Born and raised in Overport, Durban, Melvin Peters is a household name in the jazz scene, renowned for his compelling artistry and dedication to the genre.
With a career spanning decades, Peters' musical journey commenced at the tender age of six when he began classical piano lessons, paving the way for a lifelong passion.
His academic pursuit of a Bachelor of Music degree at the University of Natal in 1983 marked a significant turning point, as he delved into jazz piano studies under the esteemed Darius Brubeck.
Under Brubeck's guidance, Peters developed an ardent love for jazz, which continued to flourish with a Master of Music in Jazz Performance and studies at Harvard University.
Throughout his career, he has captivated audiences worldwide, embarking on tours across the United States, Europe, and the United Kingdom.
Peters was a prominent member of the Jazzanians, a student band that not only toured the US but also produced the touching album, 'We Have Waited Too Long'.
His collaboration with jazz icons like Abdullah Ibrahim, Winston Mankunku Ngozi, and Thandi Klaasen has further cemented his status in the jazz community.
Recently, Peters brought his rich artistry to Hue Café for a special performance, which marked the culmination of the 2025 'Who's Got The Map?' series.
Presented by the Centre for Jazz and Popular Music at the University of KwaZulu-Natal with the support of the KZN Performing Arts Trust (KZNPAT), this event celebrated the legacy of South African jazz and aimed to inspire a new generation of musicians.
Peters performed alongside a talented ensemble featuring Jeff Robinson on saxophone and flute, Bongani Sokhela on bass guitar, and Bruce Baker on drums.
Together, they paid homage to South African jazz icons while demonstrating the genre's evolving tapestry.

In an engaging interview with 'Independent Media Lifestyle', Peters reflected on his musical influences and formative moments.
'I started jazz piano lessons whilst at the University of Natal. I was in my third year at the time and started to develop an all-consuming passion for jazz,' Peters recalled.
His determination only grew as he pursued a Master's degree in Jazz Performance, cementing his resolve to turn his passion into a career.
The influence of jazz greats is evident throughout Peters' journey. He credits the legendary Oscar Peterson as his most significant influence, stating, 'I connected with his playing on a deep level and eventually started to play like him.'
Locally, he draws inspiration from Lionel Pillay, the first jazz pianist he experienced live, whose talent sparked a desire in Peters to emulate his legacy.
'He is still my musical hero,' Peters added.
Peters expressed immense pride in being part of the 'Who's Got The Map?' series.
'This series showcases the rich landscape of jazz in our city and is a significant step towards a vibrant cultural scene,' he remarked.
Peters believes collaboration is essential in jazz, fostering connections that enhance the creative process. 'I have developed quite a synergy with my band members,' he shared.
'As a band leader, I strive to get the best out of each of them.'
The improvisational nature of jazz not only allows for freedom of expression but also highlights the individuality of each musician, enriching the collective sound.
When reflecting on the historical significance of jazz in South Africa, Peters underscores its role as a voice for resistance during apartheid.
'Jazz has been an integral part of the struggle for liberation in South Africa,' he asserted, noting the sacrifices many artists made to preserve this art form amidst oppressive circumstances.
'By honouring them, we pay tribute to the personal sacrifices of those who paved the way for our music today.'
For Peters, the legacy of South African jazz is not just a personal cause but also a mission to enlighten younger generations.
'They need to understand the contributions of jazz icons who wrote beautiful, soul-stirring music that we can perform today," he said. 'It is our duty to keep their stories alive."
Offering advice to aspiring jazz musicians, he emphasised the importance of hard work and dedication.
'Music can be an exciting journey, but it involves sacrifice and an investment of time,' Peters advised.
He encouraged emerging artists to seek formal lessons and build a robust repertoire of jazz standards, all the while enjoying the process.
Looking back on his journey, Peters hopes to be remembered as a hard-working musician committed to making a difference in his community.
'When all is said and done, I would like to be remembered as an artist who paid his dues, and a South African dedicated to the growth and appreciation of jazz,' he concluded.

Shade at Siya? Rachel Kolisi posts about 'loyalty'
Rachel Kolisi has shared another cryptic quote, seemingly about her marriage split from Springbok captain Siya Kolisi. Last October, the mother-of-two announced her separation and has been navigating life as a single parent ever since. Rachel has been accused of 'milking public sympathy' with her social media posts ranging from her anxiety attacks to her driving a 'humble' Toyota Yaris. In an Instagram Story, Rachel Kolisi shared another cryptic post on her Instagram Story. It read: 'The only people I owe my loyalty to are those who never made me question theirs'. In recent months, Rachel has posted several quotes that her followers believe are related to her relationship status. Image via Instagram: @siyakolisi In February, Rachel Kolisi suggested that she was being stalked by someone she had purposely blocked. Her post read: 'You block someone on everything, and all of a sudden, xajdhjsd stars are watching your story.' Over the festive season, another read: 'Let the kids believe in Santa. You believed in your ex 25 times.' In his 2023 documentary and autobiography, Rise , Siya admitted to having a rocky relationship with Rachel after confessing to excessive partying, heavy drinking, being addicted to porn, and frequenting strip clubs. There was also the impression that Siya had been unfaithful to his wife. While Siya and Rachel Kolisi have sadly gone their separate ways a year ago, they were still very much in love. Amid the July Springbok test series, Siya posted a collage of images that included his then-wife Rachel and children, as well as fellow players Cheslin Kolbe and Eben Etzebeth and their respective families. In the pics, Rachel and Siya embraced as they smiled for the cameras. Rachel reposted the images, captioning them: 'A Saturday full of my favourite things'. Chidimma mocks news of Miss SA organisation 'downfall'?
Chidimma Adetshina, the South African-born Miss Universe runner-up, is laughing off news that the Miss SA pageant has been postponed and is under new management. The news comes days after pageant CEO Stephanie Weil resigned from her post. In the past year, the Cape Town model – whose father is Nigerian, and whose mother is Mozambican – has been the target of a Home Affairs investigation. Last year, Chidimma stepped down from her position as Miss SA finalist. A few weeks later, she won the title of Miss Universe Nigeria and competed at the international pageant, where she was crowned runner-up. In a press statement posted on pageant fanpage @misssafandom, the Miss SA organisation announced that the finale would be postponed from August to a later date in 2025. This was one to 'ensure the alignment with international and other global events.' Since Stephanie Weil stepped down as CEO, the pageant has been taken under the wing of Africa Fashion International, which has vowed to 'embark on this strategic journey together, leveraging our unique strengths to drive growth and innovation.' In the comments section, pageant fans were mostly unsurprised by the news, given the delay in announcing the Top 30. Also commenting was Chidimma Adetshina, who posted a meme of a man suppressing a smile. When one follower accused the pageant queen of being 'petty,' she responded, 'I'm just smiling. I've given you way too much access to me, and I'm sure that's your biggest achievement this year. Go rest, bye!' Chidimma Adetshina has reacted to news of Miss SA's postponement. The beauty queen is a former 2024 finalist. Image via screenshot: @misssafandom Late last year, the Department of Home Affairs revealed it would be investigating the mother of Chidimma Adetshina, Anabela Rungo, who had unlawfully registered her as a South African at birth via fraudulent documents. Earlier this year, Rungo was arrested and charged with violating the Immigration and Identification Act. She has since been released on bail. Both Chidimma and her mother have had their SA ID and passports revoked. WHAT ARE YOUR THOUGHTS ON MISS SA'S POSTPONEMENT?
