Jeferson Merli, a goalkeeper who played for GD Caldelas in Portugal, took a swim in the Homem River in Terras de Bouro, in the north-west of the country.
However, he is believed to have sadly drowned after vanishing beneath the water.

He lived in Braga, around a 40-minute drive away from the river.
His club paid a touching tribute following his tragic death.
A statement read: 'Jeferson, who had recently renewed his contract with our club, leaves us not only his dedication on the pitch, but also the friendship, professionalism, and team spirit that always defined him.
'In this moment of grief, GD Caldelas expresses its solidarity and extends heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, and all those who had the privilege of knowing him. Our club will never forget his commitment and the mark he left on all of us.
'Rest in peace, Jeferson.'

Family sues after man, 21, drowns at the Jersey Shore with lifeguards on duty
The family of a 21-year-old man who drowned at a New Jersey beach while lifeguards were on duty has sued the local borough and its beach patrol. Joseph Volm died on August 6, 2023, when he was dragged into the ocean by a rip current, according to a lawsuit filed in Cape May County Superior Court. His family alleges that lifeguards in Wildwood Crest failed to warn beachgoers about the hazardous conditions, which may have saved their son from his fate, the suit, obtained by NJ Advance Media, says. Volm visited the beach on August 5, 2023, when he entered the water and was grasped by the rip current, the lawsuit states. Riptides' varying speeds and strengths can make them particularly dangerous for even experienced swimmers. After being washed ashore, the youngster was found unresponsive, according to NJ Advance Media. Lifeguards did perform CPR on Volm and he was later moved off the beach by a rescue rig and taken to Cape Regional Medical Center. There, he was pronounced dead. Volm's family alleges that the beach patrols at Wildwood Crest were not adequately staffed and did not put in place adequate measures to prevent the tragedy. Red flags, to warn about hazardous conditions, were allegedly not in place in the area where the youngster had entered the water, per the suit. Born in Marlton, Volm wrestled and played lacrosse for Paul IV High School, according to an online obituary. In his free time, he enjoyed bowling, playing video games and hanging out with his cousins. Volm also loved animals, especially his dogs Rocky and Sophie, and was known to family members as 'the dog whisperer.' NJ Advance Media also reported that, around a week before his death, Volm had left a drug treatment center. However, his family told investigators that he had not been showing signs of drug abuse at the time he drowned. The lawsuit asks a jury to award compensatory and punitive damages to Volm's family. Wildwood Crest Mayor Don Cabrera told NJ Advance Media he was aware of attempts to sue the borough, but directed questions elsewhere. The Independent

Cristiano Ronaldo marks 'landmark anniversary' with stunning hat-trick in thumping Al-Nassr win - as £26m signing Joao Felix dazzles for new side
Cristiano Ronaldo marked the previously unheralded 12th anniversary of his now famous 'Siu' celebration with a hat-trick in Al-Nassr 's 4-0 thrashing of Rio Ave. The 40-year-old, who topped the Saudi Pro League scoring charts last term with 25 goals, was helped in the demolition of the side from his homeland by his Portuguese colleague, new recruit Joao Felix. The former Chelsea forward, who completed a £26million move last month, assisted two of Ronaldo's strikes and three on the night, with the first coming after only 15 minutes via clever headed knockdown. Ronaldo grabbed his first after combining with Felix on the edge of the box before firing into the near post before the break. The former Manchester United and Real Madrid star had the chance to get his second when Nelson Abbey handled inside the area just after the hour, but the Al-Nassr skipper instead handed the spot-kick to former Liverpool man Sadio Mane. But his tame effort was easily saved by Rio Ave stopper Cezary Miszta. Luckily for the Saudi Pro League outfit, Ronaldo was on hand to head home just 16 seconds after the miss and he would get his third only five minutes later when Felix and felled in the area and he converted Al-Nassr's second spot kick of the match. Ronaldo's compatriot Jorge Jesus replaced Stefano Pioli last month with the objective of ending Al-Nassr's wait for the Saudi title. The club have failed to win major honours since Ronaldo's blockbuster move in 2022. Following the marquee addition of Felix, this week, reports claimed that Al-Nassr are interested in signing Newcastle target Yoane Wissa. Wissa netted 19 Premier League goals for Brentford last season and has also attracted interest from the likes of Tottenham and Nottingham Forest. Former Aston Villa striker Jhon Duran departed Al-Nassr on loan this summer just months after completing a lucrative switch to the gulf state club. As such, Jesus' side are on the hunt for attacking reinforcements to partner the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo and Sadio Mane in the star-studded team. After initially being linked with a move away from the club after again failing to secure a league title win in Saudi Arabia, Ronaldo ultimately signed a bumper new two-year deal with Al-Nassr in June. The new terms, which will take him past his 42nd birthday, reportedly include an eye-watering basic salary of £488,000-a-day.
