Meet the 5 amateurs playing in the 2025 Masters at Augusta National
It's a good week to be an amateur at the 2025 Masters.
Every amateur is making their first start at Augusta National Golf Club this year and will battle it out for the low amateur title. If they made the 36-hole cut, they will have the chance to win the Silver Cup and be honored alongside the Masters winner. There is no low amateur awarded if none make the weekend.
An amateur has never won the Masters, though the Masters has plenty of history involving ams, including the famed Crow's Nest, the living space on the third floor of the Augusta National clubhouse, and the Monday night Amateur Dinner.
Here's a look at the five amateurs competing in the 89th Masters Tournament.
Josele Ballester
Ballester became the first Spaniard to win the U.S. Amateur, winning 1 up at Hazeltine National last August. The senior at Arizona State has been one of college golf's best players this year. He's also from the same hometown as 2025 ANWA winner Carla Bernat Escuder.
Evan Beck
Beck made it to the championship match of the U.S. Mid-Amateur for the second straight year, but this time, he had a dominating 9-and-8 win over Bobby Massa to win the championship and earn his spot in the Masters. He has a good chance of making the Walker Cup team later this year, too.
Justin Hastings
Hastings survived a 36-hole marathon to win the Latin America Amateur Championship, the second player from the Cayman Islands to win the event in the past four years. Hastings, a senior at San Diego State, is challenging numerous career school records held by Xander Schauffele.
Noah Kent
Kent, who became a fan favorite during the 2024 U.S. Amateur at Hazeltine, transferred to Florida over the winter and will begin play with the Gators this fall. He has played each of the last two weeks at the Texas Children's Houston Open and the Terra Cotta Invitational, but he has the most "rust" of the amateurs coming in.
Hiroshi Tai
Tai waited almost 11 months to get to Augusta National. He earned his spot in the Masters last May when he won the NCAA individual title at Omni La Costa. He's set to become the first Singaporean to play in the Masters.

How many Masters flags has Rory McIlroy signed? He dishes on perks of being Masters champ
ATLANTA – Rory McIlroy was hanging out under the veranda at East Lake Golf Club on Tuesday afternoon with his manager and another associate. Tucked under his right armpit, he held roughly two dozen yellow pin flags with the famed Masters logo. An hour later, during his press conference ahead of the 2025 Tour Championship, the image of McIlroy with a stack of flags begged the question: How many flags has he signed since he won the Masters in April? 'A lot,' he said smiling. 'Actually, I have no idea. It's been a lot. But I do know that they had 1,100 extra — like 1,100 left in the merchandise facility at the end of the week, and we took all 1,100. But it's been a lot. But I'll never get sick of signing them. I've waited 17 years to sign that flag in the middle, and I will never complain about doing it.' McIlroy said he's already planned a couple of trips with some friends to go to Augusta National as well as one with his father. 'It'll probably be a little emotional,' he said. 'I think that'll be a cool moment to be with him.' McIlroy noted that he still gets emotional just thinking about it. He's made friends with members over the years and to be able to return and enjoy the course again will be special. 'Sort of reminisce over the good and the bad that happened over the course of the week, yeah, that'll be really cool,' he said. 'I've always said some of my favorite times at Augusta were when it wasn't the Masters Tournament, but it'll be lovely to next time go there and go up to the champions locker room and put on my green jacket and feel like I belong.' Speaking of the Green Jacket, McIlroy said he didn't take it off on the night of his victory until he went to bed around 3:30 a.m. He only slept about three hours and when he woke up he had a moment where he questioned did he really win the Masters and complete the career Grand Slam? 'You wake up and you see the green jacket lying over a chair in the bedroom and you think, yeah, that did happen yesterday,' he said. He added that he has been reluctant to wear it. 'I'm reluctant to wear it. It's not as if I wear it a lot. I have it hanging in my wardrobe in a place where I can see it every day, but I don't know, I always thought if I had one — if I did win the Masters one day, I'd never have the thing off, and it hasn't been that way,' he explained. 'I haven't worn it as much as I thought I would.' He's got another seven months with it in his possession and, of course, a lifetime to sign the famed Masters flag.

Rory McIlroy loves signing Masters flags more than wearing the green jacket
ATLANTA (AP) — Rory McIlroy didn't leave Augusta National as the Masters champion without one last purchase from the gift shop. He said there were 1,100 pin flags remaining in the Masters Shop. 'And we took all 1,100,' McIlroy said Tuesday ahead of the Tour Championship, the end of a PGA Tour season that has been his most memorable to date all because of one Sunday in April. 'It's been a lot,' he said of the flags he has signed. 'But I'll never get sick of signing them. I've waited 17 years to sign that flag in the middle, and I will never complain about doing it.' Players sign flags all the time for fans, but the golf protocol is that only the Masters champion signs his name inside the outline of the U.S. that is part of golf's most famous logo. It has been just over four months since McIlroy delivered an exhilarating end to his 17-year pursuit of winning the green jacket, making birdie on the first playoff hole to beat Justin Rose and complete the career Grand Slam. He hasn't won since then and at times he has talked about finding motivation. But being the Masters champion doesn't get old. He already is planning some trips to Augusta National, a luxury afforded the champion, including one with his dad. If anything surprised him, it was the one-year ownership of the Masters green jacket. He hardly ever wears it. McIlroy said he wore it all night until he went to bed at about 3:30 a.m., and then awoke and went through sensations so many others have. He saw the jacket draped over a chair, a reminder that it all wasn't a dream. He wore it during a brief appearance at the Association of Golf Writers' dinner during the British Open. Otherwise, the occasions have been rare. 'I'm reluctant to wear it,' he said. 'It's not as if I wear it a lot. I have it hanging in my wardrobe in a place where I can see it every day. I always thought if I had one — if I did win the Masters one day — I'd never have the thing off, and it hasn't been that way. I haven't worn it as much as I thought I would.' McIlroy said he has trips planned with friends and some Augusta National members with whom he has become friends over the years. He would be required to wear his green jacket at the club, which most likely won't require anyone twisting his arm. 'I've always said some of my favorite times at Augusta were when it wasn't the Masters Tournament,' he said, referring to the times he went there before the Masters for practice rounds. 'But it'll be lovely to next time go there and go up to the champions locker room and put on my green jacket and feel like I belong.' ___ AP golf:
