NHAI GHG Emissions down in 2023-24 despite increase in highway construction

reduced its Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Emissions intensity to 0.8 MTCO2e/km from 1.0 MTCO2e/km despite a 20% increase in national highway construction in FY 2023-24, it said in its Sustainability Report 2023-24.
The comprehensive report details NHAI's robust framework for integrating environmental, social, and governance (ESG) principles into every aspect of its operations.
Highlighting NHAI's initiatives towards circular economy, the report said NHAI utilized over 631 lakh metric tonnes of recycled and reused materials, including fly-ash, plastic waste, and reclaimed asphalt, in national highway construction.
'In addition to this, NHAI continued to undertake nationwide tree plantation drives along the national highways,' it said.
In FY 2023-24, NHAI planted over 56 lakh saplings and in 2024-25 it planted 67.47 lakh saplings, bringing the total tree plantation to over 4.69 crore since the implementation of the Green Highways (Plantation, Transplantation, Beautification and Maintenance), Policy 2015.

'This initiative has helped to create substantial carbon sinks and enhance the positive environmental sustainability along the highways,' it added.
As per the report, NHAI has completed the development of 467 water bodies across the country under the
Amrit Sarovar Mission
. 'This initiative has not only rejuvenated local water sources but also provided nearly 2.4 crore cubic meters of soil for National Highway construction, resulting in estimated savings of approximately Rs 16,690 crore.
Further, the water use intensity of NHAI has reduced 74% in water stressed regions as compared to previous report.

As per the report, 100% of NHAI's direct employees and contract workers are covered under Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) management framework. NHAI also reported zero instances of workplace discrimination, reflecting its strong commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion, NHAI said in a statement issued on Tuesday.
Leveraging Technology
NHAI said it has implemented an AI-powered 'Data Lake 3.0' platform that has streamlined project management and helped resolve 155 conciliation claims, leading to an estimated savings of about Rs 25,680 crore.
Furthermore, the 98.5% penetration of FASTag has facilitated reducing congestion and vehicular emissions at toll plazas besides reducing carbon footprint.

3 deputy collector-rank officials to interact with traders, residents to get consent for Pandharpur temple corridor plan
Kolhapur: The Solapur district administration has appointed three deputy collector-rank officials, following chief minister Devendra Fadnavis 's instructions, to negotiate with traders and residents concerned about their livelihoods over the Pandharpur temple corridor development plan. The details of the plan have been made public, with total expenses estimated at Rs 2,000 crore. Designed similarly to the Kashi temple corridor plan, it includes widening of roads, developing lodges and parking facilities for devotees, and ensuring the town is prepared to tackle any disaster. AU Bank profit rises 16% to 581 cr in Apr-June qtr
Jaipur: AU Small Finance Bank posted a 16% growth in net profit to Rs 581 crore during the first quarter of this financial year. The Jaipur-based bank had earned a net profit of Rs 503 crore in the same quarter of the previous fiscal year. Interest earned by the bank improved to Rs 4,378 crore compared to Rs 3,769 crore in the June quarter of FY25. Net interest income rose to Rs 2,045 crore during the quarter against Rs 1,921 crore a year ago. The bank's operating profit also increased to Rs 1,312 crore from Rs 952 crore in the year-ago period. Gross loan portfolio (GLP) grew 18% to Rs 1,17,624 crore compared to Rs 99,792 crore as of Q1 FY25, it said. Similarly, net NPAs, or bad loans, increased to 0.88% against 0.63% in the year-ago period. As a result, provisions and contingencies almost doubled to Rs 533 crore during the first quarter compared to Rs 283 crore a year ago. Provision Coverage Ratio (PCR) stood at 83% at the end of June 2025. However, the capital adequacy ratio of the bank declined to 19.42 per cent from 20.11 per cent in the same quarter of FY25.
