Bern (Switzerland), Jul 19 (AP) Spain ended Switzerland's dreamy midsummer run through its home Women's European Championship in a 2-0 win in the quarterfinals despite missing two penalty kicks.
Swiss resistance was broken by the world champion's two goals in a five-minute spell midway through the second half on Friday.
Athenea Del Castillo slotted in a shot from Aitana Bonmatí's flicked assist in the 66th, just four minutes after coming off the bench, and Clàudia Pina curled a shot from the edge of the penalty area in the 71st.
Spain will play France or Germany in the semifinals next Wednesday in Zurich. The winner will face defending champion England or Italy in the July 27 final at St Jakob-Park, Basel.
Spain has a tournament-leading 16 goals yet could not score from the spot.
Mariona Caldentey skewed her penalty badly wide in the ninth minute and Alexia Putellas' shot was saved by Livia Peng in the 88th.
Switzerland's spirited young team gave its noisy home fans hope of a stunning upset, even more so after Caldentey's bad miss was greeted by a grateful roar by the sold-out Wankdorf Stadium.
Spain also struck the posts of Switzerland's goal three times including in back-to-back chances in a frantic scramble at a corner in the 60th.
Switzerland defender Noelle Maritz was sent off in stoppage time for a foul as the last defender.
Spain defender Laia Aleixandri is suspended for the semifinals after her second yellow card of the tournament, for a first-half foul on Iman Beney.
Spain has reached the semifinals for the first time since 1997. It lost to the Swiss in the quarterfinals at Euro 2022, played in England.
Poor penalties ========= The quality of penalty kicks taken in these quarterfinals has been shockingly bad.
Spain's Caldentey joined Norway captain Ada Hegerberg in placing her spot kick low and wide. Hegerberg's miss came when Norway trailed 1-0 in a 2-1 loss to Italy on Wednesday.
With Caldentey off the field, Putellas struck Spain's second penalty hard though at a good height for Swiss goalkeeper Livia Peng to dive to the left and push away.
Just five of 14 penalties were scored on Thursday in the shootout between England and Sweden.
England won the shootout despite four saves by Sweden goalkeeper Jennifer Falk. Sweden struck a post and sent two over the crossbar, including Falk's kick that would have won the game.
Sundhage's surprises ============= Switzerland veteran coach Pia Sundhage delivered on a promise to surprise with her starting lineup.
Iman Beney, the 18-year-old wing back, played as a lone striker with pace, often supported in attack by Sydney Schertenleib, also 18. Sundhage brought back her third 18-year-old Noemi Ivelj for a start in midfield.
All-time Switzerland record goal-scorer Ana-Maria Crnogorcevic, the former Barcelona and Atletico Madrid forward, was moved to right back to use her experience against the strong Spain left flank threat.
It worked in as much as Spain was shut out in the first half for the first time at Euro 2025. AP SSC SSC

FIDE Women's World Cup: Koneru Humpy advances to semi-final, Harika-Divya match drawn, Vaishali eliminated
A bittersweet day for India saw Koneru Humpy advance to the semifinals by outplaying Yuxin Song. D Harika drew with Divya Deshmukh, and R Vaishali suffered elimination. read more Indian Grandmaster Koneru Humpy secured a spot in the semifinals of the FIDE Women's Chess World Cup by holding International Master Yuxin Song of China. After winning the first game with the white pieces, Humpy needed only a draw in the second game of the quarterfinal to advance, which she achieved after a closely contested battle. Song was not on song against Humpy Yuxin Song had to win to stay in the hunt against Humpy and her preferred choice was the Jobava's London, an opening that is fancied these days by many strong Grandmasters. Humpy equalised without much ado but then sacrificed two pawns in tandem to give white some hopes. However, Song's pawn structure was really broken with three pawns standing on a sole file and Humpy found her counter play in the centre. Recovering the pawns Humpy was happy to lead the game to a level rook and pawns endgame. Song tried in vain for 53 moves before splitting the point. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD With fourth place secured, Koneru Humpy has two opportunities to finish in the top three. Finishing in the top three will guarantee her a spot in the next Women's Candidates' tournament. All-Indian affair ends in a draw The all-Indian affair between GM D Harika and IM Divya Deshmukh ended in a draw, which means they will now square off in the tiebreaker, which is scheduled to held on Monday. Harika tried safely as white and like the previous game the players reached a drawn rook and pawns endgame. Interestingly, this is the only match that goes into tie-break games of shorter duration, which also means that there will be two Indians in the semifinals. 🇨🇳 Lei Tingjie, 🇨🇳 Tan Zhongyi, and 🇮🇳 Humpy Koneru are through to the semifinals! ♟️🔥 The final semifinal spot will be decided tomorrow as 🇮🇳 Divya Deshmukh and 🇮🇳 Harika Dronavalli face off in the playoffs! Results - Quarterfinals - Game 2 🇨🇳 Lei Tingjie 1-0 Nana Dzagnidze… — International Chess Federation (@FIDE_chess) July 20, 2025 End of the road for Vaishali As for Vaishali, she suffered a loss to former Women's champion Zhongyi Tan of China. Vaishali took her chances in the middle game and got the dynamic balance she was looking for. However, resourceful as she is, Tan capitalised on an unforced error to gain the upper hand. Vaishali again got some chances according to the computer but it was always a tall order to find all correct moves. It will be a tough loss for her as she was in a slightly better position for most of the game. Vaishali had drawn the first game against Tan and had lost the second, which means her campaign in the FIDE Women's World Cup has come to a sad end. (With inputs from PTI)

2nd Youth Test: Rew, Ekansh steady England U-19 after Indian bowlers strikes
Last Updated: Chelmsford (UK), Jul 20 (PTI) India U-19 bowlers struck at regular intervals before skipper Thomas Rew and Ekansh Singh came to the home team's rescue on day one of the second Youth Test here on Sunday. Thanks to Rew and Ekansh's 90-run partnership, England U-19 recovered from 80 for five to reach 177 for six in 44 overs. Rew top-scored for England U-19 on the opening day after RS Ambrish and Aditya Rawat picked up two wickets apiece. India U-19 skipper Ayush Mhatre won the toss and chose to field, and the decision was straightaway vindicated as Rawat and Henil Patel struck once each with the new ball to leave England at 4/2 in the second over. Rawat, in fact, struck with the very first ball of the match, trapping Ben Dawkins in front of the wicket at the County Ground. In the day's second over, Patel got Adam Thomas out lbw to leave the England U-19 team in all sorts of trouble, even as one-down bat Aaryan Sawant got off the mark with a boundary. After a delayed start due to rain, the match was interrupted when the heavens opened up again with England U-19 reaching 18 for two in 5.3 overs. The interruption was lengthy, forcing the umpires to call for an early lunch. However, Rawat cut short Flintoff's stay in the middle when he had the batter caught by Vihaan Malhotra for a 26-ball 16 to leave the home team at 29 for three. All-rounder RS Ambrish dismissed Sawant caught by Malhotra after the batter had reached 20 with the help of three boundaries. Ben Mayes and Thomas Rew, who is performing the dual role of captaining and keeping in this match, then steadied the innings for a brief while before the former was dismissed by Ambrish for a 31 off 40 balls. His knock contained five hits to the fence. Rew was then joined by Ekansh Singh (46 batting) in the middle, and the two forged a much-needed partnership of 90 runs for the sixth wicket to give England U-19's innings a semblance of respectability before leg-spinner Naman Pushpak took the important wicket of the home team skipper. Brief scores: England U-19: 177/6 in 44 overs (Thomas Rew 59; Aditya Rawat 2/42, RS Ambrish 2/39) vs India U-19.
