Usyk demolishes Dubois with fifth-round knockout
LONDON, July 19 (Reuters) - Oleksandr Usyk floored Briton Daniel Dubois in the fifth round of a thrilling contest at Wembley Stadium on Saturday to once again become the undisputed heavyweight boxing world champion. The win saw Usyk reclaim the IBF belt he vacated last year, before a December rematch with Tyson Fury, with Dubois upgraded to champion and then defending the title against compatriot Anthony Joshua last September. Asked about beating his younger opponent, Usyk said: "38 is a young guy, remember! 38 is only (the) start! "I want to say thank you to Jesus Christ. I want to say thank you to my team and Wembley, thank you so much! It's for the people. "Nothing is next. It's enough, next, I don't know. I want to rest. My family, my wife, my children, I want to rest now. Two or three months, I want to just rest." Usyk's technical ability was on full display from the outset as he sidestepped everything thrown his way with deceptive ease and connected repeatedly with his jab, putting on a masterclass in counter-punching. Despite weighing in at a career-heaviest 227.3 pounds on Friday, Usyk floated around the ring with an almost balletic grace and prevented Dubois from making the most of his superior size. The Ukrainian comfortably outclassed his opponent in three of the first four rounds, but most of the damage was dealt out in a brutal fifth-round beatdown. The Ukrainian sent his opponent to the canvas with an overhand right, before a booming left hand right on the chin dashed Dubois' dreams and brought an end to the bout. The unification fight was a rematch of one that Dubois lost by a controversial ninth-round knockout in Wroclaw, Poland, in 2023, after Usyk was given time to recover from what the referee ruled was a low blow.

JEFF POWELL'S SCORECARD: Oleksandr Usyk dominated Daniel Dubois to become the undisputed world heavyweight champion - so, what wowed Mail Sport's boxing expert the most at Wembley?
Oleksandr Usyk became the undisputed heavyweight champion of the world for the second time with a masterful fifth-round knockout of Daniel Dubois. The Ukrainian dominated his British opponent in every round in front of 90,000 fans at Wembley. This was Dubois' chance to get revenge after being floored by Usyk in the ninth round in 2023 but it wasn't to be for Dynamite. The 27-year-old was unable to get in range to land his crushing punches and was ultimately outfoxed by Usyk, 38, who remains undefeated in his professional career. Usyk, who has now beaten British stars Anthony Joshua, Tyson Fury, and Dubois twice each, retains his reputation as one of the best to ever do it. Mail Sport's Jeff Powell was in attendance at Wembley and this is his scorecard. Jeff Powell's scorecard Round 1 - If anything Usyk received a more reverential welcome not the ring than the local boy who had already made good on his dream of becoming a world champion. Dubois had threatened to throw the kitchen but he was somewhat out of range at the start and picked off by the razor sharp Usyk. Usyk 10-9 Round 2 - There was meatier menace in the Dubois lunges but Usyk was not to be found so easily as Anthony Joshua when Dynamite blew him away. Usyk 10-9 Round 3 - Dubois enjoyed some success at the start of the third but three or four dazzling combinations sent his sweat flying as another round slipped away. Usyk 10-9 Round 4 - Dubois seemed to have forgotten about the weakness in the Usyk body he had supposedly exposed with that debatable low in the first fight - but when did throw once to the solar region the Ukrainian shrugged it off and returned to work with lefts and rights. Usyk 10-9 Round 5 - Dubois was supposed to be the one needing an early finish but Usyk delivered the fifth round knock with laser ferocity. Two lefts and a right for the first dropping to the canvass. A veritable barrage to finish the young man off. Wow.
