CPI MP seeks NIA probe into Dharmasthala ‘crimes'

The Hindua day ago
Rajya Sabha member P. Sandosh Kumar of the Communist Party of India (CPI) on Saturday appealed to the Union Home Minister Amit Shah to order a probe by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) into the alleged burials of bodies which took place in Dharmasthala village in Karnataka over a decade ago.
In a letter to Mr. Shah, he said, '... Recent developments have brought to the fore a grim reality that cannot be ignored. What appeared over the years as isolated incidents now unmistakably point to a disturbing and systematic pattern of crimes — primarily targeting women, often silenced through coercion, and concealed with frightening impunity...'
The MP said that a series of 'unsolved crimes' over several decades, primarily targeting women, reveal chilling signs of systematic violence, concealment, and administrative silence in a town that is sacred to millions across India.
The letter cited a series of alleged crimes since 1979, especially involving young women, that remained uninvestigated and are part of 'a larger, deeply troubling pattern'.
'... In 1979, a schoolteacher named Vedavalli was burnt alive in her bathroom after legally winning a promotion that some influential forces allegedly opposed. In 1986, Padmalatha, a young pre-university student and daughter of a local Communist leader, was kidnapped and later found naked and lifeless in the Netravati river — seemingly punished for her father's political stand. In 2004, medical student Ananya Bhat went missing during a visit to Dharmasthala; her mother, a CBI employee who tried to investigate, was physically attacked and fell into a coma. No FIR was ever filed. In 2012, two siblings — Narayan and Yamuna — were brutally murdered in their home, just metres away from the KSRTC bus stand. They had reportedly resisted pressure to vacate their land. Their house was razed soon after and replaced by a commercial building. That same year, 17-year-old Sowjanya, a PU student, was abducted, raped, and murdered. A mentally ill man was quickly framed and jailed, only to be acquitted years later. Multiple witnesses died mysteriously during the course of the case...' the letter said.
'...These are not isolated aberrations. Taken together, they reveal signs of an organised criminal enterprise — one that has flourished under administrative silence,' wrote Mr. Kumar. He also flagged the alleged pattern of intimidation, harassment, and suppression faced by activists, RTI petitioners, journalists, and families who sought justice.
The MP said that despite widespread protests and appeals, the State government has failed to establish a credible Special Investigation Team (SIT), and the so-called 'acquittal review committee' was never properly constituted. The MP urged Mr. Shah to immediately transfer the matter to the NIA for a fair and credible investigation.
'Let me emphasise that this appeal is made in the firm belief that the spiritual sanctity of Dharmasthala must be protected — not just in ritual or appearance, but in truth, justice, and transparency,' the MP wrote. Stressing that a town revered by millions cannot remain clouded by fear, suspicion, and buried truths, he added.

AIADMK assails Congress, allies for bringing in caste dimension to Cabinet shuffle

AIADMK secretary A. Anbalagan said neither the Congress nor its allies had any right to rake up the replacement of the only Dalit Minister in the Puducherry NDA Cabinet when the Ministries of their past governments had no representation of marginalised communities. Addressing a press conference, Mr. Anbalagan condemned what he alleged were attempts of the Congress and its allies to drive a wedge between communities on the basis of caste for electoral gain. The AIADMK leader said though two Ministers, one from the BJP and the other from the AINRC, had been replaced for various reasons disconnected from their community background, the Congress was trying to create a controversy by injecting a caste dimension to these decisions taken by the leadership of the respective parties. He dismissed as an outright lie the Congress's claim that the Chief Minister Rangasamy-led AINRC-BJP coalition was the only government to not have Ministers from the Scheduled Castes community. Mr. Anbalagan proceeded to list list previous Congress Ministries, including the governments headed by the three-time Chief Minister M.O.H. Farook in 1985 or V. Vaithilingam later. Even the coalition government led by DMK Chief Minister R.V. Janakiraman (1996-99) did not have representation from these communities, he said. Both the Congress and the DMK are conveniently forgetting this history in their pretence of advocating for the Dalit communities, he added. Mr. Anbalagan said he would seek the party leadership's concurrence for petitioning the Election Commission of India to probe the declared election expenditure of the CPI(M) in Tamil Nadu to contest the 2024 general election. The CPM, which had received ₹10 crore donation from the DMK, has claimed that the money was used for electioneering in the two victorious Parliamentary constituencies. Even if that statement was taken at face value, the total expenditure could not have exceeded ₹1.80 core for the two constituencies. If given the go-ahead by former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami, Mr. Anbalagan said he would seek an ECI probe into the discrepency in stated expenditure that raised a cloud over the legitimacy of the electoral wins in the two seats. Mr. Anbalagan assailed the Communist parties for serving as mouthpieces of the DMK at the expense of their ideological core. He pointed to the glaring contradiction of the Communist parties being rivals in Kerala and allies elsewhere, and said that it exposed their ideological compromises. Mr. Anbalagan also called for an intensive crackdown on the rising drug trafficking menace in the Union Territory, especially the Karaikal region. According to the AIADMK leader, Karaikal was also turning a conduit for smuggling drugs by the sea route. He urged the Chief Minister and Home Minister to convene a high-level meeting of the police top brass to discuss pressing issues.

Indo-Israel training programme for farmers in Thally cancelled amid protest from CPI(M) and affiliate body

An Indo-Israel training programme for farmers, scheduled for Monday in Thally, has been cancelled. Communist Party of India (Marxist) Tamil Nadu secretary P. Shanmugam had waved the red flag over the programme, organised by the Horticulture Department, because of Israel's war in Gaza. Mr. Shanmugam said he had taken up the issue with the Chief Minister's Office. 'The event has now been cancelled.' When contacted, the project officer of the Indo-Israel Center of Excellence confirmed the development. However, he was not aware of the reason. Senior officials of the Horticulture Department were not reachable. Protest planned The CPI(M) district unit had planned a protest at the venue in Thally. The four-day programme, under the aegis of MASHAV — Israel's Agency for International Development Cooperation — was to be held at the Indo-Israel Centre of Excellence for Cut Flowers. The party's intervention came by after writer Aadhavan Deetchanya, general secretary of Tamil Nadu Progressive Writers and Artists Association, condemned the programme. Mr. Deetchanya told The Hindu, 'At a time when Israel's imperialist project decimated Gaza's soil and its children and the country was being isolated and condemned universally, Tamil Nadu's Horticulture Department organising the event amounted to sanitising Israel's crimes...' The Tamil Nadu Progressive Writers and Artists Association had also been at the forefront of the recent protests against Israel Film Festival that was to be organised by a film appreciation foundation. Transfer of technology The Indo-Israel Centres of Excellence have been established, under the Indo-Israel Agriculture Project, as part of cooperation through transfer of technology. In Thally, a Centre of Excellence was established for cut flowers in 2017.
