Gemma Atkinson reveals 'scary few hours' as she rushed young son to hospital
The 40-year-old former Emmerdale actress and the 34-year-old professional ballroom dancer - who met on Strictly Come Dancing - had a chaotic lead up to their offspring's joint baptism when young Thiago was taken off in an ambulance to Bolton hospital's children emergency department on Saturday (05.07.25).
Fortunately, the little one is "absolutely fine" but it was a worrying time for the family, who still managed to make it to the church on Sunday morning (06.07.25).
She shared on Instagram: "We had such a busy weekend with a big build-up and lots of organising. A family birthday tea for Mia on Friday, her party for her school friends Saturday, both Mia and Thiagos christening on Sunday and on top of that a trip to A and E with Thiago sat night."
Without stating what was wrong with Thiago, she said: "We were there until 1am Sunday morning and still somehow rocked up to church at 9.30. We were exhausted but we had the best day. He's absolutely fine! But it was a scary few hours and I wanted to say a massive thank you to Bolton hospital children's A and E department, and also the lovely paramedics who took us up there. God bless our NHS!"
Through movement, rest, and ice baths, gym bunny Gemma managed to restore the calm in her mind and body and was feeling "full of energy" come Monday (07.07.25).
She continued: "On Sunday evening when we were home after all the chaos and fun of weekend my throat started to get sore which I knew was my body communicating with me. 'You're getting run down' with that in mind I dosed up on lemon and local honey, had a bath in magnesium salts and an early night."
She concluded: "Monday morning, I did an ice bath before the nursery run, a long dog walk and then headed into the gym to move in a way that was restoring, whilst relaxing. I bounced into work Monday afternoon full of energy and feeling great again. Small simple things to help me both physically and mentally. Movement is medicine, no matter how it's done, it all helps."

Kayaker pops into Pembrokeshire for Welsh cakes on incredible European tour
An intrepid round-Europe kayaker has been welcomed to Pembrokeshire this week with a bag of Welsh cakes - thanks to a local teacher who he met in Spain last year. Urban Heupgen from Germany and Dylan Davies, who teaches at Haverfordwest High, had a chance encounter last August while Dylan was on a summer tour in his camper van. Dylan, from New Hedges, near Tenby, was astonished to learn that Urban had paddled thousands of miles on his incredible journey, encountering all kinds of marine hazards on his way. 'I bumped into Urban last August in Spain, and when I asked how far he had come, he surprised me and said 'Germany," explained Dylan 'We got talking and it turned out he was on a multi-leg trip over a few years from Estonia through the canal and river system in Germany into the Med. "He has been met with range safety vessels, multiple species of whales, container ships, ferries and even a close call with a helicopter.' Dylan was fascinated by Urban's voyage which the solo kayaker has documented on his social media pages. Urban can be followed via on Instagram and his blog The Pembrokeshire reunion was 'a special moment', said Dylan, pictured here as he greeted Urban (centre). (Image: Dylan Davies) 'He was so unassuming," said Dylan. "When I met him, he had around 100 followers and minimal specialised kit - his sea kayak, paddle and lifejacket. "Though he isn't doing it for any fanfare or recognition he will be the first to circumnavigate Europe when complete." Dylan kept in touch with Urban through his social media, and last Saturday, July 12, he boarded his own boat to sail out for a rendezvous on Caldey Island. 'It was a very special moment," said Dylan. "The weather couldn't have been better and as he didn't have any shorts with him, as he didn't expect a hot British summer I gifted my swim shorts and a bag of Welsh cakes.' Dylan's dog Larry, was all aboard for his master's meet-up. (Image: Dylan Davies) Urban is now paddling his way across the Irish sea to the east coast of Ireland, from where he will work his way clockwise around Ireland, then to Scotland, hoping to finish this year in the Shetlands. Added Dylan: "It would be great if people could give him a follow to watch his epic and unassuming journey." You can follow Urban's voyage on his social media pages, linked above.

Early reviews for The Fantastic Four: First Steps call film ‘out of this world'
Initial reviews for The Fantastic Four: First Steps are in and singing high praises for Marvel's newest film. The movie stars Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, and Joseph Quinn as the heroic quartet, with British actor Ralph Ineson as the villain Galactus and Julia Garner as the Silver Surfer. The original Fantastic Four comic books follow a group of scientists who develop superhuman abilities after being exposed to a mysterious cosmic storm. The new Marvel film follows Mister Fantastic, the Invisible Woman, the Human Torch, and the Thing as they defend Earth from Galactus and the Silver Surfer. The Fantastic Four cast will appear in the film alongside a variety of characters from the Thunderbolts, Black Panther, and X-Men films. Disney's Marvel Studios acquired the rights to the Fantastic Four in 2019 when the company merged with Fox. While the film doesn't officially debut in theaters until July 25, some have seen an advanced screening and shared their thoughts. 'The Fantastic Four: First Steps' debuts in theaters July 25 (Marvel Studios) One person wrote on X: '#FantasticFour Is a masterpiece. the visual effects and the score are a HUGE stand out. Galactus Is huge In IMAX. It's emotional and gives you hope. It beats you off and doesn't stop. STAY Until the END CREDITS.' That review prompted someone to respond: 'That's all I needed to hear buying a ticket now.' #FantasticFour is SOLID like Ben Grimm! Marvel's First Family has chemistry that is out of this world. The powers alone make for some great visuals, but the space sequences are quite breathtaking. If these are their first steps, I'm excited to see what steps they take next — Law⚡️ (@LawJSharma) July 19, 2025 Someone else who saw the film wrote: '#FantasticFour Quite possibly the best Marvel Studios film ever released. Absolutely loaded with talent and standout performances from Vanessa Kirby and Joseph Quinn. If you thought the MCU died with Endgame, think again. Thoughtfully crafted and easily a genre-defining classic.' Several reviews called out Kirby's performance individually, with one person sharing: 'Matt Shakman delivers an action packed, humorous and fun film with #TheFantasticFour the family dynamic between Marvel's first family is there! The entire cast is great but the FANTASTIC standout is Vanessa Kirby's Sue Storm!' #FantasticFour Is a masterpiece. the visual effects and the score are a HUGE stand out. Galactus Is huge In IMAX. It's emotional and gives you hope. It beats you off and doesn't stop. STAY Until the END CREDITS. — deo (@frickyuu) July 19, 2025 But the praise for the performances didn't stop there. Someone else noted the chemistry between the characters was 'out of this world,' adding: 'The powers alone make for some great visuals, but the space sequences are quite breathtaking. If these are their first steps, I'm excited to see what steps they take next.' Another wrote: '#TheFantasticFour is SIMPLY FANTASTIC! Marvel's first family shines with chemistry & charisma Stan Lee would be proud of. Visually incredible, the FF dazzle from start to finish. Ben Grimm brings the heart. Silver Surfer is perfection. Matt Shakman delivers one of Marvel's best.' 'Nothing will prepare you for #TheFantasticFour First Steps. Pedro Pascal is the perfect Reed, but the entire cast shines and does right by these characters. It's funny, moving, gorgeous to look at, and non-stop FANTASTIC. This is @MarvelStudios at its brilliant best.' The Fantastic Four: First Steps will be released in theaters on July 25.

Nigella Lawson's Blueberry Polenta Upside-Down Cake
Hello, thank you for coming to my dessert dissertation defense. Let's begin: The best cakes are upside down. There are several reasons for this. Upside-down cakes highlight fruit, whether fleetingly seasonal or, in the case of canned pineapple, pleasingly and perfectly circular. They're easy to make and don't call for much equipment beyond a mixing bowl and a cake tin. Because they don't have any frosting, upside-down cakes are usually not too sweet. And they look stunning, with the fruit forming a mosaic on top of the cake, which, when you cut into it, has a beautiful ombré effect from top to bottom. Nigella Lawson's blueberry polenta upside-down cake is a perfect example of the form. It's simple to pull together; just tumble blueberries over sugar in your greased cake pan, pour over your batter (no mixer or butter softening required) and bake. The polenta adds a subtle crunch to the tender cake, and the blueberries form a juicy, inky indigo topper. Serve with vanilla ice cream or nothing at all. Again, upside-down cakes like this are perfect as they are. Featured Recipe View Recipe → Shrimp fra diavolo: Oh, another entry for the spicy tomato seafood rotation! Plump, sweet shrimp, diced Calabrian chile and lots of garlic punch up your go-to tomato paste and purée in this Anna Francese Gass recipe. It's just the sort of satisfying but speedy dinner to cap off a busy summer weekend. Vegan potato salad with tahini: I came across this Melissa Clark recipe while clicking around New York Times Cooking and made a mental note to save it. It sounds so delicious — tender yellow potatoes tossed in a flavorful dressing of charred scallions, cumin, lemon, garlic and lots of tahini. So I'll save it here, in this newsletter, in case you would also like to make it. Chicken tenders: These, with a crisp slaw and a carbonated beverage, would be a fantastic dinner for anyone of any age. Go ahead and double this Millie Peartree recipe — which has you pan-fry, rather than deep-fry, your chicken strips — so that you have leftovers for salads, rice bowls and wraps throughout the week. I'm not much of a camper. It's not that I don't love the outdoors — it's more that I've hit that age where if I don't sleep with my pillows in a very particular arrangement, I'll feel it in my upper back for the next five days. But this new video of Ali Slagle answering your campground-cooking questions has me looking at tent recommendations. I want cheesy chili beans cooked over a campfire! Pour-over coffee and morning birdsong! Read more and watch the video by clicking here or the image below: Thanks for reading!
