Marvel returns to form as ‘Fantastic Four' soars to $118 million at the box office
The movie hauled in $118 million in the U.S. and Canada and grossed $218 globally in its opening weekend. The film, which stars Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Ebon Moss-Bachrach and Joseph Quinn, is just the latest remake of the comic book property, though the first under Walt Disney Co.'s ownership.
Formerly owned by 21st Century Fox, 'The Fantastic Four' is one of several key intellectual properties now under the umbrella of the House of Mouse after its $71.3 billion acquisition of that studio's entertainment assets in 2019.
Disney has already capitalized on its ownership of the 'Deadpool' and 'X-Men' properties — its 2024 film, 'Deadpool & Wolverine,' garnered more than $1 billion in global box office revenue.
Fox produced and released three 'Fantastic Four' movies, none of which were well-received by audiences or critics. A 2015 reboot was particularly reviled.
Quality was not an issue this time. The movie notched a 88% approval rating on aggregator Rotten Tomatoes and an 'A-' grade from audience polling firm CinemaScore.
The movie exceeded pre-release estimates. 'First Steps' was expected to gross $100 million to $110 million in its debut weekend, on a reported budget of about $200 million.
The theatrical reception for 'The Fantastic Four' is a relief for Disney and Marvel, which has struggled in recent years to reap the box office earnings it once did with its superhero films.
The Anthony Mackie-led 'Captain America: Brave New World' received middling reviews from critics and brought in about $415 million in global box office revenue. Ensemble movie 'Thunderbolts*' received strong reviews, but made only $382 million worldwide.
Disney Chief Executive Bob Iger said earlier this year that the company 'lost a little focus' in its zeal to produce more shows and movies for the Disney+ streaming platform, acknowledging that 'quantity does not necessarily beget quality.'
'By consolidating a bit and having Marvel focus much more on their films, we believe it will result in better quality,' he said during an earnings call with analysts in May.
Anticipation was high for 'The Fantastic Four,' and Disney went all out with the marketing. The company hired a skywriter to craft encircled 4's in the sky near downtown Los Angeles on the day of the premiere and featured a drone show outside the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion after the showing.
'While Marvel films have settled into a fairly predictable core audience after multiple under-cooked films and streaming series in the post-'Avengers: Endgame' era, the brand remains sturdy when the right film comes along,' Shawn Robbins, director of movie analytics at Fandango and founder of site Box Office Theory, wrote in a weekend theatrical forecast published Wednesday.
Warner Bros.' DC Studios' 'Superman' came in second at the box office this weekend with a domestic total of $24.9 million for a worldwide gross so far of $503 million.

Guillermo del Toro's ‘Frankenstein' Looks Absolutely Stunning
When Guillermo del Toro finally got the chance to make his dream project, an adaptation of Mary Shelley's Frankenstein, you just knew it was going to be beautiful. Del Toro's films are known for a lot of things, and sumptuous production design and costumes are right near the top of the list. So, it almost goes without saying that a group of new images from the film are stunning, but these almost go beyond that. First revealed in an article by Vanity Fair and then released by Netflix, 10 new images from Frankenstein show characters, scenes, and interpretations that were previously kept secret. Here they are, all at once, and we can discuss a few of them in more detail below. Clearly, we could write tomes on the beauty of each of these images. The costumes, the sets, the locations. Each one is also framed in an interesting way that helps tell a story. But, we won't do that. What we will do, though, is fill in a few questions about who's who in these photos. Del Toro himself is just in that first image, along with Oscar Isaac as Dr. Victor Frankenstein. We see Victor in his lab in a later photo, too. The photo on the steps is of Victor as a child with his mother, and a little later, you see Victor again (played at a younger age by Christian Convery) with his father, played by Charles Dance. The photo of someone holding a photo is, indeed, Elordi's monster, who we see covered in a cloak further down. Mia Goth plays Elizabeth, Victor's soon-to-be sister-in-law, who both he and the monster become infatuated with. The second photo of Goth is with her fiancé, Victor's brother William Frankenstein, played by Felix Kammerer. That leaves the man in the top hat, an arms dealer played by Christoph Waltz, and that mysterious photo among the flowers. That's Sofia Galasso and David Bradley as a little girl and a blind man who are in the original book. What does it all mean? I've stayed at all of Disney World's priciest resorts — only one's worth it for its easy park access and great amenities
I visit Disney World at least twice a month. On about half of my trips, I stay at the most expensive resorts on the property, which Disney labels "deluxe." Deluxe resorts are often the closest to the theme parks and feature upgraded amenities and special restaurants. As they're above Disney's lower-cost value resorts and moderate options, they can get pricey. Starting rates at the deluxe resorts typically start at about $500 a night. I love all of the high-end places I've stayed at, but if I had to recommend just one on the entire Disney World property, it'd be the Riviera Resort. The resort brings a chic European style to the heart of Disney World From the outside, the grayish resort doesn't look like much. However, the interior is stunning and filled with custom artwork inspired by Disney's princesses and movies set in Europe, like "The Aristocats." I also love that the resort has two pools. One is a dedicated quiet pool with plush seating and shaded tables that's mainly for adults looking to relax. The other is more family-friendly with a slide and water features that are fun for kids. There's also plenty of upscale amenities on the property, like a beautiful gym and a rooftop bar overlooking the Disney Skyliner gondola system. Even better, the Skyliner can easily take guests to two of Disney's theme parks, Epcot and Hollywood Studios. Getting to the latter can sometimes take about 30 minutes (and requires a transfer), but the ride to Epcot is only about eight minutes. The resort has a broad range of accommodations, ranging from studios that sleep two to massive three-bedroom villas that sleep 12 and are complete with a formal dining room, full kitchen, and outdoor deck. My favorite is the resort's one-bedroom villa, which can sleep up to five people. It has a beautiful main bedroom that's attached to a marble-covered bathroom. The open living room and kitchen double as another sleeping space with two pull-down beds. The villa has a lot of storage, which I really love. It means I can unpack and spread out, but my space never looks cluttered throughout my stay. There are great dining options at Disney's Riviera Resort I often like to cook my own food to save money on Disney trips — it's cheaper than buying every meal at the parks or a hotel. However, the Riviera Resort has great dining options for a splurge meal. My favorite is Topolino's Terrace for Breakfast à la Art with Mickey & Friends. This character-dining experience is a delightful way to spend a morning. Mickey, Minnie, Donald, and Daisy make their way around the restaurant to take photos with guests as they munch on dishes like sour-cream waffles with roasted apples and French-toast bread pudding. Other dining options around the resort are Bar Riva, an excellent pool bar serving drinks and sizable lunch and dinner plates, and Primo Piatto, a quick-service restaurant dishing out everything from hot sandwiches and pizza to soups and salads. Plus, there's plenty to do on the property once the sun goes down During the day, I love spending time in the resort's pools. At night, I always find lots to do around the property. The resort hosts nightly movies on its lawn, where you can catch an animated Disney classic. I also love the free marshmallow roasts that happen each evening around a fire. When it's time for the Epcot fireworks, I head up to Topolino's Terrace for incredible viewing on the outdoor patio. About 30 minutes before the show begins, I like to grab a drink from the bar that I can enjoy outside— its old-fashioneds are incredible. This is the resort I always recommend to friends When friends ask me where to stay at Disney World, the Riviera Resort is always my first suggestion if they have extra room in their vacation budgets. Though a stay can be pricey, I still think the resort is a good pick for its easy access to two theme parks, ample dining options, exceptional amenities, and large rooms for bigger families. I've stayed here a handful of times and always enjoy my vacation. Even if the resort isn't in your budget, you should still try to get to Topolino's Terrace for breakfast.

So while "Superman" may have defeated "Man of Steel" domestically, Forbes argues that it's unlikely James Gunn's film is going overtake Zack Snyder's overall box office once the current theatrical run ends. As far as why "Superman" is having a much weaker time overseas than its 2013 counterpart, Gunn has offered a couple of possible reasons. He's argued that Superman isn't as much of a "known commodity" across the globe, though that begs the question of why "Man of Steel" did so well.
