The rise & fall of Buxar's feared criminal
2
Buxar: Murder convict Chandan Mishra, who was shot dead inside the ICU of Paras HMRI in Patna on Thursday, had built a fearsome reputation over two decades through his involvement in murder, extortion and kidnapping.
A native of Sonvarsha village under the Industrial police station area in Buxar, Chandan was the son of Shrikant Mishra, also known locally as Mantu Mishra.
Mishra's notoriety arose not only from the scale of his crimes but also from his audacity. Police officers said he was known to openly announce his intentions before acting. In one such instance in 2011, he allegedly told lime trader Rajendra Kesari, "I will kill you tomorrow," after the businessman refused to pay extortion money.
Kesari was shot dead the following day. Mishra was later convicted for the murder and sentenced to life imprisonment.
During his most active years, Mishra formed an alliance with Omkarnath Singh alias Sheru Singh, a resident of Dullahpur, Balihar village. Together, they led the Chandan-Sheru gang, which became a dominant force in organised crime across western Bihar. The gang's activities drew sustained police attention and bounties of Rs 50,000 were announced for both Chandan and Sheru.

However, internal divisions over finances and leadership caused a rift. Sheru eventually broke away and established his own gang, which later became known for its involvement in high-profile crimes, including the Ara Tanishq jewellery heist.
Mishra remained a key figure in Buxar's criminal network despite serving time in several jails, including Buxar, Bhagalpur and later Beur Central Jail in Patna. Police records list over two dozen cases against him under various serious charges, including those under the Arms Act.

Two members of Irani gang, who were plotting robberies in Delhi-NCR, held after shootout : Cops
Following a brief exchange of fire, two alleged members of the Irani Gang — Murtaza Ali and Siraj Ali — were nabbed on Saturday, said police. Known for their alleged involvement in a series of violent crimes across multiple states, the two accused sustained bullet injuries on their left legs during the encounter, officers said, adding that they are currently undergoing treatment at Safdarjung Hospital. According to the police, the operation was launched based on a tip-off received at Hazrat Nizamuddin police station regarding the movement of armed criminals allegedly planning to commit robberies in the South-East district. The two men were expected to pass through the area opposite Indraprastha Park near the Meerut Expressway T-point, prompting the police team to strategically position themselves and intercept the suspects around 12:30 am on Saturday. 'When confronted and instructed to surrender, both suspects immediately opened fire, discharging four rounds at the police team, with one round striking the bulletproof jacket of Constable Rajender. In a decisive act of self-defense and retaliation, the police fired three rounds, injuring both accused in their left legs. The injured suspects were promptly transported to Safdarjung Hospital for medical treatment,' said Additional DCP (South East), Aishwarya Sharma. A total of seven rounds were exchanged, and seven empty shells were recovered from the scene, said police. Crime and forensic teams conducted a thorough on-site inspection, and a case was registered at the Sunlight Colony police station. During questioning, both men allegedly admitted that they had traveled to Delhi with the intent of committing a series of robberies in collaboration with other gang members in Delhi-NCR. Efforts are ongoing to locate and apprehend the remaining members of the Irani gang, said police. According to the police, Murtaza Ali, 38, a resident of Bhopal, has a long criminal history with 46 cases of robbery, dacoity, and theft registered against him in Madhya Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, and Karnataka. He was released from jail about a year ago. Siraj Ali, 40, also from Bhopal, was previously involved in a case under the Arms Act. He was working as a street vendor selling belts and perfumes.

Karmali was working as a security guard with a private company in the country when he was killed in a brutal terrorist assault in the Dosso region on July 15. His mortal remains are yet to be brought back to India, and the grieving family is enduring an agonising wait that may stretch over a week. Fighting back her tears, Ganesh's elder daughter Sapna Kumari, appealed to the Centre to intervene and ensure that the company her father worked for compensates their family adequately. "My father was not ill, nor did he die in an accident. He was murdered by terrorists. The the external affairs minister, must ensure justice. My father was the sole breadwinner of our family. We are devastated," she said. Recalling the painful memories, Sapna also said her father had promised to attend her wedding on July 2, but the company denied him leave. "If he had returned for the ceremony, he might still be alive. It was very painful for any girl to get married without her father's presence," she said, finally wiping off a tear.. Sapna was en route to Bangalore with her husband when she received the devastating news. "I got the call on the train. I de-boarded midway in Odisha and returned home. My younger sister and brother are, too, small to even understand this loss. We just want to see him one last time," she said. Ganesh's wife, Yasoda Devi, is in a state of trauma. "My life has shattered. I have no idea how to raise my children alone. The company offered Rs 15 lakh, but how long will that last?" Bokaro labour superintendent Ranjit Kumar confirmed that the Indian embassy in Niger is working closely with the Jharkhand Migrant Cell to provide all help to the family of the deceased. "NOC has been issued by the Niger govt and the body is likely to arrive within a week," he added. The entire village of Karipani stands united in grief, mourning a man who left home seeking hope and returned only as a memory.
