Ludhiana: Inspection reveals open sewage, garbage dump at Tajpur complex
Temporary huts have taken over nearly one kilometre of the bank. These shanties lack toilets and proper drainage, and waste is dumped directly into the nullah. The nearby government fish market is also discharging waste into the water body. Roads leading to the site are broken and filthy, making the area almost unlivable. Two outlets were found releasing untreated wastewater straight into the nullah — one from the dairy complex and the other from the ETP itself.
Residents living near the Tajpur complex have long raised concerns. 'We have been breathing foul air for months. Cattle waste and garbage are left out in the open,' said Harjit Singh, a local resident. Another resident, Shalini Arora, added, 'There is no accountability. Political leaders promise action during elections but disappear later.'
The PAC held a meeting with dairy owners and suggested key steps: setting up a dairy cooperative society, following zero liquid discharge (ZLD) norms, building cow dung disposal points, and ensuring proper waste transport. A proposal was made to channel all dairy waste into a central gobar gas plant for sustainable treatment.
PAC also recommended installing bio-digesters at dairy units, GPS tracking of waste vehicles, and quarterly audits. A community helpline and monitoring committees were also suggested to ensure transparency.
Anita Sharma condemned the inaction of local authorities. 'The Buddha Nullah is choking due to negligence. If no urgent steps are taken, this will become a health disaster,' she said.
Despite repeated promises, political parties have failed to act. Even the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) had earlier proposed a parking and waste management system under the elevated road nearby, but it never materialised.

Hyderabad: The crucial political affairs committee (PAC) meeting of the Telangana Congress , originally scheduled for Aug 17, has been postponed and is now likely to be held between Aug 22 and Aug 24. The PAC, which comprises the chief minister, deputy chief minister, TPCC chief, AICC leader Meenakshi Natarajan, ministers, govt advisors, and senior leaders of the party, was expected to decide on the schedule for panchayat elections and the way forward for extending the 42% quota to the BCs in local bodies. A senior leader of the Telangana Congress said, "Revanth Reddy has to convene a cabinet meeting to seek approval for whatever course of action the govt adopts to extend the 42% BC quota, as well as to decide the dates and number of phases for the local body polls." "The chief minister, in a day or two, will take a call on whether to hold the cabinet meeting before the PAC, keeping in view the paucity of time to complete local bodies election process," the leader further said. The options before the state govt include issuing a GO or an ordinance to implement the 42% BC quota in local bodies after assessing whether such a move will survive legal scrutiny, given that the 50% cap has not been removed from the Panchayat Raj Act of 2018; approaching the Supreme Court with a writ of mandamus, or extending the enhanced BC quota on behalf of the party. Ramagundam MLA raises alarm over pipeline defects in RFCL, demands probe
Levelling serious allegations of construction flaws and neglect at the Ramagundam Fertilisers and Chemicals Limited (RFCL) plant, Congress MLA Raj Thakur Makkan Singh demanded a probe by the CBI or an expert committee into the alleged irregularities committed in laying the ammonia pipeline and other facilities at the unit. During a visit to the plant on Saturday, the local MLA said that since the plant began operations in 2021, it has been repeatedly shut down due to pipeline leakages. 'The pipeline construction was shoddy. Any leakage threatens the lives of thousands living around the plant. The company which laid the pipeline must be penalised for the defects,' he said, adding that urea production had been badly hit at a time when Telangana's cultivation area has increased significantly this year due to frequent shutdowns. Despite Telangana investing 11% in the project and extending full cooperation, the Centre was not supplying even 40% of the promised urea to Telangana, he alleged. 'In May, June and July, even half of the quota was not supplied. In August, we were supposed to get 65,000 metric tonnes (MT), but with the plant shut yet again, farmers are facing severe shortage,' he pointed out. Mr. Makkan Singh demanded that the stalled Zero Level Discharge (ZLD) plant, for which tenders have been pending for four years, be immediately constructed to contain pollution affecting nearby villages. 'People of Ramagundam are suffering. Pollution-related illnesses are rising. Free corporate medical care must be provided to affected villagers. Veerlapalli village should be relocated under R&R,' he said. He also demanded shifting of the RFCL corporate office from Noida/Delhi to Ramagundam, arguing that the factory and local problems cannot be supervised effectively from Delhi. Moreover, while ₹20 crore must be allotted towards CSR every year, only ₹1.1 crore had been released so far, he said, urging release of the full CSR amount and use of funds for sanitation, street lighting and development works in affected villages and in the town.

Her unmatched courage and supreme sacrifice, the CM said, remain an inspiration for every Indian. As a mark of respect to her valour and patriotism, the 'double-engine government' has established a new PAC battalion in Budaun dedicated to her, he said. The chief minister said this battalion is dedicated to the daughters of Uttar Pradesh. He further said that the government is moving swiftly on its plan to install a statue of Avanti Bai Lodhi. The government has consistently taken significant steps to honour and recognise women power in Uttar Pradesh, he added. 'The state government has also honoured the legacy of women warriors by naming key institutions after them. A central agricultural university has been established in Jhansi in the name of Rani Lakshmibai, while a medical college in Banda has been dedicated to Maharani Durgavati. In addition, three new PAC battalions have been raised in the names of Veerangana Uda Devi in Lucknow, Veerangana Jhalkaribai in Gorakhpur, and Veerangana Avanti Bai Lodhi in Budaun,' the CM pointed out.
