Fans Can't Stop Laughing At Wasim Akram's New Statue In Hyderabad: 'I Fainted'
Last Updated:
Wasim Akram's life-sized statue in Hyderabad left fans laughing and sparked some hilarious memes due to its inaccurate facial depiction.
Fast-bowling great Wasim Akram was honored by a life-sized statue in Hyderabad, Pakistan, but it had the opposite effect to what was intended — leaving fans laughing and feeling sorry for the cricketer on social media. The statute, reportedly unveiled in April, got popular overnight after a meme page on X (formerly Twitter) shared a photo of it, inviting thousands of impressions and hilarious one-liners.
The life-size statue outside the Niaz Stadium had Akram in Pakistan's jersey from the 1999 World Cup. It showed him in his bowling stride, loading the famous slingy action. Although the maker did a good job in getting the dimensions and his body structure right, his face looked quite different, with his frown of effort seeming like one of sadness. His hair also made the former captain look quite old.

The reaction is not too different from the time when the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai unveiled the statue of the legendary Sachin Tendulkar, who fans felt resembled Australia's Steve Smith more.
Akram represented Pakistan in international cricket from 1984 to 2003, participating in 104 Test matches and 356 One Day Internationals (ODIs). In Tests, he took 414 wickets at an average of 23.62, and in ODIs, he claimed 502 wickets at an average of 23.52, becoming the first bowler to achieve 500 ODI wickets.
Skilled with the bat as well, he scored over 6,000 runs across formats, with his highest Test score being 257 not out. Akram was a member of Pakistan's 1992 World Cup-winning team and competed in four World Cups overall. Additionally, he captained Pakistan in 25 Tests and 109 ODIs.
Having worked as a coach in the IPL, for domestic sides, and briefly for the men's national Pakistani team, too, he currently does commentary and broadcast stints around the world.

U.S host cities brace for uncertainty ahead of 2026 FIFA World Cup
Philadelphia's host city executive for the 2026 World Cup says organizers accept that an immigration crackdown by President Donald Trump's administration may be among the outside events that impact next year's tournament. "There are certainly things that are happening at the national level, the international level, there are going to be geopolitical issues that we don't even know right now that are going affect the tournament next year, so we recognize that we're planning within uncertainty, Meg Kane said Monday at a gathering of the 11 U.S. host city leaders, one year and two days ahead of the tournament opener. The World Cup will be played at 16 stadiums in the U.S., Mexico and Canada from June 11 to July 19 next year, a tournament expanded to 48 nations and 104 games. All matches from the quarterfinals on will be in the U.S., with the final at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey. Whether it's the Olympics, whether it's a World Cup, whether it's a Super Bowl, you name it, anytime you've got a major international sporting event, geopolitics is going to have a role, said Alex Vasry, CEO of the New York/New Jersey host committee. Kane said the host committees must adapt to decisions made by others. One of the things that I think we all recognize is that we have to be really good at operating within that uncertainty, Kane said. I think for each of our cities, we want to be prepared to make any person that is coming and makes the decision to come to the United States or come to this World Cup feel that they are welcome. We do not play a role necessarily in what is happening in terms of the decisions that are made. Trump's travel ban on citizens from 12 countries exempted athletes, coaches, staff and relatives while not mentioning fans. We allow for FIFA to continue having constructive conversations with the administrations around visas, around workforce, around tourism, Kane said. FIFA is running the World Cup for the first time without a local organizing committee in the host nation. Asked in late April whether FIFA president Gianni Infantino was available to discuss the tournament, FIFA director of media relations Bryan Swanson forwarded the request to a member of the media relations staff, who did not make Infantino available. Legislation approved by the House of Representatives and awaiting action in the Senate would appropriate $625 million to the Federal Emergency Management Agency for security, planning, and other costs related to the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The 11 U.S. host committees have been consulting with each other on issues such as transportation for teams and VIPs, and for arranging fan fests. At the last major soccer tournament in the U.S., the 2024 Copa America final at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, Florida, started 82 minutes late after fans breached security gates. Certainly we were not involved in the planning or the logistics for that particular match, said Alina Hudak, CEO of the Miami World Cup host committee. She said local police have done an extensive review of the after-action reports related to that in collaboration with the stadium and so all of the things that happened are in fact being reviewed and addressed and I can assure you that everything is being done within our power to make sure that the appropriate measures are being placed, the appropriate perimeters.

WTC Final: Labuschagne to open, Green & Hazlewood named in Australia's playing XI
London: Australia have revealed their playing XI on the eve of the World Test Championship (WTC) final against South Africa, scheduled to be played from Wednesday at Lord's. Skipper Pat Cummins has picked Marnus Labuschagne to open the innings alongside Usman Khawaja, hoping the 30-year-old can be a long-term solution to the spot that has seen quite a few batters to replace David Warner. Labuschagne, who has never opened in Test cricket, has just one Test century to his name since the end of 2022 and failed to make an impression in two matches for County side Glamorgan earlier this month. After much debate, seamer Josh Hazlewood won the race against Scott Boland to partner left-armer Mitchell Starc and Cummins in the pace attack. Hazlewood hasn't played a red-ball contest since he featured in the third Test against India in December, with Boland edging his way into Australia's line-up for the remainder of that series and impressing with a 10-wicket match haul in the series finale in Sydney. Meanwhile, Hazlewood won the IPL with Royal Challengers Bengaluru last week and only arrived in London on the night of June 4. All-rounder Beau Webster also found a place in the playing XI alongside Cameron Green, who will be playing his first Test since October 2024. Green had suffered a stress fracture in his back and chose to undergo surgery in October. Now playing as a specialist batter, Green is entering the upcoming WTC final on the back of three centuries during his County stint with Gloucestershire. Australia Playing XI: Usman Khawaja, Marnus Labuschagne, Cameron Green, Steve Smith, Travis Head, Beau Webster, Alex Carey (wk), Pat Cummins (c), Mitchell Starc, Nathan Lyon, Josh Hazlewood.
