Currently wearing No. 91 for the Saints is one of several newcomers to the team, rookie defensive lineman Vernon Broughton. As our Saints Player of the Day, it's time to take a closer look at the rookie defender.
Name (age): Vernon Broughton II (23)
Hometown: Houston, Texas
Position: Defensive tackle
Height, weight: 6-foot-5, 311 pounds
College: Texas Longhorns
Relative Athletic Score: N/A
Drafted: Round 3, 71st overall in 2025 (New Orleans Saints)
NFL experience: Rookie
2025 salary cap hit: $1,206,872
A four-star recruit out of Cypress Ridge High School in Texas, Broughton elected to stay in-state over recruiting pitches from other national powers. After playing in just two games in 2020 as a freshman, he was a regular part of the defensive line rotation until becoming a starter last season. In his last four years with the Longhorns, Broughton totaled 6.5 sacks and 13 tackles for loss among his 70 total stops.

New Orleans targeted Broughton with their first of two choices in Round 3, the seventh pick in the round. He was the fifth defensive tackle taken off the board in Day 2. Outside of Bryan Bresee, a first round pick in 2023, Broughton is the highest drafted interior defender by the Saints since Sheldon Rankins in 2016.
Broughton has an explosive first step off the snap and good athleticism for his size. He'll need to get stronger and show more consistency against the run, but plays with good leverage against double-teams and shows good lateral movement down the line of scrimmage. Broughton's frame and athleticism gives him some versatility as both an interior lineman or a big end in 3-man fronts.
New Orleans ranked 30th in overall defense and a putrid 31st against the run and yards per rush. It's clear that the Saints and new defensive coordinator Brandon Staley wanted to get more skilled up front. They picked Vernon Broughton midway through Day 2 of this year's draft to hopefully help them do exactly that.

Mets announce lineup vs Milwaukee Brewers for Sunday game

The Mets have already dropped their fourth straight series, but they will be looking to avoid a second straight sweep and a seventh straight loss on Sunday afternoon. On the heels of a 7-4 defeat to the Brewers on Saturday, which included a four-run seventh inning by the Brewers, the Mets will look to grab one victory against MLB's best team at 2:10 p.m. at American Family Field. One of the lone positives to come out of Saturday's loss was Pete Alonso's tying the Mets record with his 252nd career home run. Sean Manaea will look to stop the bleeding for the Mets on the mound on Sunday. The veteran lefty is 1-1 with a 3.52 ERA. Last time out, he avoided the loss despite allowing five earned runs on seven hits while striking out three. Quinn Priester will be on the other side for the Brewers. He has had some of the club's best success on the mound, posting an 11-2 record with a 3.15 ERA and 1.19 WHIP in 21 appearances (16 starts) this season. Ohio Sate football to hire former NFL assistant to defensive staff

According to multiple reports, the Ohio State football program is set to make a hire just three weeks prior to the start of the season. Former NFL assistant, Josh Boyer, appears to be set to join the program, as first reported by ESPN's Pete Thamel. There's little doubt about the connection regarding the hire. Current Ohio State defensive coordinator Matt Patricia has a long history with Boyer while both worked for Bill Belichick and the Patriots. The two began working with each other in 2006, all the way until 2018 when Patricia left to become the head coach of the Detroit Lions. Boyer last post was with the Miami Dolphins as their defensive coordinator from 2020 to 2022. He is a native of Heath, Ohio, and played for Muskingum College before starting his coaching career as a graduate assistant at King's College in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania. There has yet to be an announcement from the Ohio State football program on an official title. When that comes, we'll have it for you. Watch NASCAR Winner's Celebration Take Frightening Turn In Freak Accident On Victory Lane

WATKINS GLEN, N.Y. — NASCAR Xfinity Series points leader Connor Zilisch broke his collarbone after a hard fall in victory lane at Watkins Glen International. After his series-leading sixth victory, Zilisch was climbing onto the roof of his No. 88 Chevrolet to celebrate. He slipped after apparently getting his left foot caught in the driver's side window netting and tumbled awkwardly onto the asphalt. Another perspective of the fall also circulated on social media. The 19-year-old Zilisch was taken on a backboard to the trackside medical center and then transported to a hospital for further evaluation. He posted on X about two hours later that he had a broken collarbone, and that CT scans showed no head injury. 'Thank you everybody for reaching out today,' Zilisch posted. 'I'm out of the hospital and getting better already. Thankful for all the medics for quick attention and grateful it wasn't any worse.' Trackhouse Racing withdrew the No. 87 Chevrolet that Zilisch had been scheduled to drive in the Cup race Sunday at Watkins Glen. Zilisch's next Xfinity start is scheduled for Aug. 22 at Daytona International Speedway. The scary incident capped an eventful day for Zilisch, who drives for Dale Earnhardt Jr.'s JR Motorsports team. After starting from the pole position, Zilisch wrecked teammate Shane van Gisbergen while battling for the lead on Lap 65. After being bumped from the lead to fifth on a restart, Zilisch retook first and led the final four laps. 'He did such a great job of getting back through the field and getting the lead,' crew chief Mardy Lindley told SiriusXM NASCAR Radio after the race. 'Praying for Connor right now that he's OK. I think he's going to be fine.' Zilisch missed a race earlier this season at Texas Motor Speedway after sustaining a back injury during a crash at Talladega Superspeedway. He has posted 11 consecutive top-five finishes and five wins since his return. Related...
