AOL ditching dial-up service, a relic of the internet in the '90s and early '00s
In the hazy impressions of memory, some may even recall it fondly: The AOL dial-up internet service that those of a certain age associate with the World Wide Web is coming to a close. The company, also known by its "You've got mail" greeting and the CD trial discs — so many CDs — made the announcement on its website. "AOL routinely evaluates its products and services and has decided to discontinue Dial-up Internet. This service will no longer be available in AOL plans," the web provider said. Absent the wireless signals of the modern day, dial-up connected to the internet using a conventional telephone line, emitting a distinctive, high-pitched chirping sound in the process. AOL, now part of Yahoo, said the dial-up service, along with the AOL Dialer software and AOL Shield browser, will be discontinued on Sept. 30. America Online was famous for its free trial discs, which seemed to be everywhere in the 1990s when the internet was gaining steam in households across the United States and beyond. It changed its name to just AOL in 2006. Verizon sold AOL and Yahoo to private equity firm Apollo Global Management for $5 billion in 2021.

AOL Will Shut Its Dial-Up Internet Service (Yes, It's Still Operating)
AOL announced that it will discontinue its dial-up internet service next month, marking the end of a 34-year offering that is synonymous with the early days of the internet. The service, and its associated software, will be discontinued on Sept. 30, the company said. A statement on AOL's website on Friday said: 'AOL routinely evaluates its products and services and has decided to discontinue Dial-up internet.' AOL, which is owned by Yahoo, did not release information about how many people still use its dial-up service. The service started in 1991, as home computers were becoming popular. AOL's dial-up tone, sometimes followed by the 'You've got mail!' announcement, became the soundtrack for many Americans as they were learning how to navigate the internet. In 2019, according to the U.S. census, an estimated 265,000 people in the United States were using only dial-up internet. That was about two percent of the number of people surveyed on their household internet subscriptions.

21 Target Products For A Bed Refresh
A sleek bed frame with storage so you can finally banish the "under-bed abyss" vibe. Shoes, cardigans, ugly Christmas sweaters that only come out for that party once a year — all neatly hidden from sight. Promising review: "This bed was very easy to put together. Directions were well written. We have had several compliments on how it looks." —Hermanson HousePrice: $200.99+ (originally $373.99+, available in sizes full–queen) A classic six-piece sheet set that says, "I didn't overthink it, I just nailed it." Soft, simple, and way more put-together than your laundry situation. Set includes one fitted sheet, one flat sheet, and four pillowcases. Twin and Twin XL sets only include two review: "These sheets are nice and big! The fitted sheet has deep pockets so I don't think they'll be coming off a corner unless I take it off. The flat sheet is incredibly long so it won't be popping out the bottom of my bed like my previous sheets. In addition to their great size, they are very soft feeling." —krissyPrice: $29.07+ (originally $45.99+; available in sizes twin–California king and 19 colors) A unique velvet accent pillow so chic it might just trick your friends into thinking you hired a designer. It's bold, it's plush, and it knows it's not just here to accessorize — it's here to steal the show. Promising review: "Love this pillow. It is large, about the width of a king pillow case. It's my favorite throw pillow for my bed and frankly the entire house. I bought this on a whim and am so happy I have. Love this!" —Target ShopperPrice: $40 (available in two colors) A 100% French linen duvet cover that's so cozy it should honestly come with a warning label. One snuggle session and you'll be canceling plans with the confidence of someone who values sleep above all else. Also available as a set with two matching review: "By far my favorite duvet cover! This is very high quality linen and not rough feeling at all. I've had it for almost a year now and it does not look worn even with regular washing in hot water and tumble dry. It has a nice weight to it and great for all seasons because linen is a temperature regulating material." —TargetGirlPrice: $173.59+ (available in sizes twin–California king and 16 colors/patterns) A tufted headboard that'll instantly take your bed from "mattress in a corner" to "intentional, cozy sanctuary." It's chic, cushy, and makes sitting up to binge, scroll, or sip tea feel way more elevated (literally and aesthetically). Promising review: "I absolutely love this plush and sophisticated tufted headboard. It upgrades any queen-size bed with style. It's easy to assemble. Just attach the legs. Delivery was quick. I definitely recommend this beautiful headboard!" —SuzettePrice: $129.99 A color-changing clock that gently lulls you to sleep and wakes you up like a sweet angel, not a screaming banshee. Because you deserve to be eased into your day, not jolted out of a dream like you're being chased. Promising review: "I use this as my alarm clock. The light feature that turns on 15 minutes prior to my set alarm time is wonderful! It slowly gets brighter and I am always awake before the alarm sounds. It's nice to not wake up the whole house. The night light feature options are very pretty and nice to have just before going to sleep." —JBPrice: $30 A memory foam down alternative pillow because it fluffs like a dream and supports like a loyal friend. Toss your flat, sad excuse of a pillow and start sleeping like the royalty you clearly are. Promising review: "I chose this over another $140 pillow… and it's probably the best pillow I've ever tried. I'm a side sleeper and this provided enough support so that my head doesn't sink in too much, but is also soft and cushiony enough so my head/neck isn't forced up as I sleep. It softly cradles whatever position my neck/head ends up in. Highly recommend this pillow, it has helped my sleep so much!" —HappyholidaysPrice: $40 (available in two sizes) A herringbone weave basket to help you stop pretending your chair is a storage unit. Toss in throw pillows, spare blankets, or that one hoodie you wear every night — and somehow your mess becomes stylish. Promising reviews: "I've been looking for a basket to store 2 of my thick throws and this basket was perfect." —Anonymous"Massive basket! It holds so much. I love the handles also. Great value! High quality." —JloveleePrice: $30+ (available in two sizes) A sleek velvet comforter turns your bed into a velvet-draped cloud of luxury. It's soft, it's dramatic, and yes, it's machine washable, because we're fancy but practical. Set includes a comforter and two review: "I honestly wish they had more colors of this! I have the pink/mauve color, which is definitely a cool-toned pink, almost lavender color. It's gorgeous but doesn't really match the colors I'm wanting to have in my bedroom, but I love the comforter so much I might make it work. I've been using this comforter for two years now, washed it several times, and it's still like new. My cat has even gotten sick on it and it cleaned perfectly. It keeps me warm but not hot and is fluffy enough and large enough to cover my bed. I love how soft this is and might have to get another as a backup in case they stop making them." —JennakPrice: $69+ (available in sizes full–king and three colors) A simple but super useful nightstand with enough storage to handle your nightly chaos: half-read books, rogue chargers, lip balm graveyard, all of it. And yes, it still looks clean and cute. Promising review: "I've been looking for a nightstand to replace my old one for a while now, and this fit the bill perfectly! For reference, I assembled this on my own, and it took me a little over an hour from opening the box to moving it to my bedside. It has way more storage than I could ever need — seriously, between the three drawers and top, I feel like I'm totally set. It looks great next to my bed as well, and is such an upgrade from my old nightstand! If you're on the fence, go for it. This nightstand brings me a lot of joy!" —LeahPrice: $200 (originally $221) A wall sconce light that looks expensive, but plugs in like a budget pick. Add instant ambience without committing to drywall damage you'll regret later. Promising review: "Elegant and affordable sconces, whether you want to hard wire or use the built-in cord. We had the same issue as other reviewers with the base not sitting flush against the wall; it's the green ground screw in the mounting bracket! Simply back it out a little more and it will not stick out as much, making the base nice and stable." —ReviewPrice: $79.99 A silk pillowcase to keep your skin smooth, your hair less messy, and your vibe pure elegance. Sleeping on anything else suddenly feels like a personal betrayal. Promising review: "I've had this pillowcase for a year now and decided a review is due. This pillowcase would have to be one of my most successful purchases. The price was steep for a pillowcase but I needed to try something for my hair loss and frizz. I was worried it would pill but it is still just as silky after one year. My hair no longer sheds or falls out all over my bed or in the shower. It's made such a difference. Highly recommend." —DnznsjPrice: $30 (available in two sizes and in gray) A weighted microfiber blanket that's basically a full-body hug. It holds you just right, calms the chaos in your brain, and might even trick you into sleeping like a responsible adult. This blanket utilizes Deep Touch Pressure Therapy (DTP) through gentle, even pressure across your review: "I love this blanket, it's bigger than my previous! It's super soft and I don't overheat like other ones. Did I mention how soft it is?" —Target reviewerPrice: $69.99+ (originally $97.99+; available in three weights and 16 colors) A set of string lights with ivy vines screams cozy without trying too hard. Plug them in, select one of eight light modes with the remote, and let the ✨main character energy✨ wash over you. Promising review: "This string of lights is an excellent and affordable way you can add a splash of nature to any room without the fuss of actually having to take care of a plant. I have mine displayed on my windows, and I receive so many compliments. It makes me happy and it brings a smile to my neighbors' faces as well." —KimPrice: $15 A tufted bench that sits pretty at the end of your bed while hiding all the stuff you don't want to look at. Chic, sneaky, and surprisingly useful — just like you. Promising review: "Perfect addition to our bedroom! Classy navy blue. Sturdy for sitting while putting on shoes and hinge/top feels well-made. Fabric is soft. Good amount of storage inside, which we are using for sheets /books/misc. and love it!" —SPPrice: $220 (available in three colors) A fun and practical laptop desk with adjustable legs, a tiny drawer, and ventilation holes so your laptop stays cool while you binge Bridgerton for the third time. Who needs a home office when your bed can do both jobs? Price: $37.99+ (originally $94.99+; available in two colors) A projector with a built-in speaker turns your ceiling into a personal movie screen. Ideal for watching TikToks, binging your comfort show, or falling asleep to ambient YouTube vibes. Promising review: "I was looking for an inexpensive yet good projector! If you are reading my review, I will say don't hesitate. This was a fantastic purchase. I have used this to watch TV and for movie nights with the family!" —Family nightPrice: $79.99 (originally $129.99) A fleece blanket so soft, you'll start canceling plans just to hang out with it. It's like a warm, fluffy excuse to never leave your bed again (and honestly, we admire that). Promising review: "Absolutely love this blanket! If I could give it more than 5 stars, I would. First bought for our guest bedroom and received so many compliments I bought one for every bedroom in the house. So very comfortable and not too thick or too thin." —KikiPrice: $20 (available in two sizes and in gray) A comforter set made with a satin-y TENCEL™ fabric so silky-smooth it'll have you wondering if you're sleeping on a luxury yacht. Whether you're a hot sleeper, cold sleeper, or just a picky sleeper, this one's here to keep the peace. Set includes a comforter and two pillow review: "This is a great comforter. My husband and I are hot sleepers and usually cannot use a comforter. We bought this one hoping the fabric would be cooler. This is the first comforter we have ever used that doesn't make us hot or sweat and still keeps us warm. Very happy with it. The look and quality are nice, fits our king bed good." —NicolePrice: $99+ (available in sizes full–king and eight colors) A fleece bed rest pillow turns your bed into a throne and your posture into something vaguely ergonomic. Whether you're working, reading, or doom-scrolling, you'll never want to sit upright without it again. Promising review: "Omg can I say how comfy and supportive this pillow is?? Ive always had trouble sitting down properly in bed to read. Always had back pains as well as elbow pain from reading. This has been such a game changer! So comfy and soft! The material is great quality. I love it!" —Glitz95Price: $20 (also available in gray) A bedside lamp with marble base that's giving "chic hotel suite," but your wallet doesn't even flinch.
