Newport woman sold drugs to her friends and family
Emma Harris, prosecuting, told the city's crown court how officers found an iPhone with messages offering cannabis for sale.
They also seized two bags of the class B drug weighing 6.95g and £380.29 in cash.
Miss Harris said: 'The messages downloaded from the phone advertising cannabis for sale are typical of street deals.'
'The defendant played a significant role with an expectation of financial gain.
'There is no naivety or exploitation in this case.'
Kassim, of Clyffard Crescent, Newport admitted being concerned in the supply of cannabis and possession of cannabis.
She pleaded guilty on the basis that she only sold the class B drug to friends and family.
This was accepted by the prosecution.
The offences occurred between December 30, 2023 and April 30, 2024.
She has four previous convictions for five offences which include shoplifting when she was a juvenile.
Kassim's most recent brush with the law came this year when she was fined for possession of cannabis on March 17.
Her barrister David Pinnell told the court that his client was the sole carer of her disabled 12-year-old son.
'This was a one-woman band,' he said in mitigation. 'It was all related to her.
'She was candid in her pre-sentence report interview with the probation officer.
'The defendant previously managed to overcome more serious drug use and she is currently working with the Gwent Drug and Alcohol Service (GDAS) over cannabis.'
The judge, Recorder Andrew Hammond, told Kassim that although she had only sold to friends and family she must have at least made 'a small profit'.
He added: "It is also aggravated by the fact that you were supplying from home where there was a child.
'However, by working with GDAS you are trying to turn your life around.'
Kassim was sentenced to an 18-month community order.
The defendant must carry out 120 hours of unpaid work and complete a 15-day rehabilitation activity requirement.
She was ordered to pay £554 by paying £400 towards prosecution costs and a £114 victim surcharge.
The judge ordered the forfeiture and destruction of the cannabis and the forfeiture of the cash.
Before she left the dock, Recorder Hammond said to her: 'Look on this as your last chance.'

Gucci bag 'full of crack cocaine' found on man near school
Gwent Police were called after an alarm went off at a primary school in Gilfach at 3.27am on June 1. When officers attended, Declan Gordon was spotted on a path near the school entrance. He gave the officers his name, but bolted when they went to search him. Gordon was tackled to the ground and arrested. He was found to have a Gucci bag underneath his clothes, and inside was a 134.48 gram rock of crack cocaine, as well as £815 in cash, weighing scales, empty snap bags, and two smaller rocks of crack cocaine totalling 30.03 grams. They also seized 0.57 grams of cannabis and an iPhone. The prosecution said the larger rock of crack cocaine had an estimated value of £13,448 if sold in street deals, whilst the remaining amount was worth £3,030. Mr Rees, appearing for the defendant, said Gordon was 'lightly convicted' – having only one previous conviction and no cautions or convictions for drug trafficking. He said Gordon's time in custody had been made more difficult due to his 'cognitive limitations' and 'learning difficulties'. A probation service report deemed Gordon was at low risk of reoffending, Mr Rees added. Judge Jeremy Jenkins sentenced Gordon to a total of 27 months imprisonment.

Instant karma as woman chases down iPhone thief and sends thug crashing to the ground… before cops make arrest
A daring thief was dealt some instant karma after snatching a woman's iPhone only to be tackled to the ground by her moments later. The unnamed Russian woman, 25, was caught off guard when a 38-year-old assailant tried to snatch her 'expensive' phone from her hand while she was waiting for the bus. The thief then desperately tried to escape, but was unwittingly pursued by his victim as she refused to give up without a fight. Seconds later the woman floors the man to the ground before wrestling with him to eventually retrieve her iPhone. A man who witnessed the attempted theft was also seen emerging from a nearby shop to help the female victim. He pulled the man to his feet and pushed him away, offering him a swift kick to the back as he did so. The attacker, who was identified as a 'migrant' to Russia, was apprehended by police and remanded in custody. He faces up to seven years in prison if convicted and could be expelled from Russia. The woman was praised by police for her 'remarkable courage' and is expected to be honoured for her bravery in tackling the thug. A police statement said: 'The incident occurred while the young woman was waiting for a bus. 'The assailant suddenly snatched her expensive smartphone and tried to flee. 'However, the victim showed remarkable courage. 'She chased after the attacker and managed to retrieve her phone.
