Ohtani homers in 5th straight game, Freeman drives in 2 runs in the 9th as Dodgers beat Twins 4-3
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Shohei Ohtani matched a franchise record with a homer in the fifth straight game and Freddie Freeman drove in two runs with a two-out single in the ninth inning as the Los Angeles Dodgers rallied to beat the Minnesota Twins 4-3 on Wednesday. Freeman hit a sinking liner to left field that eluded a diving Harrison Bader and scored Mookie Betts and Ohtani, setting off a wild celebration. Ohtani hit a solo homer to center in the first, his National League-leading 37th of the season. It marked the seventh time in Dodgers history that a player has homered in five consecutive games. Ohtani joins Max Muncy, Joc Pederson, Adrian Gonzalez, Matt Kemp, Shawn Green and Roy Campanella in that club. The Twins scored two runs in the eighth off the Dodgers bullpen, one day after scoring seven runs off Los Angeles' pen in a 10-7 victory. This time, the Dodgers got the better of the Twins bullpen. Dodgers starter Tyler Glasnow was dominant, allowing three hits and one run with 12 strikeouts in seven innings. The right-hander was making his third start since returning from a shoulder injury. Minnesota's Chris Paddack had a strong outing, allowing four hits and one run in six innings with eight strikeouts. Royce Lewis, an native of Orange County, California, tied the game at 1 with a solo home run off Glasnow in the third inning. He added a double in the fifth and a walk in the two-run eighth, finishing 2 for 2. Tommy Edman lined a run-scoring, bases-loaded single to right field in the seventh to score Freeman, giving the Dodgers a 2-1 lead. Dodgers reliever Kirby Yates opened the eighth by walking the first three batters he faced. Alex Vesia entered and got Willi Castro to hit into a double play, scoring one run, and pinch-hitter Bader knocked in another run with an infield single. Key moment Minnesota's Griffin Jax got the first two outs in the ninth before Betts singled and Ohtani was walked intentionally. Jax walked Esteury Ruiz, loading the bases for Freeman. Key stat Glasnow struck out 12 batters for the first time since June 9, 2024, when he fanned 12 against the Yankees. Up next Twins RHP Zebby Matthews (1-2, 6.26 ERA) makes his sixth start against when Minnesota hosts Washington on Friday. Dodgers RHP Emmet Sheehan (101, 4.41 ERA) will face the Red Sox in Boston on Friday. ___ AP MLB:

Lindor and Alonso snap out of slumps, power Mets to series sweep of Angels
NEW YORK (AP) — Slump-busting hits by Francisco Lindor and Pete Alonso were just what the New York Mets needed to finish a three-game sweep of the Los Angeles Angels. Lindor snapped a career-worst 0-for-31 drought and Alonso ended a 2-for-34 slide as the Mets beat the Angels 6-3 on Wednesday. New York won its fourth straight after losing its first two games coming out of the All-Star break. Lindor gave the Mets the lead for good with a 76.6 mph RBI single in the third inning. The shortstop had made three outs on balls hit harder than 97 mph since Sunday, including a 98.2 mph fly to center in his first at-bat Wednesday. 'Funny how baseball works,' Lindor said. 'When you're good, you're good. When you suck, you suck.' Two batters after Lindor's looper, Alonso, whose slump dated to July 10, hit a 439-foot three-run homer — his 22nd longball of the season — to left field that was clocked at 112 mph off the bat. 'Felt awesome,' Alonso said. 'Those are kind of few and far between. Balls like that you kind of dream about — well, for me at least.' As relieved as they were to fuel the four-run third, Lindor and Alonso found further encouragement in the hits they collected later in the game. Lindor, whose batting average has slipped from .289 to .248 since June 7, produced the Mets' final run with another RBI single in the fourth. 'Past couple of games, felt like my at-bats got better,' Lindor said. 'I made the pitcher work a little bit more and there were more productive outs. And that, plus the combination of winning, is a good recipe.' Alonso singled to right in the seventh for his third multihit game of the month. 'Honestly, I'm more satisfied with that inside-out single my last at-bat,' Alonso said. 'The homer obviously is super great. But personally, when I'm hitting the ball to the big part of the field, that's when I feel good.' The Mets are 5-0 this season when Alonso and Lindor have multiple hits in a game and 13-0 in such games dating to last July. 'We're going to need those guys,' manager Carlos Mendoza said. 'We know that they're going through it, but they're too good, man. They're too good of a hitter and too good of a player and I'm glad they were able to come through for us today.' ___ AP MLB:

Sandy Alcantara, Dylan Cease duel as trade candidates, one more obvious than the other
MIAMI — Two trade candidates took the mound Wednesday at LoanDepot Park, one more obvious than the other. Sandy Alcantara delivered the best outing of his turbulent season, strengthening the possibility he had made his final start for the Miami Marlins. Dylan Cease, meanwhile, continued his own uneven campaign, adding more uncertainty to his immediate future with the San Diego Padres. Advertisement The result — Marlins 3, Padres 2 — went down as a footnote next to Alcantara's line. For the first time this year, the 2022 National League Cy Young winner completed seven innings. For the second time since he returned from Tommy John surgery on Opening Day, he did not allow an earned run. When it was over, his ERA had dropped to 6.66. There is a little more than a week left until the July 31 trade deadline, and after months of concerning performance, Alcantara has re-emerged as a top candidate to pitch into October, with his latest opponent among the potential suitors: The Padres, league sources said, are among the many teams that have inquired about Alcantara. 'Everyone feels happy about the job that I did today,' Alcantara said, 'because they know I needed it so much.' He had finally gotten the results to go along with an intact arsenal. Alcantara's fastball averaged 97.2 mph, only slightly up from its season average. The right-hander generated nine groundouts and four strikeouts. He did not issue a walk, demonstrating the kind of command he wielded before his surgery. He permitted only an unearned run, avoiding the type of meltdown inning that had so often derailed him. 'We all know it's been talked about a lot with the struggles this year,' Marlins manager Clayton McCullough said. 'Sandy, what he's continued to do is the resilience he's shown … his competitiveness. And I think we enjoy and celebrate today, because that was a terrific outing.' Said Padres manager Mike Shildt: 'He looked like the Sandy Alcantara that is more of the Cy Young Sandy.' Marlins TV broadcast acknowledges the Sandy Alcantara trade rumors. Kyle Sielaff: "If this is it…Seriously, thank you for everything because he has been an amazing steward of this franchise." Tommy Hutton: "Tremendous person. Great representative of the Miami Marlins." — Fish On First (@FishOnFirst) July 23, 2025 Though Alcantara showed infrequent glimpses in the first half, teams throughout the league continued to monitor him in hope he would return to form. Sunday's breakthrough came against a Padres offense that scored six runs in four innings against Alcantara on May 28. 'There is a lot of people that they don't believe in myself,' Alcantara said. 'But if I believe, I don't care what they say. I just got to trust in God's process and just be out there, and it doesn't matter what they say. It doesn't matter what happens. Just be out there and fighting for my team.' Advertisement Alcantara's next start for Miami, if there is one, will come on the road against the St. Louis Cardinals, his first organization. The Marlins have played competitive baseball in recent weeks, but with a 48-53 record and the league's youngest roster, they remain at an early stage in their rebuild. 'I just feel great being here (with) this organization,' Alcantara said. 'What I know is, I got to go on the road with the team. So, if something happens, it just happens.' If something happens soon, Alcantara might not have to go far in a figurative sense. The Padres' greatest immediate need remains offense, but president of baseball operations A.J. Preller also is exploring the pitching market — both starters and relievers and, in particular, club-controlled pitching. Alcantara's contract includes a $17 million salary next season and, for 2027, a $21 million team option or a $2 million buyout. Marlins right-hander Edward Cabrera, who held the Padres to one run in another narrow win Tuesday, is a younger, pricier trade candidate. To take on any kind of significant financial commitment, San Diego might have to shed existing money. The Padres have entertained interest in Cease since last offseason, and people familiar with their thinking said Sunday the team has continued to listen on the pending free agent. Cease's value has faded in 2025. He was outdueled by Alcantara on Sunday, surrendering three runs (two earned) in five innings. Cease, the 2022 runner-up for the American League Cy Young award, has a disappointing 4.59 ERA through 21 starts. But the Scott Boras client is unlikely to re-sign with a San Diego club that is already carrying several nine-figure contracts. The Padres could recoup a post-fourth-round draft pick if they keep Cease through the deadline and extend a qualifying offer after the season. Or, in a potential trade, they could attempt to beat that value while addressing other needs. Advertisement Cease might not be attracting the interest surrounding the likes of Alcantara and Cabrera, but his fielding independent pitching number, 3.58, suggests he has suffered from some bad luck this season. There are still teams that dream on his ability, the Padres being one of them. 'It's surprising,' Shildt said of Cease's lack of results. 'But outside of one game early in Sacramento — and even that game … it wasn't like he was getting hit all over all the ballpark — he's given us a chance. The expectations are high for Dylan, but he's given us a chance to win.' (Photo of Dylan Cease: Carmen Mandato / Getty Images)
